Signs of Spring
OK, it's a bit early to be talking about spring, especially with the USA buried under snow and at least another month of winter ahead of us. Here in London we've had some of our heaviest snowfalls in late February and early March. But the sun was bright yesterday, and this little robin was sitting in the Philadelphus outside the back door singing its heart out, and it reminded me that this interminable winter will indeed come to an end.
Just like the interminable administration of Donald Trump will come to an end. And that's all I'm going to say about that.
I think I solved the Alhambra problem, in a completely unimaginative way. I got online and Googled "How to get tickets to the Alhambra when they're sold out." And several private tour companies popped up offering tickets at a slight premium. I guess they must buy blocks of tickets and then sell them to tourists. Anyway, I reserved two and they've been confirmed so if all goes well, we'll get to visit after all. I'm a bit wary because reviews for this company are mixed and some people say their tickets only came through at the last minute or not at all. But I'm hoping for the best, and if not, we'll find other things to do in Granada.
I realize it's incredibly shallow of me to write about problems like this when the USA is in such turmoil. But I don't see how I can help the situation by going off about how repulsive it is to watch federal agents shoot innocent Americans in the street. All I can do from this distance is help elect more opposition to contain that lunatic as much as possible until his term is up. (OK, I had more to say, but I really am stopping now.)
I spotted our first daffodil yesterday! This is usually when we start seeing them -- end of January or so. Dave and I had his co-worker Lorraine and her boyfriend over for dinner last night, so I cut the daffodil and made it our centerpiece. Dave made parsnip and leek soup, beef stroganoff with broccoli on the side, and lemon posset for dessert. He served the posset with a store-bought blueberry tart. I teased him for serving two desserts, and when he brought them out, Lorraine said, "Two desserts!" But Dave insisted that it was one dessert in two dishes, because the tastes went well together. OK then.
We walked up to Leyland (a home improvements store) yesterday morning to get paint samples to make some choices about the redecorating. Unfortunately we are not in agreement about the options. For the living room I want something very similar to what we already have -- neutral beige. Dave wants very light blue or light green, but I think that's going to be too much blue/green, considering that our sofa is blue and our rug is green and all the paint in the hallway is celadon. In the bedroom, I'd like a dark gray-blue, but not too dark -- and the one Dave wants is, to my mind, too dark and too purple. So we still have to sort this out.
I also downloaded the garden cam yesterday, with results above. We see several of our neighborhood cats -- Blackie, Pale Cat and Tabby -- as well as at least three foxes. I don't believe any of the foxes are Q-Tip, unless he/she is the fox whose poor tail has been stripped at the end, but honestly I have trouble telling them all apart. We see one of the foxes bed down several times behind the hazel tree, where it seems quite comfy. I moved the garden cam so that it has a more direct view of that spot -- I'd like to get some clearer footage of it nesting back there. Hopefully repositioning the camera won't scare the fox away.

I think that the garden wildlife is getting used to you moving the camera around!
ReplyDeleteIt appears that they are further back to the right when it was raining? Possibly not enough footage during rain to judge that.
Oh, not two desserts, they were definitely two complementary halves of the whole!!
Hmm. Paint colours can be a minefield!! I painted over the plummy purple with a neutral mid grey-blue in our bedroom...much calmer.
Minneapolis...becomes far more real when you know good people there....
Yeah, it seems the foxes also like to tuck behind that large Philadelphus at right. (The same one the robin was singing from!)
DeleteDeciding about wall paint is not easy. You could of course compromise in that one of you gets the last word about the living room and the other one about the bedroom.
ReplyDeleteAnd have the other one hate/dislike being in either room? Too risky.
DeleteThat's what we did, ultimately! I don't think either of us are so invested in these decisions that we'll chafe at being in the space.
DeleteI am very boring when it comes to paint colours. We have white and slate grey. The colour comes from the soft furnishings.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your Alhambra tickets!
I've always tended toward neutrals for walls as well. Dave likes his color, though.
DeleteI'm very lucky when choosing paint colours, hubby leaves it to me, we always chat but he can't ever picture the end results. Hope your tickets came through OK, as for the orange one, why, oh why can't those around him see what the rest of the world sees at best a bully at worse, well you add your own thought there........
ReplyDeleteI'm astonished at how many people continue to support Trump, though I think the tide is turning a bit.
