Walking, Plants and the Death Penalty
Lots of walking yesterday! I was feeling a bit sedentary after sitting around all day Wednesday, so while Bailey went on her dog walk with Josh, I went out on my own and listened to my podcast. It seems a little silly to pay someone to walk the dog when I'm going to be walking too, but I can't really have AirPods in my ears and walk the dog at the same time. I took my old route down toward school, as if I was walking to work, and it felt good to get my blood moving.
On the way back I found a tall IKEA barstool set out with the trash, and I grabbed it thinking it might make a good plant stand. I brought it home and cleaned it up, and indeed it will work to hold a plant somewhere. I'm always in search of things to elevate plants nearer to windows, particularly in the winter when there's so little light.
I brought the rubber trees inside for the winter and elevated the Thanksgiving/Christmas cacti into a place where they'll get better light and visibility. They're already forming buds, so we should have flowers soon!
I also began Anne Hull's memoir about growing up in Central Florida, "Through the Groves." I am loving this book so far. It describes life in rural Florida in pretty much the same years that I was a child there, and though I was several counties away from Hull (who was living in Sebring at the time) our experiences were not dissimilar.
Then, in the afternoon, I took Bailey for a long walk around the Thameslink station (above) and up into Cricklewood. I think we both enjoyed stretching our legs on such a bright, sunny day.
I've been in touch with the charity where we adopted Bailey to get a referral for a trainer. The woman who runs the charity told me that Bailey came to them after she was dropped off at a vet's office in Hendon, just north of us, by someone who said they found her. I think it's funny that she's practically back in her old neighborhood -- Hendon is very close by.
Found this on our walk through Cricklewood. What woman could resist such a heartfelt, carefully composed proposal?
A couple of news articles have rankled me in recent days.
First, there was President Trump, saying: "I could have done very bad things to Hillary Clinton. I could have done very, very bad things to Joe Biden. I could have done very bad things to Barack Hussein Obama. I thought it was inappropriate to do so because you have to treat the office of the presidency with respect...I view the presidency as a very sacred position, a very sacred position, very important, very sacred, a position where it has to be treated properly...You can’t treat the presidency with disrespect. And again, I’ve had my shot and still do at Biden, at Hillary Clinton and Barack Hussein Obama, and I’ve had plenty of people say, ‘Let’s go get ’em,’ and I said, ‘No, you can’t do that to the presidency.’”
And what all that blather really means is, "I got nuthin'."
Second, there's the attempted execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee. All executions are appalling in a supposedly civilized society, but Pike's was especially so -- and if there's a better argument for the barbaric nature of the death penalty, I'm not sure what it is. All the authorities have managed to do is torture and gravely injure her, perhaps permanently. And yes, I know Pike tortured and killed her own victim back in 1995, but as the famous saying goes, two wrongs don't make a right. Trump and his followers have shown a special bloodthirst for the death penalty, now pledging to execute a mass shooter in Texas by firing squad while live-streaming the event for all to see. What could possibly be the public purpose of such a display, and who would watch it? This isn't justice. It's death as a public spectacle -- and it turns my stomach.

Well, Hegseth wants to build his 21st-century gladiators. Soon there’ll be Trump Colosseum in DC where he’ll be able to host fights to the death and feeding victims to lions. His new bit will be the “thumbs down” instead of “you’re fired.”
ReplyDeleteHegseth also thinks of himself as a modern day Crusader.
DeleteThat's what they'll build in place of the Kennedy Center. 🙄
DeleteIt does all sound a little barbaric.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, I'm ashamed of my homeland's government.
DeleteI bet it was that moron Hegseth who came up with the idea of live-streaming the public execution of Nidal Hasan . I wonder if there will be ads and popcorn too? No doubt it will help to boost gun sales even further... "brought to you by Trump TV - the home of truth and justice". "Now let's see a slow motion replay...". Truly sickening!
ReplyDeleteOf course it was Hegseth. That man is a stone-cold war criminal. Sickening is the right word.
DeleteBack to Medieval Times, only with internet.
ReplyDeleteWeirdly, the Internet seems to be MAKING us medieval!
DeleteThe sport of killing with a real live victim. Could it be a show for the MAGA crowd? Despicable.
ReplyDeleteBailey to have some discipline? that will be fascinating, clickers and treats here she comes ;}
Well, she has SOME discipline. We're not letting her run roughshod over everything, despite appearances to the contrary!
DeleteIt seems that there are those who would enjoy seeing a public execution as years ago these were quite the social event. And what about those witnesses to current executions. Do family members really have resolution? The whole idea is sickening to me.
ReplyDeleteI kind of get it in the days when there was nothing else. If you lived in a small town in the middle of nowhere and someone was being hanged that day, going to see it might make sense. But not nowadays, when there's so much more positive entertainment available.
DeleteHaving walks with and without Bailey makes sense...you can concentrate on different things...plys you're going to be really fit and healthy!!
ReplyDeleteThat bar stool idea..brilliant!
Public murder by any name is not good. It is almost celebrating killing.
