High Winds and Cough Syrup

Glistening inkcap (Coprinellus micaceus) at the cemetery

The weather freshened up yesterday, with clear skies, cool temperatures and lots of wind. I got out in the garden early in the morning with my metal detector, trying to find a piece of the bird feeders that got knocked off by the tree crew. I was afraid it had been swept up and carried off with all of the tree debris, but eventually I found it and reattached it to the feeder. What a bizarre task!

I also got a mysteriously strong reading in one of the flower beds and decided to dig there. A coin? Jewelry? No -- it was one of our missing copper slug rings. Somehow it had become buried and forgotten. It's now back in the shed with its slug-deterring companions.

I haven't used that metal detector in years but I must admit it was kind of fun to scan the ground and see what's what. I also found a weird strip of aluminum, and I got countless readings for iron -- no doubt old nails and screws. Our garden is full of construction debris. (I didn't bother trying to dig any of them up.)

In the afternoon I took a walk with Bailey to the cemetery. I was trying to capture the autumnal foliage in the photo above but somehow it doesn't look very bright. It seemed more yellowy in real life.

On the far side of the cemetery, an automated voice rang out from the driveway of a house as we passed: "Hi. You are being recorded." I instinctively responded, "Oh, f*ck off!" I mean, I wasn't in their driveway or tampering with their cars -- I was on the public sidewalk! Sure enough there was a camera attached to the corner of the roof. I don't mind being recorded, but I've never seen CCTV that comes with a vocal warning, clearly meant to intimidate passers-by. It annoyed me.

I also saw a woman wearing a hoodie that said on the back, in big letters, "THAT'S A AWFUL LOT OF COUGH SYRUP." I wondered what on earth it could possibly mean. It sounded like some kind of drug reference -- like, can you make recreational drugs from cough syrup? Turns out it's a brand of clothing owned by an LA rapper.

Bailey, as usual, was on red-alert for squirrels and straining at her lead. She's off this morning to the vet -- we're going to try spaying once again. Fingers crossed this fifth attempt will do the trick.

Here's a video to give you a sense of how windy it was yesterday. From inside the house I watched our poor avocado cope with the gusts, which were said to be up to about 40 mph. For a plant that lived its early years entirely indoors, it did well!

  1. We've had a stormy weekend with disruptions on rail traffic and motorways because of fallen trees etc., and in an area further south from where I live, tens of thousands were without electricity because metal roof had been blown into a transformator station. Thankfully, no damage in my immediate surroundings.

    Fingers crossed for Bailey's operation!

I've never held a metal detector in my hands, but it sounds like fun. Who knows what else is buried in your garden!

    1. The detecting itself is kind of fun, but it's not easy to find a place to do it -- you can't detect on many public lands, and you have to get permission (obviously) on private land. I'm also not a huge fan of the digging!

  2. That is some wind! The avocado and the tree fern have gotten huge!

  3. I have encountered one of those CCTV devices with an automated voice warning too. It startled me and made me jump. Bloody annoying when you are not doing anything wrong.
P.S. Doesn't that odd word that you wrote with an asterisk in the middle actually have a "u" there?

    1. Bloody annoying is right. I hate the implication that I am somehow in the wrong.

  4. Getting a metal detector has always been something that interests me. But I temper it with knowing that I would inevitably dig up old things to bring back home and display somewhere where I have no room for such. Perhaps the items are best left where they are? For now, I have resisted the temptation.

    1. Fortunately (?) I haven't had to struggle with what to do with my found items -- it's all been trash!

  5. Nice fungi shot..with the camera?
The avocado is doing well. If nothing else all that movement should stimulate root growth

    1. Actually, that's a phone photo! Yeah, I think wind does strengthen the plants.

  6. The Avocado tree in the video reminded me of Triffids waving at the window. Bailey is beautifully sleek and slim hope everything goes well today for her.

    1. And it was tapping on the window, just as a triffid might!

  7. Whoever has that camera and the voice warning is clearly paranoid.

  8. One of our neighbors, I think a new owner, installed one of those shouty camera things. It shouted at me when I was well over 25 feet from their fence. I was about to complain to management and have them disable the surveillance, when they did it themselves. I expect they got fed up of hearing it every time the slightest movement happened.

Let's hope fifth time is lucky for the long postponed spay.

    1. Well, 25 feet from the fence is ridiculous. Your neighbors clearly have to re-set it so that it's covering the proper area. Yeah, you'd think it would be just as annoying to people inside the house as out!

