In Which I Turn 59

Yes, today is in fact my birthday. Dave and I celebrated last night because it's always more fun to celebrate on a Saturday, and besides he has to go down to South London today to guest-conduct a musical ensemble for a friend. (Long story!)

We went to Canary Wharf, in East London. A couple of years ago, while there for the Winter Lights festival, I spotted a couple of restaurants that appeared to have been built on floating structures in the boat basin. I blogged a photo at the time. They've lived in my memory ever since, so we made a reservation at the Hawksmoor steak house.

Hawksmoor is a small chain, with ten restaurants in the UK, two in the USA (New York and Chicago) and one in Ireland.  Here was the view from our very good table by the window:

Not too shabby, right?! I like the reflected lights from the restaurant overlaid on the cityscape. I do wonder how long we're going to be able to maintain the kind of energy production that allows us to light up empty office buildings at night. Surely this is not sustainable in the long run of civilization. But in the meantime it looks nice.

I had an excellent dinner -- oysters, filet mignon with a couple of sides and a salad, and a pavlova for dessert with a candle in it. Oh, and two not-very-strong martinis! I gained approximately 20 pounds and will probably be diagnosed with gout.

But that's OK, because I plan to work it off today with a long walk somewhere. We shall see.

When left to my own devices I usually tend toward vegetarian meals, but you can't go to a steak house and not eat steak. And it was darn good, I must say. Dave and I were both very impressed.

Otherwise, yesterday was pretty chill. I spent it mostly on the couch reading. I'm about 140 pages into "The Old Curiosity Shop" and I fear the curiosity shop itself has already exited the plot, having been siezed and its contents sold off by a scoundrel. What will the old man and Little Nell do now?

The photo at the top, by the way, shows illuminated "Lightbenches" by LBO Lichtbank that were part of Winter Lights several years ago, and are now permanent features in Canary Wharf's Jubilee Park.

Did the lights on the light benches change ?

  2. Not too shabby, at all.
Happy birthday. A big one next year.
With LED lighting, the amount of electricity being used is so minimal and costs little. If the buildings have LED lighting, and I would think most would have been converted, I can't see it as a problem. Sometimes they are lit as cleaners move through a building too.

    1. That's a good point -- LED lights are a lot cheaper. And yes, the cleaners could have been on duty.

Good choice of destination for a celebration. Canary Wharf is quite impressive at night. We used to stay in a hotel there before early London City flights.

  8. HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVE! As you may recall, you share November 2nd with our little Margot. She is exactly 57 years younger than you. The celebratory meal sounds fabulous.

    We're only 1 1 /2 years apart; I'll be 58 in March.
You celebrated in style, and I like the photo with the restaurant lights reflected over the cityscape. As you say, lighting up empty office floors isn't sustainable, and one wonders why they're still doing it - don't companies talk about having to save money all the time?

    1. Well, Andrew may be right that there are cleaners about, or maybe they do it for security purposes. But it does seem mad, doesn't it?

  15. Wishing you a joyful and very happy birthday, Steve. This looks like it will be a year of change and excitement for you, with retirement in the offing (and considering the other mystery opportunity). What a good deal of anticipation there will be. It looks like you celebrated in great style and elegance and your dinner sounds spectacular. May it be all you hope it to be!

  16. Happy Birthday Steve!

I don’t eat a lot of red meat these days and usually avoid steak houses. If I do eat a steak, I much prefer to cook my own. But then, I can count the number of times I’ve had a fillet mignon on maybe three fingers.

  21. 59 is the cusp of a big mental change, at least it was for me. I didn't mind the 50s, they were good years for a lot of reasons but the 60s were hard for me to assimilate and culminated in my year of the selfie at 64. Anyway, happy birthday.

  29. Happy Birthday to you! That sounds like a wonderful way to celebrate your birthday. I remember being impressed by all those tall buildings and seeing them lit up at night has to be even more impressive. I saw quite a few interesting looking restaurants when I wandered around the area back in August.
Next year will be one of those major milestone birthdays for you and me both. It's just that mine will mark some 20 years ahead of yours.

  37. Darling Steve,

Wishing you a very Happy Birthday and many joyful returns. The celebration sounds perfect.

Many years ago, we had an apartment in Rotherhithe on the opposite side of the Thames to Canary Wharf. It was, of course, the poor neighbour of the glamorous skyscrapers of Canary Wharf but we did benefit from the marvellous riverscape at night. Just like Manhattan we used to say!!

    1. Well, the irony of living in Manhattan is that people outside the city -- in New Jersey, Queens and Brooklyn -- have the best views of Manhattan! I guess the same can be said for Canary Wharf!