The initial act was not good either, but no need to bring society down to that level.
And there seems to be no interest in investigating the "Strange Fruit" that is appearing ...
That's exactly how I feel -- the death penalty diminishes all of us, turns the whole society into murderers.
DeleteSteve, it turns my stomach too. I have always been against the death penalty for the reasons you mentioned. My students and I used to have some great discussions about the death penalty when we were studying the US Constitution. And I cannot imagine for the world who in hell would want to watch that. We are living in such unbelievable times.
ReplyDeleteWe really are. I just can't believe this is my country.
DeleteThe very idea of them livestreaming an execution turns my blood cold, Steve. This is no longer America. Things just get worse, and worse, and worse. There seems to be no bottom and I fear what's going to go down in the next few months.
ReplyDeleteWhen the Democrats win the midterms, Trump is going to go scorched earth.
DeleteI hadn't heard about that latest rant from Trump, but he really is dragging America down with each and every passing day. The sad thing is all Americans get tarred with the same brush as him when they travel the world, the most oft repeated phrase being 'I didn't vote for him', well enough people did or turned a blind eye to the vote rigging.
ReplyDeleteI suspect most Trump voters seldom leave the country. International travelers are much more likely to be Democrats, I'm betting.
DeleteFunny thing, I pulled up your page in Feedly and it had the first picture and then the quote made by Trump though it left out the first part saying who was saying it so it sounded like you were saying it. I read it twice and was like, "huh?" I finally just came to your blog page and saw all the rest that Feedly left out. I've never had that happen before but it made me think about what I really knew about you Steve!
ReplyDeleteI've long been opposed to all forms of the death penalty, from hardened criminals to infants in the womb. We obviously can't carry it out with any form of humanity reliably and we keep doing it to those who are completely innocent as evidenced by the huge industry around getting people off of death row. I struggle with how we can consider ourselves civilized when we kill those we deem unworthy of living.
I think I hit "publish" too early, when I'd only uploaded the picture and the quote, before I wrote the post! It didn't stay that way for long.
DeleteAbortion is different, I think. A fetus is not yet sentient. To my mind it's basically an extension of the mother's body until it's born. (But of course I realize not everyone agrees with me on that.)
I am with you on the death penalty. I remember what Matthew Shepard's father Dennis said when asking the judge to take the death penalty off the table for Aaron McKinney:
ReplyDelete“You won’t be a symbol. No years of publicity, no chance of commutation, no nothing—just a miserable future and a miserable end. It works for me …. Mr. McKinney, I give you life in the memory of one who no longer lives. May you have a long life, and may you thank Matthew every day for it.”
I am always so impressed with people who have been through horrible crimes and find it in their hearts to forgive.
DeleteThe book looks interesting, I started spending at least part of the year in central Florida in 1972, it will be interesting to read about her experiences. I didn't realize what a racist place it was, until I move away.
ReplyDeleteOh, it was the Jim Crow South, for sure.
DeleteI agree so much that there shouldn't be a death penalty anywhere. In most of the states it was abolished years ago. But Texas, don't get me started!
ReplyDeleteDid you find a trainer? That will be interesting. Good thing you waited to retire before getting Bailey. She's a full-time dog.
Actually, 27 states still have the death penalty -- more than half. In four of those there's a moratorium, but in the others it can still be applied.
DeleteOh, and I'm still working on the trainer!
DeleteI remember our collective outrage over public executions carried out by ISIS and the Taliban. It was barbaric and an indication of their depravity. Yet here we are. Evidently the testosterone levels of barbarians are acceptable to Hegseth. Men over 30 in the military fill out a questionnaire now. One of the questions is weather or not they wKe up with erections. I have never seen a party so preoccupied with genitals.
ReplyDeleteThis testosterone obsession is very bizarre -- one of the weirdest things about Hegseth. (And that's saying something.)
Delete*whether
ReplyDeleteFlorida has been fast-tracking death sentence executions this year. DeSatan wants to tidy-up death row, I guess. The cruelty and barbarism of the death penalty is indefensible and the idea of live-streaming death by firing squad is...well, I'd say unthinkable but this administration has an enormous talent for thinking of just such things. What's your worst nightmare? Oh. Hold on. We'll dial it up for you. Make it real.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of that book. I should read it.
You're right about the administration enacting policies that embody many people's worst nightmares. It's their way of "owning the libs," even though they're antagonizing a lot of middle-of-the-road people too. I think you would love this book.
DeleteThis administration sinks lower and lower. Shocking and barbaric and despicable and all of the other adjectives that describe horrible events. When will they be gone?
ReplyDeleteWe've got to hang on a couple more years, unbelievably! But a Democratic Congress would go a long way toward reining in Trump.
DeleteThat livestreaming thing almost kicked me over the edge. The same with Christa Pike. This country is such a mess. I don't know if you read the IMGM substack "I F***ing Love Australia," but he is daily taking on the administration better (and with what appears to be very accurate data) than most American sources. I hope you found a trainer. And that book sounds like a good one.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen that substack. I'll have to watch for it.
