Round Rock and Wobbly Dog
Olga, who gets me up at 4:30 every morning in this house with no curtains, has just been out on the deck guarding against foxes. They're all around us at dawn -- I saw one posing on the garden wall a few houses down, and another running across our deck while Olga and I walked on the pebbly beach. Of course I didn't have my camera handy.
That's yesterday's sunrise in the photo above, which gave a pretty good indication what the day's weather would be like:
Despite the sunny skies I stayed inside for much of the morning, reading David Szalay's book "All That Man Is," which I am loving. I read his book "London and the South-East" a few years ago and loved that one too. He's really good at exploring the identities and compulsions of men, for better or worse.
When Dave woke up and started moving around (about 11 a.m.!) I went for a walk on the beach.
I found an almost perfectly spherical pebble. In fact at first I thought it was a musket ball or some similar piece of antiquated ammunition -- but no, just a rock.
I found numerous interesting rocks, in fact. And an empty wine bottle, with no note inside (sadly), which I brought back to the house and put in the trash.
We got good news yesterday afternoon -- the Home Office has approved our citizenship applications. Woo hoo! All we need to do now is attend a swearing-in ceremony, where we plead allegiance to King Charles III and his descendants, and get our citizenship certificates. And then we're done. We never have to worry about visas and biometric residence permits and all that junk ever again. And we can vote!
Of course we'll still be American citizens too. I wouldn't renounce that, as tormented as I am about the direction of American politics these days. As I've said before, we'll only be in trouble if the UK and USA get in a conflict with each other -- which despite Trump's bluster still seems unlikely.
Olga scared us to death yesterday evening. She was climbing down from the couch, which for her always involves a deep stretch, and I think she lost her grip on the smooth floor and stretched a bit too far. When she got her hind legs off the couch she couldn't stand up, and she flopped over and had what looked like a seizure. She went rigid and her eyes shifted rapidly from side to side. She was fine again in about 30 seconds, but I really thought she might be dying right in front of me. Maybe it was a momentary recurrence of her vestibular disease, or she simply got dizzy from all the blood rushing to her head when she over-stretched.
In any case, she seems OK now and as I write this, she saw a fox walk past and ran out onto the deck to challenge it.
See that brown moth on my chair? I found it in the kitchen, tucked into the seam between the refrigerator and freezer doors. Not a very good place for a moth. I captured it and brought it outside, where it sat on my chair for a while before fluttering away. Olga is fascinated by foxes but she couldn't muster any interest in a moth.

That's a beautiful view! I hope Olga continues to feel OK. Congratulations on the citizenship; I'm a little envious too. I don't think I've ever seen a rock that circular.
ReplyDeleteI wish I'd thought to move the barbecue grill out of the way, but yes, it is a beautiful view!
DeleteWhile I don't care for Martini, I would certainly enjoy that view. That is a long dining table you have there!
ReplyDeleteI should clarify -- I think many Europeans think of "martini" to mean straight Martini vermouth. But in the USA, a martini is a cocktail made with gin or vodka with just a touch of vermouth added, usually garnished with olives or a lemon twist. Is that what you're picturing, or the former?
DeleteBoth, Steve. My Mum loves Martini (the cocktail) and my sister quite likes it, too, so sometimes Mum prepares it for us as a sundowner when we visit her for a meal (or just the sundowner). I am much more an Apérol or Limoncello spritz person than a Martini person :-)
DeleteCongratulations on your citizenship achievement. I hope you have a smart suit to wear for your investiture. Must maintain standards now, old boy 😁
ReplyDeleteI haven't even thought of what I'm going to wear! Maybe I need a Union Jack tie?
DeleteHooray for citizenship! Glad to hear Olga is okay after that little scare.
ReplyDeleteShe seems fine now. I think it was just an episode.
DeleteHope that Olga will continue to be ok. Welcome to UK....knighthood next?
ReplyDeleteHa! Let's not get ahead of ourselves!
DeleteHello buddy
ReplyDeleteBig congrats on the citizenship news too!
A martini was the perfect way to end the day.
Thank you! And yes, a martini is always welcome. (I usually don't have one daily, but hey, it's vacation.)
DeleteOur animals give us heart-stopping moments. I'm glad Olga is okay.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your citizenship awards - it's nice to be part of the family.
Olga has been such a healthy dog overall that I am surprised by her episodes as a senior citizen.
DeleteWhat an idyllic holiday you are having and the spherical pebble was a great find! Congratulations on gaining British citizenship. Which accent will you adopt? May I humbly suggest Yorkshireish which is blunt and honest. At reasonable cost I could teach you over the telephone.
ReplyDeletePeople always seem surprised that I don't have a British accent even though we've lived here for years. But speech patterns form early and they don't easily change!
DeleteOh that view! I hope Olga stays well.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to congratulate you on your citizenship!
ReplyDeleteThank you, and thanks for the good wishes for Olga. Why do you have two Google accounts?!
DeleteI created one for just blogging. It serves no distinct purpose. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
DeleteCongratulations! You got the news in a perfect British spot.
ReplyDeleteYes, it was an ideal place to be!
DeleteHappy citizenship! And I'm glad Olga's okay again. That was weird turn she had.
ReplyDeleteThank you! And yes, it was weird. I think she basically got extremely dizzy.
