Biometric
Well, Dave and I got our biometric appointment out of the way. We took the tube down to Clerkenwell late yesterday morning and got there about half an hour early -- because in addition to being fearful of forgetting some crucial document, I was also fearful of being late. We had coffee at a Costa caddy-corner to this ornate pub. Don't you love those caryatids on the top floor, and all the other sculptural elements? I think the whole place is closed and undergoing some sort of renovation. There's actually a workman standing in the middle floor's center windows, working on the window frame.
At the appointed time we went to the immigration processing center, and stood in a line, and then stood in another line, and then went to a counter where we handed our passports to a guy who scanned every page. Then we went to a machine that took our picture and our fingerprints. And then we were done. I thought I was supposed to submit all the paper documents that went with our application and I brought them with me but they didn't ask for those at all -- I guess the scans I'd sent them earlier were sufficient.
And now we wait.
After the appointment, we wanted to have some kind of special lunch, so we wandered through scenic Charterhouse Square and found a little French restaurant called Le Cafe du Marche. It was perfect. We wanted to sit outside because the weather was glorious, but alas, there was only one outside table and it was reserved. But indoors was nice too, and I had a blue-potato-and-broccoli salad and John Dory with vegetables, and a bright orange Aperol spritz. (OK, two Aperol spritzes.) Dave had a seafood soup and coquelet, or spring chicken.
Before any of that happened, I sat with the dog in the garden, reading. Above you'll see some of her antics in a condensed version of our morning.
Back to work today!

Sounds like a wonderful day. I'm glad the appointment went smoothly.
ReplyDeleteDave said, "We should take a personal day every week!" LOL
DeleteIt must be nice being paid to be a librarian and a music teacher when you are having a fancy lunch in a French restaurant. Cruella will be wielding her whip today..."Work Reed! Work!"
ReplyDeleteHey, it was for a legitimate bureaucratic purpose! And it gives us more security as employees in the long run, so the school benefits.
DeleteThat building deserves to be cared for and live!
ReplyDeleteA good day for all. Lovely to see Olga enjoying herself
Yeah, I'm glad the building is getting what looks like a respectful revamp.
DeleteI'm sure you're relieved to have the biometric appointment out of the way. Such things shouldn't evoke anxiety, but they do. Lunch sounded celebratory.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely to see Olga disporting herself in the sun.
I wasn't anxious about the content of the appointment but I was afraid I'd forget some crucial piece of documentation!
DeleteOlga is looking spry, the warmer days are good for her.
ReplyDeleteShe definitely seems happier in the warmth and sunshine.
DeleteExciting progress! That building is a beauty, and so is Olga. I loved her “chasing” her toy. I’m going. I’m going. Don’t rush me. The first noises she made as she rolled around sounded like a person imitating a dog.
ReplyDeleteShe still WANTS to chase it, but her body is like, "No way!"
DeleteSounds like a well-handled appointment capped off with a delicious and well-deserved lunch—fingers crossed for smooth processing ahead!
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed!
DeleteSometimes I think Olga has more fun than anyone! Congratulations to you both on getting through the final part of your citizenship. (The term biometric threw me off! I don't know what I was thinking of but it wasn't that!) I checked out that restaurant and it looks charming and delicious too -- a perfect spot to celebrate. I know all will be well and I hope you hear about it soon.
ReplyDeleteYeah, "biometric" sounds more sinister than it actually is. It's just taking physical details for identification purposes.
DeleteLunch sounds wonderful, especially a couple of Aperol Spritzes ... it's the perfect time of year for those!
ReplyDeleteIt really did taste good at that moment! (Hence the second one!)
DeleteAlthough uneventful days are hard to blog about, I sure do like having them!
ReplyDeleteWell, it was eventful in some ways, but I think we DO have to find enjoyment in simple tasks. That's the key to happiness.
DeleteQuite a red letter day your family. Will your british friends throw welcoming parties? Our American ones did when we got our citizenship.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good question! No one has offered to yet! I don't really like parties being thrown for me so I'd be fine if they didn't.
