Cleaning Up the Kingdom

These hazel leaves are jammed into a joint in the fence right outside our kitchen window -- a reminder of the tree work done on Friday. The tree trimmers hauled all the branches down the side return and some of the bits got caught in the fence.

I woke up this morning thinking it was 7 a.m. -- but no, it was 6 a.m., because today we're moving off British Summer Time and back to Greenwich Mean Time. These pesky clock changes! This one wasn't on my radar at all until another blogger mentioned that Europe was changing this weekend -- or at least some parts of Europe -- and that's when I realized we were too. And then I promptly forgot until just now.

Speaking of blogs, I backed mine up yesterday. Google has changed the way it's done. It used to be that we could download a backup directly from our blog dashboard, and it would come as an XML file. But now we have to request the data from Google -- they prepare it and put it in a ZIP file, or in my case two ZIP files because I post so much, and they e-mail you when it's ready for you to download. Kind of a pain and I have no idea how I'd reconstitute the blog from these files should it ever be deleted. But at least I have something.

It would probably be healthier to just say c'est la vie if the servers crash or the blog vanishes through some other technical mishap. All things are temporary, right? But I like feeling that extra bit of security.

The Thanksgiving cactuses -- which are actually more like Halloween cactuses, in our case -- are about to burst into bloom. As you can see, I'm getting flowers on all four of them -- my two pink ones, my white one from blog reader Frances and my salmon-colored one. I fit them all onto a single tabletop for this picture, but they're packed a little too tightly to be happy there in the long term.

I spent yesterday morning picking up debris in the garden. As you can imagine, there's a lot of it. I filled four yard waste bags, and the council will only pick up three at a time, so I can't do any more until after Tuesday when they're collected.

The process was complicated by Bailey, who likes pulling sticks out of the bag right after I've put them in. Thanks for the help, dog.

Here she is keeping an eye on her kingdom. (Or queendom?)

Speaking of kingdoms, Dave and I are about to start the last season of "Game of Thrones." I feel like we've been watching it forever. We mistakenly thought last night's episode was the last, and when we were about halfway through I said, "There's an awful lot of unresolved stuff going on here!" That's when we realized there's still one more season to go. We also just finished the latest of Ryan Murphy's "Monster" series on Netflix, about Lizzie Borden (and weirdly, also Aileen Wuornos). It was an imaginative re-telling of those crimes but I'm wondering how much is based on fact.

  1. Did you know they are called Christmas Cactus here which is even more wrong for yours!
The neighbours behind my garden had a willow cut right back a year ago and this year it was even leafier and denser than previously, and the leaves are still hanging on.

    1. Christmas cactuses are apparently a slightly different plant -- they bloom later and have a different-shaped leaf. I didn't know this myself until a couple of years ago!

    2. Yet, our Christmas Cactus is blooming in exactly the same way as yours right at the moment. She's at least almost in the right time of year this time, one year she bloomed at Easter. She's definitely a Christmas Cactus as she's now over 100 years old.

  2. "Monsters" was extensively advertised on Netflix for a while, but after it prompted me to read up on Lizzie Borden on wikipedia, I didn't feel the need to watch the series.
I am currently watching the new "Matlock" series and enjoy it a lot more than I thought I wood. Kathy Bates is great and must be one of the most underrated actresses of our time; she's been in so many series and films but most people may remember only her face but not her name.
Collecting the garden debris must look like a great game to Bailey! All those sticks, just for her!

    1. Kathy Bates IS great in everything she does. I haven't seen this new "Matlock" but maybe we should try it!

  3. All that time and effort that we regular bloggers have put in to nurturing our babies. To think it could all disappear in a puff of smoke, Google pulling its support, an AI glitch or a Russian bot invasion. It might be heartbreaking but as you suggest - all things are temporary. I am pleased to say that I have never seen one episode of "Game of Thrones".

  4. Did you turn over and sleep for another hour? It's easier to adjust in autumn when the clocks go back.
After the loss of my old blog, I now back up my blog and the system you described is the only one I know.

  5. Good job. Bailey, too. If you hung clothes on the line, she’d be removing them from the laundry bag as you folded them. I’ve been curious about Ryan Murphy’s Lizzie Borden, but know he took enormous liberties and that tends to annoy me.

    1. Yeah, I have to keep reminding myself that this is in no way a documentary, and what I'm watching might never have happened.

