Transport
I'm going to start this post off with a shot of my dahlias, which are just starting to really pop. Who knows what they'll look like by the time we get back to London in a week! We watered them well yesterday and I put them in a shadier spot, in hopes that they won't dry out too much.
In fact, all of yesterday morning was taken up by preparations for our trip -- mostly plant watering and cleaning up the flat. With that all out of the way, we hit the road at 12:45. Rather than deal with the tube we decided to take a taxi straight from our door to Victoria Station for our 1:54 train, which worked fine despite horrendous traffic and the fact that I accidentally had the driver drop us a block away from the station entrance.
We got inside, bought our tickets from the truly bewildering array of options on the ticketing machines, and gave Olga some water before making our way to the train. Dave carried her partway through the station because she was moving so slowly. (Dave is giving grumpy face in that photo because he hates having his picture taken.)
On the train, Olga slept under our seats or in the aisle. It brought us to Pevensey Bay with no changes, which was fabulously easy, but once here our plans fell apart. I'd intended to catch the bus to our cottage, but we happened to arrive during a 1.5-hour gap in the No. 8 bus's schedule. We weren't about to stand at this absurd bus stop for an hour and a half:
I think one person might fit on that little concrete pad beside a very busy road, but not two people, a dog and a bunch of luggage.
So we called an Uber, and voila, problem solved!
Olga seems happy to be here, lying in the sun beneath the gaze of Poseidon. She was exhausted last night, though, and after eating fell into a deep sleep.
We ordered pizza and I made a rather strange, accidentally vermouth-heavy martini. I could have sworn there were martini glasses here, but I couldn't find any, so I had to serve it in a wine glass (NO, I didn't fill it up!) and because my gin was lukewarm I put it over rocks. It wasn't ideal but it did the job.
This morning when I opened the sliding door to the deck, a very scruffy-looking fox darted off along one of the walls between our neighbors' patios. Even here, on this pebbly beach, we have critters!

Olga looks happy to be there.
ReplyDeleteShe's happy to be wherever we are!
DeletePoor Dave and his hatred of the paparazzi. Sounds like you worked out the travel hitches without too much trouble. The bus stop is a joke. Enjoy your time at the beautiful spot with Poseidon.
ReplyDeleteA joke and a hazard! I'm surprised the council allows it.
DeleteThat looks like a lovely spot for a break. Hope you have a relaxing break.
ReplyDeleteThanks! We like it here. This is our third time.
DeleteIt looks a perfect holiday and Olga is already enjoying it.
ReplyDeleteShe is indeed!
DeleteHope you have a great break. We had a beach house at Pevensey Bay for years. We loved holidaying there when our sons were boys. We used to spend Christmas there too. We moved from London 20 years ago down here to East Sussex on the coast but a bit further along from Pevensey as we had loved our holidays there so much. It looks like you are in for some good weather this coming week. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteOh, interesting that you had a place here! Are you east or west of Pevensey now?
DeleteWe are east of Pevensey, Bexhill - bit of a retirement town but it suits us as we are pretty ancient. Our sons always say some of our best holidays were at Pevensey Bay even better than Disneyworld! Sue
DeleteWell done upon making it to Pevensey Bay again - a little corner of paradise. I hope the three of you have a lovely holiday (American: vacation). Is there a monument to indicate where William the Conqueror and his forces landed in 1066?
ReplyDeleteP.S. Has that cat in the station ad just been licking Dave's bottom?
DeleteThere IS a monument at Pevensey castle! I don't know of a monument along the beach, but there could be one somewhere.
DeleteCarrying Olga can't be easy!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely holiday.
That was exactly what I thought! Go Dave!
DeleteYeah, she's not light, but she weighs less now than she used to. I think she's about 20 kg.
DeleteOlga looks truly happy and relieved to be beside the seaside after her journey!
ReplyDeleteWendy (Wales)
She's been here a couple of times so it must seem familiar to her, which would be comforting.
DeleteHave a wonderful vacation. I think it is so good that dogs can go on trains in England! I would love to take Shirley on an adventure.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to be able to transport her on the train! One of the things I love about this country.
DeleteI was surprised again to find Olga can ride the train. So cool. Have a good week, even roughing it with the wine glasses.
ReplyDeleteI know, life's hard, right?!