  9. Well yes, cough juice, the added codeine version, now long out of circulation here, was the go-to drug in my teenage years, not that I ever partook, more the stuff for grannies and bored housewives, we thought.
Bailey looks gorgeous in your picture and fingers crossed, her procedure is finally happening.

    1. Supposedly the brand is named after a remark from a cop who stopped the owner when he was coming home from the pharmacy. No word on what he intended to DO with the cough syrup! I doubt it had codeine in it, though. :)

  10. Hope Bailey has had her procedure and all went well.
Oh, and I checked by Christmas cactus yesterday and I DO have buds growing! Yay!

  12. We have wind like that all the time in S. Colorado!

    1. Also alien country for an avocado tree, I'm guessing!

  13. We had wind like that last week. It rattled my windows and made the palm trees sway. I've never seen a crop of mushrooms that looked like that before. Fascinating.

    1. I've seen these mushrooms elsewhere in the cemetery, but never in such a nicely formed clump.

  14. Those are some pretty strong gusts! Strong avocado tree, too.
I'll tell you what arouses my ire- those stupid signs that people put up that say, "Smile, you're on camera!" Nothing makes me want to raise two middle fingers more. Well, except for certain political bumper stickers.
I just showed Glen the picture of Bailey. He said, "I LIKE that dog."

    1. Yeah, those signs serve the same purpose -- to put YOU on the defensive. Which is baloney. We ought to be able to walk down the street without being made to feel like we're doing something wrong.

  15. There is a lot of flock camera controversy where I live. One locality is taking them down, but who knows if they'll replace the cameras with something else that is similar. I would be annoyed too with the voice. There is a house near me that has a sign that says "Smile, you are on camera", and it irritates me to no end.

    1. I've heard about the Flock controversy. I don't mind cameras that routinely film people on the street -- they're all over the place in London, often used by police -- but I don't want them to talk to me!

  16. The small group of hilly mushrooms is unusual. I see lots of mushrooms walking in the woodlands but never hilly mushrooms.
Your avocado tree is very healthy to withstand the high winds. Nice video, it shows the tree swaying and not one break.
One neighbor has installed cameras on his 4-acre property. I know he's recording 24/7. He's the paranoid, secretive, thinks he's stealthy type. He'll likely not install speaking cameras because it is all about the secret. That said, I know at least two cameras are recording images (from a distance) of my property. I choose to let crazy be. Beyond wildlife wondering, there's nothing much going on.
Fingers crossed for Bailey! It would be nice to get the surgery done and over.

    1. Yeah, the avocado came through it all just fine. Maybe your neighbor is filming wildlife, like I do in the garden?

  17. We had wind like that when the cold front moved in last week. Blew over three of my big plumerias. Happens everytime we get big wind now that they've gotten so big.

I hope you gave the camera a middle finger when you told it to fuck off.

  18. I think I would be nervous inside with all that glass & trees whipping around - but I would also stay right there to see what happened. Ha!

    1. Well, the windows are double-paned and the winds weren't hurricane force -- so not enough to break them. I wasn't worried about myself but I was worried for the plants!

  19. Oh gosh, I have my fingers firmly crossed that Bailey finally gets her op.

  21. I didn't realize inkcaps grew in clusters like that. I guess there are different varieties.

    1. Yeah, some of them are solitary. There's a gray-blue kind that grows more on its own -- at least the ones I've seen.

  22. Did you watch The Detectorists? I loved that show, quirky though it was. I won't let John watch it because it could become a new passion. I hope Bailey gets spayed finally! I would say the a similar thing to the intrusive camera. How annoying!

    1. Yes, we watched that -- in fact it inspired me to get the detector! So yeah, it is contagious. LOL

  24. It may be thirty years ago when at an open air market, we walked past a very flash car and an automatic voice told us to move away from the car. I forget the exact words of warning. I told a Thai friend about the incident and he said if that happened in Thailand, the car would immediately be vandalised.
    Good luck again with Bailey.

    1. Yeah, I've seen those alarms here too. Same thing -- making people feel like they're doing something wrong when they're just walking past.

  25. Having trees pruned is always upsetting. Our neighbor does our maple, and he's getting more aggressive on his side of the tree, so his lawn gets more sun. We can't see it from our house, so I've decided to just not look there.

  26. The avocado is standing the wind very well. I had a look at the cough syrup clothing and there is no way I would wear any of that! It's already Tuesday here (4.19pm)so hopefully Bailey is recovering now from her spaying.

Yes, Bailey is now on the mend!