DeleteI live alone so I get to choose all the paints. And I like that.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it's hard to balance speaking out every day w/having the blog be what you want; an archive almost. But you absolutely do speak up and out; that's what we all need to do. I have unfollowed blogs where they are just prattling on about their new vacation home, etc. Our world here is just awful; some notice should be made of that.
Sometimes I feel like I have to say something, but I'm always wary of driving away people who don't want to read politics. You can go too far in any direction, I suppose!
DeleteChooses colors can be challenging enough without having two different ideas in mind. Good luck. It will be nice to have everything fresh and new. “This interminable winter” says it all.
ReplyDeleteAnd CHOOSING colors, too. I know you understood, but the error got on my nerves.
DeleteHa! Yes, I understood, but I can also understand why it annoyed you!
DeleteAs much as we deplore what's happening in troubled regions, life must go on and early signs of spring are most welcome. It's Garden Birdwatch weekend, too. =[
ReplyDeleteYes indeed! I took some notes but I haven't sent them in yet. Pretty much the usual suspects here: blue tits, great tits, pigeons, parakeets, starlings, robins. My Merlin bird app said we had goldfinches too but I couldn't see them.
DeleteHi im a reader of your blog we lived not far from Granada for20 years and visited the Alhambra many times be sure to visit the gardens too you won’t be dissapointed Frederica now back in yorkshire
ReplyDeleteOK, thanks for the hint! I vaguely remember the gardens myself from my visit in 1994. It sounds so exotic to live in Granada!
DeleteI think I am with you on the paint colours.
ReplyDeleteThat guy getting shot to dead was truly horrible to see. It was pure murder by ICE generally, but specifically by the person who did the shooting. May justice prevail.
It was hideous. A travesty of justice and those ICE agents should be prosecuted.
DeleteIt's almost impossible to pick paint with someone else, so good luck with that! And tell Dave his dinner sounds wonderful but as soon as I hit send I'm off on a Google search for posset, a new word to me. That robin and daffodil are just the sights for this cold morning here in the police state called the USA. Every day worse and worse. I hope everything with the Alhambra works well, but somehow I don't think you will be bored, no matter what happens!
ReplyDeletePosset is a very British thing. We'd never heard of it either until we moved here.
DeleteOur portion of "the storm" gave us an inch of snow at 5AM that was gone by 7AM.
ReplyDeleteThere is a chance of rain and ice today, though.
Well, that's better than expected, right?
DeleteI'm perfectly happy to have you prattle on about spring and the end of Trump. At this time in the seasonal year and political year, it is what keeps most of us sane, thinking about what is coming in the future.
ReplyDeleteTo my point on the media focusing on things (and I'm not saying there shouldn't be some focus on Minnesota) but ICE has a heavy presence in a half dozen other states right now and there aren't shootings and huge protests going on. But Minnesota chose to politicize it to the max, the media decided to amp it to the max and some citizens have chose to actively interfere in the operation, some driving cars and some carrying guns, and so here we are. It is a tragedy. It was entirely predictable.
My wife and I have never agreed on paint colors. Long ago I made a decision that it wasn't important to me that I wanted to argue about it so I just dutifully apply whatever colored paint she decides on. I save my proverbial ammunition for things that I do feel more strongly about.
The focus has definitely amped up the tension. But what's the alternative -- to ignore it? That doesn't seem healthy either. I agree our media ecosystem is a problem but I think that's mainly a function of too many outlets (including so-called "independent," aka untrained, journalists), too much airtime and too little editing.
DeleteP.S. The U.S. has the same ticket problem they are trying to combat. I.e. large internet bots buying out all the tickets and then selling them for inflated prices.
ReplyDeleteThere is money to be made, with so many people traveling!
DeleteGood luck with the color choices. We have a hard time agreeing upon that ourselves. And great that you were able to secure tickets!
ReplyDeleteI think we've finally settled on some decisions!
DeleteYes, we must acknowledge what's happening, and do what we can to combat it. Resistance also includes staying calm, running our lives as best we can and enjoying what we cab. Otherwise they'll have won.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's true too. We do need to maintain stability for ourselves and the people around us.
DeleteI don't like conflict so I tend to go with whatever Mike wants (if I REALLY care then I might try a little harder to get my way, but so many things aren't worth the effort in my eyes.).
ReplyDeleteYeah, I feel that way about paint too. It's not something I'm super invested in. All the same, I'm glad we made the choices we did.