DeleteThat Pevensey beach looks lovely. My only question, why would you even bother taking a bus? Or are you worried about a taxi or an uber declining Olga? Hove a wonderful vacation!
ReplyDeleteIt can be hard to get a pet-friendly Uber or taxi. Uber now has a category called Uber Pet, and we thought we'd ordered one, but the guy who arrived was surprised by the dog. Fortunately he took us anyway. I like buses because they're cheaper so I often opt for those first, but I think in this case we'll probably take an Uber back too!
DeleteThat's a long haul for anyone with luggage and in heat and probably especially for Olga. It's nice to see Dave's photo -- I'm glad he agreed. Or at least didn't demand you not post it! I hope you all have a wonderful time there!
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't care what I post. He doesn't read my blog anyway. LOL
DeleteJust looking at the picture of Olga lounging happily with the sea behind her made me feel a little less stressed. Please enjoy for all of us.
ReplyDeleteShe is a vision of relaxation, isn't she?! LOL
DeleteThat looks just lovely! Mike & I are going on a mountain ramble today, but I know he'd rather be hanging out by the sea.
ReplyDeleteA mountain ramble will be fun too! I know you'll post pictures! :)
DeleteOlga looks happy. And the deck and the ocean beyond looks so peaceful. I can almost smell it.
ReplyDeleteSalt air!
DeleteI see why you chose this location to spend week. You have a great view of the sea.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the wall of the cabin is an accordion door, so the whole wall slides open to the water.
DeleteWhat a fantastic view you have! All that sunshine and an ocean view from a lovely deck, it looks like a nice vacation spot.
ReplyDeleteWhen I visit in August, I'm planning trips to Oxford and Cambridge and the one thing I'm dreading are those ticketing machines. I was hoping there would be at least one small, human-manned ticket booth.
I think they do have humans around in the major stations, but there's often a huge line to deal with them (because everyone struggles with the machines!). I don't understand why they don't make the ticket options simpler. Except that the confusion probably nets money for the rail lines.
DeleteThe ocean view from your deck is fabulous. Olga looks comfortable and happy to have completed the journey and now enjoy the holiday.
ReplyDeleteIsn't Uber a wonderful service! Efficient, convenient and reliable. Perfection.
It's hard to beat Uber, though sometimes we have trouble getting one. Especially with a dog.
DeleteWonderful view, hope the weather will keep up being great.
ReplyDeleteI think it gets rainier later in the week, but we'll deal with it.
DeleteOlga looks like she's ready for a nice holiday!
ReplyDeleteAnd that martine says you're ready, too!
Have a wonderful time/
We are both indeed ready!
DeleteHa! I bet you and Dave are an interesting couple to watch interact. (I'm with him about having photos taken) I'm glad to see that Olga looks so happy. If she's stressed, she's hiding it from the camera quite well. Enjoy the coming week!
ReplyDeleteI usually don't even try to take photos of Dave because he always pulls a face or makes himself look dour.
DeleteI put my comment on the blog on the previous. Anyway, did you take that dog bed with you? That's a lot to carry.
ReplyDeleteWe did bring it with us! We rolled it up and it wasn't too hard to transport that way.
DeleteOlga is smiling! Trips are hard on everyone but once arrived, they are generally a relaxing change of scenery.
ReplyDeleteYou just have to think that getting here is half the fun, whether that's actually true or not. LOL
DeleteGood to know you have arrived safely and soundly in spite of the heat, heavy traffic and the gap in the bus schedule! I am surprised you use ticket machines for your train tickets. I buy all train tickets online (no matter whether in Germany or in the UK); it's so convenient and you can easily compare options and prices.
ReplyDeletePoor scruffy fox! I feel sorry for him or her.
Enjoy your week away!
Yeah, we do that sometimes, but I didn't want to commit to a particular train. (I realize you can buy more open-ended tickets too.)
DeleteIt always tickles me how you can 'read' Olga's mood, even from a desk chair with an ocean between us! If she is happy, she smiles. If she is not happy, she doesn't!
ReplyDeleteShe is a very expressive dog, it's true!
DeleteI love her smile! Have a good time.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThat's such a nice photo of Olga with a great background.
ReplyDeleteShe loves the deck.
DeleteOlga, sweet Olga, always takes away from anything you write. She is a natural poser.
ReplyDeleteShe does steal the show, it's true!