  6. The debris is dog heaven. Sticks everywhere! She's such an appealing character.
I rarely have the patience to watch an entire series of anything these days. If they made a summary running through the entire plot, I'd be fine with it. Currently I'm reading a medieval historical fiction novel and keep wanting them to speed up the action! So impatient.

  7. The cactuses are just lovely 💕

Yes, somes series last forever and finally one gets fed up,
and then there are series you could watch till the cows come home.
We've been watching La Promesa (Spanish series) since 2023,
practically every day, and are loving it. Season 5 now. 😊

  9. The Lizzie Borden story has always fascinated me. One of my favorite books is See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt. It tells the story fron the POVS of Lizzie, her sister, the maid and a stranger. Loved the retelling.

    1. Oh, interesting. I don't know that book. Lizzie is having a bit of cultural resurgence -- there's a graphic novel for younger readers published a couple of years ago about her case. (!)

  13. You reminded me to go have a look at my Christmas or Whatever Cactus which I simply put out on the back deck in a corner by the old kitchen because it was about one leaf away from death and forgot about it. It looks great! Green and full of new growth! This is the only cactus of that sort I've ever been able to keep alive and TA-DA! all I had to do was completely ignore it. I do not seen any buds on it though.
I do really like that picture of Bailey in your jungle room.

    1. Maybe yours is a true Christmas cactus, in which case it might bloom later. There are also Easter cacti that bloom in the spring.

  14. I noticed this morning that the blogroll on my sidebar isn't showing latest posts again and had defaulted to an alphabetical listing. Many years ago I ordered a PDF of the first two years(with the intention of getting one for every year) from a site where you could get a PDF or have the year of posts printed in a book. The PDF was only about $3 at the time vs $50 or more for the book. I wish I could remember what site it was.

I fill up the back of the truck with fallen branches fairly regularly without having any tree work done.

    1. Blog2Book? I had a book made of selected posts from my first year and gave it to my sister as a Christmas gift. The whole year was too expensive.

    2. I know Blurb offers a PDF option, but I think that's usually in conjunction with buying a printed book. Or maybe that's just how I did it. (I never tried with my blog but I've compiled photo books using Blurb.)

  15. 4 bags of garden debris and more to come is a lot to pick-up.
Bailey likes tree branches and my Henry does too. He runs with his branch. I tell him, "Go get your branch and he does." While I am mowing leaves with the mulching mower, Henry plays with his stick. Fall fun!

  17. I had to start over with a clipping after my Christmas cactus died of old age I think! But the new one is growing quite well. I'm curious if I will get any blooms this year, though.
Too bad you can't ask your neighbors to put out the extra bag of yard waste for you...

    1. That's the good thing about Christmas cacti -- you can always root a new one from a cutting. Rhipsalis is the same way. Oh, that's good thinking about the yard waste! Mrs. Kravitz might do it for me.

  19. I just back up my blog manually copying one month at a time into a word document. Takes me about two or three minutes a month to do so but it allows me to keep all the pictures intact with the post that way. I'm not too certain a zip file will preserve that sort of information. Perhaps.

I'm actually watching Game of Thrones right now for the second time with my eldest daughter. I just started season four. I think the final season was a bit tedious since it was mostly about battles but overall, I really enjoyed the show.

    1. In the ZIP file, each photo comes with an additional document that tells where it goes in the blog. How this would all come together if reloaded onto another platform I'm not sure. I used to save webpage files of every week but I stopped doing that. Too much trouble!

  20. I do so hate the time changes although I would rather stay on Standard time than DST. It's healthier for our bodies! So, that will mean that Congress, if they do anything, will choose DST to be permanent. I've never watched Game of Thrones since my tastes run more to mysteries, detective series and the Great British Bake Off. The tree trimmers didn't take the yard debris with them? Here that's part of the price we pay for any trimming.

    ReplyDelete

    1. They took most of the debris, yes, but there's always little stuff left lying around -- twigs and sticks and leaves.

The Halloween Cactuses (Cacti?) are looking lovely. Bailey probably thought she was helping by moving sticks for you.

  26. There are service such as ‘blog to book, which allow you to download your blog in book format. It’s pricey to have them printed and bound but a pdf version is cheap as chips avd is a nice record as well as a back up of sorts.
