I was walking Olga yesterday morning when I came across this truck being unloaded in front of our local Waitrose. Some people question why corporations feel the need to declare solidarity with Pride month, but I'll tell you it gave me a little boost seeing this message. I'm glad Waitrose is on my side and celebrating Pride with me!
Later I was deadheading roses when I found this little bush cricket hiding in one of the blossoms. I left these particular flowers alone. I couldn't deprive him of a home.
One of my errands for the weekend was to follow up on my fox print from Mitchell's cousin's granddaughter, which I'd left at the frame shop several weeks ago. I hadn't heard from them so I called on Saturday and they said they'd e-mailed me on the 19th that it was finished. I never got that e-mail, but anyway, I went and picked it up. I think it came out great, and I hung it on the wall over my side of the bed. (Yes, it's too high on the wall, but I wanted it out of the way when I'm sitting up in bed or making the bed and moving around pillows and blankets. There's another large artwork to the left so it's not alone.)
Yesterday was the end-of-the-year concert for Dave's high school band. I walked to school in the early afternoon to watch from the audience, and the kids, as usual, did a great job, playing pieces including Percy Grainger's "Children's March," a portion of Dvorak's "New World Symphony" and Rimsky-Korsakov's clarinet concerto. (The jazz bands also performed pieces such as Count Basie's "Splanky," Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4" and Paul Desmond's "Take Five.")
Afterwards, while Dave went to dinner with a student and his family, I came home and had leftover pasta with the dog. I'd been invited to the dinner but it was really for this kid's teachers, not me. I was happy to relax in the garden instead!
I can understand the good feeling when a large organization makes such a beautiful gesture. The world doesn't seem to be moving towards open-mindedness and compassion, so it's even more moving.

DeleteThat's a very tidy bedside table....nice lamp! My bedside " shelves" have many books, tissues, glass of water , clock , radio, spider catching equipment, ( a glass and piece of cardboard) and plenty of dust!! Oh, and overnight , the dog's collar if I remember to take it off him!

I did not know that about our Percy! Yes, we got that clock free when we moved here, from a stash of stuff left behind by other teachers. God knows how old it is!

The founding family of Publix is not known for their open-mindedness. In fact at least one of them is a Q-Anon supporter, I think!
DeleteI do like seeing signs of inclusion and support, though I'd like to see them all year long and not just in June.

ReplyDeleteI also love "Take Five" and hope the high school band did it justice - it appears to be a "simple" piece, but in my experience, for something to sound simple it is often anything but.
They did a great job on it, considering it has an unusual time signature.

Yes, it really IS that simple, as much as people try to make it more complex.
DeleteLately I saw a post on SM of some person saying he doesn't care but why do they have to shove it in our faces. (My neighbor even expressed the same sentiment I reminded him that he didn't need to pay attention to what other people are expressing if he didn't want to see it). That one was in response to a young woman sitting at the table next to him minding her own business and wearing a rainbow pin. apparently someone minding their own business but not hiding who they are is shoving it in stranger's faces. By that logic every person wearing a cross is shoving their religion in everyone else's faces. Or wearing a wedding ring s\is shoving marriage in people's faces or a flag pin is shoving their patriotism in people's faces. But they only say it about gay and other gendered people. So I'm glad the grocery store is shoving Pride in their faces. People need to get over themselves.

DeleteI always get a little lift too when I see a supportive pride statement from a corporation all the way down to a small business.
ReplyDeleteIt really does make a difference. Some conservatives argue that it's just virtue signaling but it means something to me.
DeleteThe garden looks great, really beautiful. I'm a boomer, my first working years were spent programming, then database design. Then object oriented programming languages came, and my poor brain could not make the leap. It's interesting how we all get chased out of where we were.