DeleteI'll email you the url and a sample post. I get the free ones in my mailbox every day!
DeleteTrump treating the presidency with respect? What a fucking joke. And that Hegseth, what a disgusting excuse for a human being. And let's not forget Trump telling Iran to bomb San Diego and Los Angeles. This administration has descended into barbarism.
ReplyDeleteA joke, indeed -- to hear Trump preaching respect for the office is vomit-inducing.
DeleteI Enjoy The Dog Walking Stories - Lets Live Stream That
ReplyDeleteCheers
I agree! 😆😆
DeleteYes, to everything you have said!
ReplyDeleteWhat used to be unimaginable, is our new reality. It is a horrific reality that nobody would expect but here we are. Hopefully future elections will eliminate the problem(s); until then the nightmare continues.
Your solo walk sounds restorative. I think "me" time is important.
I really hope these midterms help rein in the White House and the worst impulses of its occupants.
DeleteI agree with you, Steve. I'm anti-death penalty to start with and then to make a spectacle of it? It turns my stomach. On a positive note, I love it when you re-purpose things. It gives me hope.
ReplyDeleteThey say it's to remind people that there are harsh penalties for such crimes. Like people don't know that?!
DeleteAll of this blog points to the need to GET OUT AND VOTE 🗳 BLUE! That's how WE will change most everything you are crying about! They are ruling with fear and you have to stop buying into that fear ... we are so damned close to the mid-term election now and it requires all of us to get out and VOTE!
ReplyDeleteAnd, finally ... I am glad you are actually looking for a trainer for Bailey!
Well, as you know, I've voted -- so I agree!
DeleteThose who will watch the live stream are blood thirsty individuals who delight in pain inflicted on others. And then there are the curious, who know no better, and often end up traumatized by what they see.
ReplyDeleteI just can't believe that people don't realize that what they watch will stay with them forever.
DeleteRemember how shocked we were st the brutal public executions by ISIS and the Taliban. We saw it as proof that they were inhuman barbarians. And yet, here we are. Here we are. I am sick.
ReplyDeleteYou visited and commented twice! You must REALLY agree with me. 😆😆
DeleteI absolutely agree about the death penalty - barbaric! Also, just from a fiscal perspective, it's more expensive to have the death penalty than life in prison. But, as we know, the "fiscal conservative" folks don't actually care about such things.
ReplyDeleteRepublicans preach about government waste and then inevitably wind up spending more than Democrats!
DeleteI couldn't agree more about the death penalty events. The whole thing is barbaric but the firing squad deal seems....is there a descriptor worse than 'barbaric'? But, I guess if they can round up immigrants, store them in warehouses without due process and send them to countries they know nothing about, they can do anything. We have a government based on cruelty. It's frightening.
ReplyDeletep.s. I'd advise that "grl" to run for the hills.
How about "disgusting"? That works too.
DeleteYeah, I wonder what the girl's response was. LOL
Ya know it wasn't all that long ago that the United States was denouncing terrorist organizations for videoing executions, and now here we are doing the same thing. The hypocrisy of the trump "administration" is literally appalling. Regarding the livestream of the firing squad, hell, I'm surprised that ghoul Hegseth isn't making it Pay per View. We are now a terrorist nation.
ReplyDeleteVance says he's not sure it will really happen. I hope there are people within the administration fighting Hegseth on this.
DeleteThe death penalty thing is a new low !
ReplyDeleteIt really is!
DeleteI'm struggling to stay sane these days. On the positive side, I've done a lot of escape reading! Did you ever get around to Trust by Hernan Diaz? I recently read his latest novel (I reviewed it while you were in FL) and it was totally different.
ReplyDeleteMy initial response was going to be that I didn't read "Trust," but now -- consulting my book list -- I see that I did. Yeesh! And I couldn't tell you a thing about it now!
DeleteThat man is deranged.
ReplyDeleteWhich man? There are so many fitting that description!
DeleteThere are so many ways to effectively kill someone instantly. Why the farce with electrocuting people and watch them smoke away and combust, or with non effective drugs? If the state must murder people, at least do it humanely.
ReplyDeleteThere is no humane way to murder another person.
DeleteTrump's threats to previous presidents is creepy and dangerous. When will this president be controlled by the powers that are there for such a purpose?
ReplyDeleteThat's the great mystery in all of this -- why so few people will stand up to him. No one wants to incur the wrath of the MAGAts.
DeleteExecutions and now Hegseth and the felon's desire to live stream an execution by firing squad sickens me. I would never watch such a thing.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
If I were Nidal Hasan's attorneys, I'd be seeking an injunction to prevent it on cruel and unusual grounds.
DeleteIt seems Bailey was an abandoned girl then? Shame on them! I have been looking out for abandoned bar stools too, or even just one, but there just aren't any around here. I'm going to have to buy one to put my pot plant on.
ReplyDeleteI think this "barstool" may actually be a high chair of sorts -- it looks like it's sized for kids, but it doesn't have bars or a table in front. Just a solid piece of plastic.
Delete