DeleteCongratulations! Soon you will be as British as a Beatle! Did the camera make those little beeping noises when it took your pictures? Sounds like you and Dave celebrated perfectly indeed. I had to look up a John Dory. I had no idea! Was it good?
ReplyDeleteOlga walks like I do.
No, the camera did NOT beep, which was very confusing. We pushed a button and waited and waited, and it did nothing obvious, and we couldn't look down at the screen to see what was happening because then it might take our picture when we were looking down. It's a good thing there were two of us so one could tell the other when the task was complete.
DeleteA good way to mark a special day. Hope you don't have to wait too long now.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed! They said up to six months, but I'm hoping our application will be easy since we're gainfully employed and have already been here so long.
DeleteBest 59 Seconds On The W W dot Interwebbie
ReplyDeleteWell Done ,
Cheers
I knew you'd like that! LOL
DeleteCongratulations, hopefully processing will not take too long now.
ReplyDeleteHopefully not!
DeleteWell done on the Biometric meeting and a lovely celebratory meal. It sounds like a perfect day.
ReplyDeleteOlga is loving the sunshine and warmth. She's one happy girl.
She loves being outside on the grass more than anything.
DeleteCharterhouse Square is where "Hercule Poirot" lives. I searched out that Art Deco building years ago. It's a pretty place to explore. I love that pub too. There are so many great buildings like that in London.
ReplyDeleteInteresting Biometric meeting. I wonder how long it will take.
Olga looks like she was enjoying the sunshine in the garden.
Yes, Florin Court! I know that building and have photographed it a couple of times. It's a very scenic area.
DeleteThat was the best 59 seconds of my day so far! Is that the top part of an old Kong?
ReplyDeleteHa! I love that you can correctly identify that hunk of rubber. LOL
DeleteOlga has the best life! Old girl- lucked out when she found you guys!
ReplyDeleteShe has done pretty well, if I do say so myself.
DeleteI often learn new words when I read your posts, Steve. Today I had to look up caryatids and John Dory. I was ready to look up coquelet but, luckily, you explained it. ;)
ReplyDeleteWe had to look up coquelet ourselves -- and Dave went to a French cooking school!
DeleteIt sounds like a wonderful day! Congratulations on your mastery of all the paperwork. I'm dealing a lot with bureaucracy right now too and am never quite sure of what's required. I had to look up caryatid and aperol spritzer. I figured John Dory was a type of fish because of Finding Nemo. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know if Aperol is a thing in the states the way it is here. It's very popular as a summer drink.
DeleteOlga's YouTube Diary, April 30, 2025 . . . It was another perfect day. I rolled in the new grass and rubbed it all over my face. I told my human to put down the camera but he didn't obey; I shall consider enrolling him in obedience school. But I was feeling happy and generous, so it didn't matter. I chased the little red ball with the holes in it. I wagged and wagged my tail. Springtime is the best! Don't forget to Subscribe and hit the Like button!
ReplyDeleteHa! Someone suggested years ago I should develop a YouTube channel for Olga. The time is probably past now, but she could have been a star! Instead she just has my blog. :)
DeleteI'm glad your biometricing (my word) was a painless experience.
ReplyDeleteI like that Olga was in no great hurry to retrieve the toy. She is smart and knows it won't move away of its own accord.
Sometimes she doesn't even bother to retrieve it. I throw it and she just barks at it.
DeleteOlga seems to be lumbering a bit more than usual. Or is that just her way of asserting who's the boss?
ReplyDeleteNo, she's definitely lumbering these days!
DeleteSounds like a charmed day. For Olga too.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't take much to make Olga happy.
DeleteOlga is living the best life. What a great video (the bluebells and bee are nice too). Congratulations on checking off the biometric appointment.
ReplyDeleteChris from Boise
I'm always happy to see bees around the flowers! They love that comfrey and the green alkanet, as well as the bluebells.
DeleteWhen Olga smiles she looks so much like my Georgie that it tugs on my heartstrings! What a sweet girl. Does she like belly rubs when she rolls around on her back?
ReplyDeleteThe bluebells sure are pretty! The weather has been glorious here, too. I could sit outside all day.
Congratulations on getting one step closer to Brit citizenship. Your timing was excellent, since the earth here is being scorched.