DeleteI'd say apart from the Olga scare, your vacation is everything you could hope it would be. All that and excellent news on your citizenship! That makes me smile big! (Great rock hunting, too!)
ReplyDeleteIt has been an ideal trip so far in many ways!
DeleteI have to laugh at little, thinking of you pledging allegiance to King Charles. It's more interesting than pledging allegiance to a flag, though.
ReplyDeleteOld dogs do odd things, just as old people do. Sometimes it can be scary. Glad she's okay and feeling up to doing fox protection maneuvers.
It is weird to pledge allegiance to a king. Not something I ever thought I would do!
DeleteI keep telling myself that in a little over three years, this will all be just a chapter for historians to summarize and we can move onto criticisms of the next guy, hopefully much fewer and far between than this one.
ReplyDeleteYes, please, let's have a less controversial and more boring leader! I'm all for it!
DeleteYay on your good news! That was a scary moment with Olga. It kind of reminds me of how we are with Mike's dad - we watch him like a hawk, analyzing everything he does to see if he's declining (he's 93).
ReplyDeleteProbably very similar, yes. It's tiring having to stay so alert to every little thing.
DeleteNot At All A Fan Of Dog Scares - That Makes For The Worst 30 Seconds Or So - Dig The Collection For Sure - Love The Queen Capture There With Those Happy Little Back Legs As Well - Definitely Didn't See That Moth
ReplyDeleteHappy Vacation ,
Cheers
The moth blends in with the chair pretty well!
DeleteGlad Olga's okay and I love your martini view!
ReplyDeleteNot too shabby, eh?
DeleteEek. Olga's rapid eye movements sound very vestibular in nature. Glad she is okay. Poor old girl. I love the view you have from your beach house.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the eye thing was just like her vestibular attack. But after that she held her head at an angle for a while, and we're not seeing that now. She seems entirely fine.
DeleteThat last picture, no wonder you like that place so much and I love that that whole wall of glass opens up to the deck, not just doors. Congrats on your new citizenship status. Poor Olga. That would have scared me too.
ReplyDeleteThe open wall is a major plus! That's what drew us here in the first place.
DeleteCongratulations on your citizenship news. It did not take very long and soon you'll be pledging allegiance.
ReplyDeletePoor Olga. What a scare for you both. She's ok now and that's good to see.
It took a little more than two months, which is about what I expected.
DeleteFor some reason this must be good territory for foxes.
ReplyDeleteIt's strange to see foxes on the beach!
DeleteCongrats on the citizenship! I have to admit, I'm extremely jealous. I'd love to have the security of dual citizenship with the way things are going to hell over on this side of the pond.
ReplyDeleteYour martini view looks fabulous!
Well, the UK is facing some similar populist pressures, so who knows what will happen here. At least now I can vote against Nigel Farage!
DeleteIt costs serious money to renounce US citizenship these days.
ReplyDeleteDoes it?! I never imagined one would have to pay to renounce citizenship. But as I said I have no plans to do that anyway.
DeleteCongrats on the citizenship confirmation! Are Mr. & Mrs. Russia UK citizens?
ReplyDeleteAt first glance I thought that was a dung beetle dung ball in your hand. Glad Olga is okay now!
I'm not sure about Mr. and Mrs. R. I hope it's not a dung beetle ball! If so it's a fossilized one.
DeleteFirst of all Congratulations on the citizenship. That is a nice milestone. Sorry to hear about Olga's little episode but it sounds like she is okay now which is great. I love that round rock and the others in your collection look interesting. You are going to miss that view when go back to the city.
ReplyDeleteI will, but I miss our garden now. It will be good to get back to that.
DeleteCongratulations on the safety and security of being a UK citizen, and for the view too.
ReplyDeleteYes, it will be a huge plus to be citizens and not have to worry about documentation and all that.
DeleteCongratulations on your news!
ReplyDeletePossibly the overstretch did trigger something for Olga...but you all look to be having a nicely relaxed time there
We are indeed, and thank you!
DeleteSteve, congratulations on your dual citizenship. I am envious! I hope Olga's issue was a one time thing. The view with of the beach with the idea of a martini is heaven to me!
ReplyDeleteA beach and a martini are pretty hard to beat, I agree!
DeleteYAY you! of course I am delighted
ReplyDeleteAND jealous! Biscuits to ya!
When Dexter became an old man he started having seizures , not many but they were frightful! Full blown! Scary when that happens but I was advised to just take it easy and sooth the pooch afterward , maybe lay down with him until he felt his wits returning.
Love the shingle from the shore!! I bought home a basket full from Dungeness, great beach for stones. Your round stone is an amazing find- good luck charm , to be sure!
Thanks for passing on the advice re. the seizures. That's basically what we did -- all you can do, really.
DeleteCongratulations to you both. Which passport will you travel with? CBP has gone crazy, I'm sort of concerned about leaving the country at all.
ReplyDeleteI guess it depends on where we're going. If we're going to the USA I'll use that one. If we're going elsewhere in the world I may use the British.
DeleteGorgeous day with lovely views. Glad you are enjoying yourself, Steve! Hope Olga is all right.
ReplyDeleteShe seems fine today!
DeleteYour days feel like a rich, unpredictable tapestry
ReplyDeleteEVERYONE's days are a rich, unpredictable tapestry!
DeleteI'm with you - a musket ammunition for sure LOL
ReplyDeleteYou have the BEST VIEW!!!!
