Ike and Pinky II
This was the sunset last night from my stepsister's back yard, with the clouds so low and moisture-laden it seemed I could touch them. I am definitely in the semi-tropics!
My flight yesterday was pretty uneventful. I had trouble getting to the airport, though. I took a Thameslink train from West Hampstead straight to Gatwick, and somewhere around Croydon it came to a dead stop. We sat on the tracks, motionless, and sat, and sat. People all around me were starting to freak out because they had flights to catch, but I was so far ahead of my scheduled departure time that I wasn't too worried. More annoyed than anything.
Finally the driver came on and said it was a signal failure blah blah blah (which is actually what he sounded like on the terrible speaker system) and we would be moving shortly. We finally pulled into Gatwick about an hour behind schedule, and everyone sprinted from the train except me. I took it at a leisurely pace.
On the plane, the flight attendant provided me with an extra gin & tonic and an extra white wine without even being asked! As I often say of Dave, she wasn't just an enabler -- she was an enforcer! "You WILL drink this and be happy."
I obliged.
I read Ike Eisenmann's memoir of growing up as a child actor. I polished off the whole book, a little less than 300 pages, and it was quite interesting. (It's been on my blog sidebar as "What I'm Reading" for ages, but I didn't actually start it until yesterday!)
For example, I was intrigued to learn that although he starred in numerous movies with Kim Richards, including the famous Disney film "Escape to Witch Mountain," they didn't really know each other and weren't friends. Apparently they barely spoke on the set when they weren't acting. Eisenmann also wrote about his difficult father (a frustrated actor himself) and his move into voice-over work when he became an adult, a little-known but apparently lucrative dimension of filmmaking.
I also watched "Three Days of the Condor" and "Blow-Up," two of my favorite old movies which happen to have been downloaded on my computer and thus accessible without Internet.
In Tampa I collected my bag and made my way to the rental car terminal (above, with groovy fishnet wall hanging). I am now the proud driver of a very sleek-looking black Honda Accord.
I spent last night chatting with my stepsister and her husband and son, and today we're going to breakfast and maybe working on getting some estimates for selling my late stepmother's jewelry.
Oh, and we have another addition to the family. My stepmother's elderly chihuahua, Pinky, died recently and my nephew (who lives in her house) was very attached to it. So when a relative of my brother-in-law was looking for a home for her own chihuahua, they adopted it right away -- and believe it or not, its name was already Pinky! So now we have Pinky II.
This is a terrible picture because the light was so dim, but it cracks me up. Doesn't she look like a gerbil?
And one more piece of interesting trivia: My stolen AirPods, which I hadn't checked up on in ages since they disappeared with my camera bag in Rome, are now in Algiers, Algeria! I can still see them on Apple's "Find My" app. I have no way of knowing whether the camera is there as well. I guess moving around stolen merchandise is indeed an international skill.

I thought Pinky WAS gerbil.
ReplyDeleteAnd your AirPods are having quite the adventure.
Your airpods are traveling as much as you. Does this mean they're in a vehicle being driven all over? Can you arrange with an Algerian gang to retrieve them??
ReplyDeleteI thought Pinky was a gerbil too! Your first photo is amazing. I am sure the weather in Florida is quite different than London. Your AirPods have had quite the adventure!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the USA.
ReplyDeleteOne Of Your Better Posting For Sure - Welcome Back To The States
ReplyDeleteStay Marvelous ,
Cheers
Pinky II is adorable, and yes very gerbil like. It would seem that your AirPods are having almost as a good a time as you. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Pinky 11 has found a new home. Have a good visit.
ReplyDeleteI would have never guessed that Pinky II was a dog. So glad you arrived safely and it sounds like a good time and a productive one to come!
ReplyDeleteNo. I do not think that Pinky II looks like a gerbil. She looks like a weasel. And let me get this straight about your sidebar. Under "What I'm Reading" you list books you intend to read in the future? That seems sly to me. Sly like a weasel.
ReplyDeleteThat's a very pretty sunset! I'm glad you had a nice flight. I can't believe you read a book and watched 2 movies.
ReplyDeleteHello! I wave at you from the top of the state! Enjoying the humidity?
ReplyDeleteNow see- THAT is why you leave for the airport at least three hours early. Don't people understand this?
I really like that fishnet art. It is indeed groovy.
Pinky II. What a noble beast!
I'm like you and always try to get to the airport way before my flight time. Glad your flight went well. Enjoy your visit and hope the weather cooperates!
ReplyDeleteI am glad you made your flight despite the train malfunction. As they say, "What can go wrong, does go wrong." It is wise to allow for happenstance.
ReplyDeleteThe flight sounds just fine and the G&T made it even better.
Pinky II has a nice new home. She is adorable in a gerbil/doggy sort of way.
How cool that you can follow your stolen airpods to Algeria!!! What a world.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Hell. Who'd a thunk there could be another Pinky? Next stop: Algeria. You will be the enforcer who retrieves stolen goods.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Pinky does look like a gerbil! That's a beautiful sky; my sunsets are mostly obscured by tall trees. Such is life in Western Washington.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you got there in time...Hi to the fam and enjoy your day.
ReplyDeleteThe enabler/enforcer bit is hilarious! I enjoyed all the photos, even weasley little Pinky II.
ReplyDeleteThanks to technology, I don't think my attention span is long enough to crank out 300 pages in a single go. I played chauffer today, taking my book and reading at every stop and still got maybe only 150 of them read. I'm just too easily distracted.
ReplyDeleteYou planned well and had lots to occupy yourself on this flight.
ReplyDeletePinky11 makes me laugh! What a snookums! Have a great time in the semi tropics, the sky certainly showed off for you!
ReplyDeletenot eleven..two.
DeleteHave AirPods, will travel. I think you need to take a more flattering photo of Pinky 2 before you depart, if that's possible.
ReplyDeleteA flight attendant who understands the stress of travel is a treasure.
I thought I was looking at Steve the Otter! That is funny about your airpods. Maybe you can rondevouz with them!
ReplyDeleteMagical Sky 🧡
ReplyDeleteGood to know you arrived safe and sound.
The sunset photo is very beautiful. You read an entire book? How fast do you read?
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could stop in Algiers on your way home. Bailey looks like a river otter to me. One of my aunts left her estate to her 12 nieces and nephews. One cousin and surviving aunt split up her substantial jewelry and antiques collection between them before the estate was settled.
ReplyDeleteIt must have been such a relief having started your journey to the airport very early! I do the same for my almost weekly trips to Offenburg, usually taking one or two trains earlier than suggested for the first leg of the trip from my town into Stuttgart main station, where I normally get on a long-distance train taking me to Offenburg without having to change trains again. More often than not, when I later check on the local train originally suggested, I find that the local train was late or cancelled, and I wouldn't have made the connection in Stuttgart.