DeletePaint? People actually repaint walls? Huh. Now there's an interesting concept.
ReplyDelete(I may or may not have a few issues with this subject.)
Ha!
DeleteOh dear. Paint.
ReplyDeleteNot to add fuel to the fire, but perhaps a hint of silvery gray would compliment both the blue couch and the green rug.
*backs quietly out of the room*
Well, thanks for the suggestion! We went with the light beige (more like ivory), which I think was a good option. I think gray might have been too "cool." We need some warmth in that room.
DeleteBesides voting, you can contribute to groups that are making a difference in the courts and in the assistance to poor people that need help with food distribution or health care.
ReplyDeleteDon't you like the paint colors that you already have?
I do contribute to the ACLU every year, and they're fighting a lot of this stuff in the courts. And yes, I like our colors, but Dave wanted a change.
DeleteI'm for the beige I think in the living room, second choice would be the blue but def not the green. Dark colors do work well and I like purple but I think based on your description I'd like the gray blue better. One solution is to let Dave choose for one room and you choose for the other.
ReplyDeleteWe're at the executing people in plain sight in public stage of our descent into fascism.
I mean, it's incredible, isn't it? And incredible how people who watch those videos can come away with such starkly different interpretations of what happened, based on their preconceptions.
DeleteI wonder what happened to that one fox's tail. I hope the fur comes back. I love the daffodil. As for what is happening in Minneapolis, it is beyond outrageous. What I saw in that video was murder, plain and simple. I can't believe this is happening. When will our legislators get some backbone and stand up for the rule of law?
ReplyDeleteI shudder to think what that poor fox endured with that tail! Yes, that guy was murdered by ICE for no reason -- no question.
DeleteI'm with you on the LR, but would have to see the bedroom in person to offer an opinion.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad my son and his wife no longer live in Minneapolis.
And some of us are buried under ice, not snow. I'd prefer snow.
I agree -- snow is better than ice. (And ICE.)
DeleteI always pick the paint colours, otherwise OH would paint everything in Magnolia! We are farther north than you in the UK and our daffs are jsut showing through the soil, but the snowdrops are out - my happy flower. Xx
ReplyDeleteI'm sort of a Magnolia person myself, so I can't be too critical of that tendency!
DeleteI'm surprised you get to pick colors. Most landlords would just send in buckets of builder beige.
ReplyDeleteYes, they're being very generous allowing us to make our own choices.
DeletePaint is tricky because it's a lot of work to re-paint if one makes a mistake. I had a bunch of samples and had the painter put examples on the wall. (had to buy small cans of each color though) I thought they were all taupe but one was heavily blue and another had purple tones. I knew right away which one I wanted. (repose gray) We are usually no where near daffodil time (more like March?) but this year everything is early. I agree on the Minnesota crisis; it's been horrifying.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't actually seen it on the wall -- I hope we don't wince when we do!
DeleteAs for paint, it is never easy when choosing colors. Even the finish requires a decision, I like a satin finish.
ReplyDeleteThe loss of life in MN at the hands of ICE is so wrong. Things have gone rogue and unpredictable. The most dangerous combination possible.
The government budget deadline is the end of January 2026 and personally, I think there could be another shutdown in an attempt to get ICE reigned in. More unknowns.
Oh, yeah, we didn't specify finish. Surely the painters know what to do, though? Ugh.
DeleteSending Positive Vibes Your Way
ReplyDeleteCheers
And back to you! We need them everywhere!
DeleteLovely to see your photographs of the robin and daffodil.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Thank you!
DeleteWhat on earth is a posset? I shall google and look up Celadon at the same time, having no idea what colour that is. I agree blue walls might be too much blue with the couch and the green rug. As for the bedroom I suggest placing both "chips" on the wall where they will be seen in all lights, morning, afternoon and evening and at night with the lights on. If you still can't agree after that, try a different colour altogether. What colours are already in your bedroom? Bed covers, chair, books, ornaments and so on, perhaps you can find something that ties them all together.
ReplyDeleteNothing in the bedroom is very color-coded except our bedspread, which is really old and could stand to be replaced. There's a ratty green carpet that came with the apartment but the bed almost covers it entirely!
DeleteI'm with you on both colors. With all the color, plants and artwork think the living room will be too much.
ReplyDeleteUltimately we went neutral for the LR -- the best option, I think!
DeleteWhat a lovely photo of Robin Redbreast, my favourite small bird.
