Here's our "Poodle Skirt" dahlia, which Dave bought pretty much because he liked the name. It is an interesting flower, much different from our other dahlias.
Yesterday was a day for getting organized. The carpet cleaner showed up promptly at 8 a.m. and gave the dining room carpet a steam cleaning. We had a few Olga-related spots in there. Olga was a very good girl when it came to house training, but a handful of times, when we weren't home and she wasn't feeling well, she'd slip into a secluded corner of the dining room to "do her business." Of course we immediately cleaned it up as best we could, but I'm glad to finally have that carpet professionally addressed.
Meanwhile, all the stuff from the dining room is piled in the front hallway. The carpet cleaner said the rug would dry in 2-3 hours. Not even close! When we went to bed it was still damp, and parts of it are slightly damp even this morning. We'll be able to move everything back today, though.
I also had to print some stuff for our citizenship ceremony on the 13th. The invitation letters we got from the Home Office said we had to bring them to the ceremony, and they had to be paper printouts, not in our e-mail or on our phones. So I went to school in the late morning and printed them there, and also took the opportunity to return all my library books. There were a bunch of books in the book return, including a few that were marked as lost at the end of the school year but were no doubt found in someone's closet or locker or office or gym bag, and I checked those in too.
I also made plans for a little trip early next week, when Dave will be gone -- bought a train ticket, made a hotel reservation. Watch this space!
In the evening Dave and I finally watched the Netflix film "Will and Harper," in which Will Ferrell and his trans-woman friend Harper Steele travel across the country and explore both their friendship and the limits of cultural acceptance in the rural USA. I enjoyed it a lot and found it quite touching and illuminating. Definitely worth watching if you haven't seen it already.

DeleteI'm lucky enough to not have carpet so any messes are easily cleaned up. The poodle skirt dahlia is lovely.
ReplyDeleteIf it were up to me we wouldn't have one either, but the dining room has only partial hardwood flooring, so not having carpeting is not an option.
DeleteI do want to see Will and Harper. Have read a lot about it and seen bits. Very exciting to have the dining room carpet clean. You probably don’t recognize it. “Is THAT the color?” We have an old (only about 35 years) oriental rug in the foyer that has never been cleaned, and we even had it on the terrace in Fuengirola. We are about to clean it and I think we’ll be surprised by the true colors. Right now, it’s mostly drab with a dark gray appearance. I want to go on a trip, too! Oh, that dahlia is unlike any one I’ve seen. Wow!

Quite a courageous movie. The key to overcoming any kind of hate is showing the humanity in each person, which I thought the film did quite well.

ReplyDeleteHa! This one's only about five years old so it hasn't had time to transform that drastically.
DeleteWe moved into this house in July and I learned how long it takes for steam cleaned carpets to dry in the high humidity of summer. I will only do it again in the low humidity of winter now.

DeleteI think I need to add Netflix to my streaming, though I hardly have time to watch Britbox and Acorn. But there is some good stuff there. I have a feeling carpet cleaners will have a field day sometime after Lizzie passes. She was good till a year or so ago when she decided to move her business elsewhere. Now I keep stocked in puppy pads and the family room looks terrible with layers of plastic between carpet and pads. At the lake she uses her litter box 100 percent. Neurotic girl. (And yes, the litterbox is ALSO by the puppy pads. Go figure.) Anxious to hear where you decide to go!
ReplyDeleteI had a cat years ago that began to "stray" and it turned out she was having kidney issues. Might be something to watch for in Lizzie. But yeah, sometimes cats are just neurotic! Netflix is well worth it, in my opinion -- it's always our first stop when we're looking for stuff to watch.

DeleteI'd like to see Will and Harper. I've seen a few clips from the movie. I've never cared for his comedy but I saw him in a dramatic role in a movie once and he was really good. I need to rent a steam cleaner to clean my couch.

DeleteI saw Will and Harper quite awhile ago and I can mainly say that Harper's strength and courage and grace are amazing. And Will was a good friend to her. IS a good friend to her. An important film as well as a touching one.

DeleteI've heard about Will and Harper and would like to see it. I love dahlias but have never seen one like that. Unique! Carpets never dry as quickly as they say, even in hot weather.
