Sweet Relief, and My Toes

It's cooler today, and we had more rain. I woke in the night and heard it pattering on the roof. Again, not a lot -- just a drizzle -- but better than nothing.

The Brugmansia seems to be thriving. We kept watering and watering it during our hot spells, and in return it has grown and now has five blossoms and 11 buds! The only way I could show the whole plant was to shoot it from above (and unfortunately I couldn't manage that without also showing you my toes).

Here it is from the side. Those zucchini-like things are buds for forthcoming flowers.

And here's what my weather app is telling me we can expect for the next 10 days. Woo hoo! If this proves true -- and that's a big IF, given how chancy the forecasts have been lately -- it will go a long way to setting the garden to rights after our drought. I don't think it will fully restore our water levels to where they should be, but this is just what we need for the plants -- repeated, soaking rain. And look how chilly it's going to get! Not sure the Brugmansia will like that.

I belatedly realized I forgot to tell you yesterday what happened with my ear-piercing plans. I intended to get it done Monday, but when I called our local piercing place, they said the woman who does it is on vacation until Thursday. I could have gone somewhere else -- I mean, it's London, and there are a zillion places to get pierced -- but instead I just scheduled an appointment for Thursday. So it's still happening, just not immediately.

I heard back from our travel insurer about my camera claim. They wanted more information, which I sent just now. So presumably that's grinding along. I'm hoping to go look at replacement cameras today. I've been reluctant to do so because I haven't wanted to leave Bailey alone, but I also have to live my life and the dog has to be comfortable getting along without me!

I'm still reading Derek Jarman's later diaries. Every once in a while I come across a passage like this -- where the words have been visibly redacted. I'm mystified about why this was done. Why not just eliminate that paragraph entirely, rather than show the blacked-out text? I can only assume that the lawyers intervened at a late stage in the editing process, and the words had to be redacted this way to avoid upsetting the type flow on all the ensuing pages. Of course it makes me wonder what he said!

  1. It's raining here at long last, a steady amount, I can hear our garden groaning with pleasure.

  2. I woke up to the sound of rain trickling through the drainpipes, it was such a relief. The Brugmansia looks tropical and beautiful so is probably loving London at the moment.
Jarman would have been a blogger if he had lived long enough.

    1. Yes, I'm sure Jarman would have kept a blog -- like many diarists.

  3. I see nine days of rain forecast for you! I hope it happens in decent enough amounts to revive your garden. Everybody's garden really.

    1. Let's hope it doesn't dwindle into nothing, as some of our forecasted rain has...

  4. I had heard that Brugmansia is highly toxic and can have potent hallucinogenic effects. If your blog posts become too weird we shall know why ...

    1. Ha! Yes, like all daturas it can be hallucinogenic and/or poisonous. I won't be eating it, I promise.

  5. The Brugmansia flowers are exotic, not so much your toes. We had rain at 1:00 this morning - such a pleasing sound.

  6. Rain at last. Since that was a large part of my life growing up in the UK and longing for sunshine, it's odd to read your joy, but I get it.

    1. Yeah, this summer has not been typical English weather -- at least not typical of the past.

  7. There is nothing like blacking out text to make curiosity rise, whereas if left intact, may have been ignored.

    1. Exactly! If they'd just left that paragraph out we'd be none the wiser.

  8. We are still in heat wave no rain .... I'm over it.

I'd be going crazy about the redactions!!! WHY???????????????????

    1. I really think it had to be a late-stage deletion. I can't imagine why else they'd do it.

  9. A slow rain will soak in, a big storm will flood off. Savor the slow steady rain.

  10. Isn't a bit of rain simply amazing? We've had a couple of hours, nothing much, but the lawn is greening and the blueberries are no longer shriveled like raisins.
Looking forward to your piercing results. Have you chosen your studs design?
I vaguely remember a report (Guardian?) about the publishers redacting content from Jarman's diaries to avoid potential legal proceedings.

I am so happy you have rainy days ahead. Long may it rain!

  12. I almost wonder if they did the redacting that way on purpose - to make it seem more intriguing.

  14. Great news that the weather has cooled down and the rain has returned. It was sad seeing so much brown in London where green has always prevailed.
Those redacted lines are interesting. I've never seen that in a book before.

  15. Your Brugmansia has beautiful trumpet-like yellow blooms. It must be very happy in that spot and all the flat stones placed around it give it a very nice backdrop. Together they are a great display.
The rain is so very welcomed and your cooler temperatures at 60-70's are ideal. I am more than ready for cool weather.
I think you are right, an editor wanted some deletion, and redaction was the cheaper option.

    1. The flat stones are the patio -- the Brugmansia is on a tabletop on the patio. I was actually quite high up when I took that photo!

  16. I'm very happy to hear that the temps are going down and that you'll get some much needed rain. I'm still waiting for my lawn to dry out this summer. The climate is a mess right now.
Good for you on getting your ears pierced. If not now, then when? Exactly. I need to look at things like as well and stop putting things off that I really want to do, although the list is very short. I actually don't have a list:) I may make one though.

    1. You probably have a mental list, whether you've really thought about it or not. Most of us do!

  17. Your angel trumpet must be a different variety of yellow than mine. The flowers on mine ar longer and more slender and they leaves on yours are smaller. So glad you got some rain and cooler temps. Still waiting for that here. It will be a while.

  18. That brick wall of redactions would make me want to climb over it!! What's on the other side??WTF?? Intriguing. And you are right, why was that paragraph not just left blank.

  19. I've never seen redactions in a book before. I would be insanely curious! I would LOVE some rain. It looks like I'll need to bring an umbrella for my Ireland trip. At least I won't be hot!

  20. No 50's here for us yet but we have been getting down to the mid 60's at night which is a change. I planted some fall peas the other morning and actually wore a heavy long sleeved shirt over my t-shirt for part of the planting, the first since probably sometime in April.

I once had a boss who gave me something or other and he had redacted several things on it with a sharpie. But he didn't realize that I could just flip it over and read it through the paper. I don't remember what had been redacted though so it mustn't have been earth shattering information.

    1. Yeah, Sharpie redaction never works. I've done it at work but usually it's possible to see through it. And of course everyone looks!

  22. I would find that redacting very disconcerting. That weather looks glorious. We should be dropping into the 80s soon (but for how long, I don’t know). Such delightful toes.

  23. I'm jealous of your forecast. Still no rain for us and the official highs the past three days were 102, 106, and 104. I have a feeling it will be that or more today and there's no end in sight. But hey, it's August in the south!

    1. Oh, yeesh. That's hot. And of course it's super-humid too.

  24. I, too, am jealous of your rain. Every day our forecast says basically, "No rain today but tomorrow and the next day and the next day after that and after that, there will be rain." And then the next day- no rain.
    Beautiful brugmansia.

    1. Well, that's been happening here too, which is why I'm skeptical we're actually going to GET all this rain. But even a fraction is better than nothing.

  25. Possibly the rédaction was left like that intentionally as a comment on how things were... I wonder if a later edition might have all visible?

    1. This is the most recent edition, as far as I know. Maybe an earlier edition wasn't redacted, and the publishers got legal threats? Hmmm...

  26. I'm glad you are getting some rain and the temps are better. We have better temps here, too. I think the redaction is done to be dramatic.
