Jinkx as Judy

Whew! I was out and about almost all day yesterday, because I had theatre tickets in the afternoon. I came across this sculpture near Liverpool Street on the way to the theatre. (More about that in a moment.) It reminds me of the Atomium in Brussels, though obviously not as large.

The day began quietly enough. I watered all the plants and finally did some maintenance on our big yucca.

You may remember this yucca used to have two stalks, and both were scraping the ceiling. Dave and I have been debating what to do with it. I considered planting it outside, but I don't think it would survive a cold winter. We moved it onto the patio several weeks ago, and the top got pretty badly sunburned because it wasn't used to being outdoors. So yesterday I cut off one stalk and cut the other shorter, but left some leaves so the plant could continue to photosynthesize. The cut stalk should grow new sprouts, and when that happens I'll cut down the other tall one too.

Anybody want yucca cuttings? I have a ton of them.

My theatre ticket was for 2:30 p.m., so just after lunch I left the house and headed to Walthamstow, in northeast London. Getting there involved taking public transport in a sort of V shape on the map, going southeast into Westminster and then back out again, if you can imagine that. Unfortunately, I discovered midway there that part of the tube was shut down for an emergency and I had to devise an alternate route, which made me a little late -- but I was meeting some friends so they arranged for me to pick up my ticket at the window and all was well. I only missed the first ten or fifteen minutes of the show, and I was hardly the only one, given the transit snafu.

I was seeing Jinkx Monsoon as Judy Garland in a play called "End of the Rainbow." Monsoon became famous more than ten years ago on "RuPaul's Drag Race," which I have never watched. Many of the audience members were young people obviously there to see Jinkx and familiar with her Drag Race persona -- I wondered how much they knew or even cared about Judy Garland. But it was a good play, if a bit strenuous, and Jinkx did well singing Garland's famous songs and portraying her struggle with disastrous addictions. It's great that she's helping to bring Garland's legacy to a younger generation.

It struck me that if the audience members were 25 or so, as many appeared to be, their seeing this play would be like me seeing one about Mary Pickford or Jean Harlow -- actresses so far back in the foggy past that I can only barely picture their faces. Then again, everyone sees "The Wizard of Oz," so that gives Garland a sort of evergreen fame.

Afterwards my friends and I decamped to this terrific pub in Walthamstow. It had a huge outdoor seating area both in front and in back, so we could enjoy the summery weather while we had some food and a couple of pints.

The window grill in the men's room made clear which loo I was in. Yes, the women's room said "Girls girls girls."

Afterwards, as I walked back to the tube, I passed this building, known as the "Ancient House." It turns out that it may indeed be the oldest house in London, built in 1435 or thereabouts, during the reign of King Henry VI. Inside it has been remodeled and looks quite comfortable.

Fortunately, by this time, the tube was running normally and getting home was much easier!

  1. A good day to be in London, apart from the tube problem - culture, going to a pub with friends, walking around and coming across unusual places like the Ancient House. I've never heard about it but I know there can'be much left in London from the time before the Great Fire.

    1. The Ancient House is a great example of how, even in relatively outlying neighborhoods, you can stumble across interesting bits of history.

  2. What a charming house. I wonder if it is on the Listed Building Register? If not, then it should be!

    1. It's Grade II listed, apparently. (Or so Wikipedia tells me.)

    2. should be grade 1 with that history!

    3. You would think! Maybe it's been too renovated.

  3. I think it would be best to visit the "MEN MEN MEN" facility and not the "BOYS BOYS BOYS" one. If there are boys in the second one they might make up lurid tales about you - even though we, your blogmates, know that you are a man with blameless moral credentials. Unfortunately, mud tends to stick.

    1. We are all girls and boys at this pub! I guess they're appealing to our youthful spirits?

  4. I would cut both yucca stalks and watch the new growth happen.
I am making assumptions about the audience, but if they don't know who Judy Garland was, they need to go back to gay school.
Fine weather and sitting outside an English pub is delightful.
The 1435 house looks incredibly neat and like a reproduction.

    1. I want to keep some greenery for now so the plant can continue feeding itself. The other stalk can come down later. I'm not sure younger gays are onboard with the whole Garland-worship thing.

  5. I'm a wee bit jealous of you seeing Jinkx. I love Drag Race and the art of drag and Jinkx was always one of the best. I would love to see that show and home it comes to America.

  7. It sounds like a great day. I loved Judy Garland and every song she ever did. I don't know Jinx but I think this would be a terrific show. And that pub looks just terrific. What a great day.

  8. I saw something just the other day online about Jinkx as Judy. When I saw that sculpture, I immediately thought of the one in Brussels.

It sounds like you're staying busy. Makes you wonder how you had time to work, doesn't it?
That Ancient House is so beautiful. Imagine if the walls could talk.

  10. What a full day! History, friends, theater, the lot. I should have thought a lot of young people would know Dorothy, if not much about the rest of her story.

  11. Well, if not for the transportation issue, that sounds like practically the perfect day. Did the play wring your emotions? Did you cry? I probably would have.
"Boys, Boys, Boys" makes me think of August and Levon. That is exactly what someone says to them at least ten times a day. However, exclamation points are involved.
How incredible that a house built that long ago is still a lived-in home. I just love that.
I am excited to see how that yucca responds to some tough love.

    1. I did not cry, but maybe only because I've heard the story of Garland's decline so many times before. There is apparently a gay coffee shop in Soho called "Boys! Boys! Boys!"

The oldest house in London looks original from the outside and the inside update is lovely. It's for rent. Imagine the rent?
Yuccas are typically hardy. If anyone can give the Yucca a new life, it is definitely SR!

  13. So, Jinkx is in drag as Judy Garland? Amazing that the house still exists. I wonder how much of the building is original. 600 years is a long time it seems for stuff not to have been repaired and replaced.

    1. Yes, Jinkx portrays Judy. Supposedly the beams and timbers are original, according to a plaque on the outside walls, but the inside has been extensively renovated.

  24. I have no advice about any plants, especially indoor ones. I'm OK with annuals which have only a limited time of life. :) The play and get together sounds great. The Wizard of Oz terrified me as a child and I don't think I ever watched Judy Garland in anything else.
