Post-Equinox Brunch
Yesterday's sky was deep blue and so clear that Dave and I could watch a jet precisely flying in the contrails of another jet that had passed moments before, like Hansel and Gretel following their popcorn path through the forest. "You should just take a picture of this sky," he said. But of course I opted for shadows instead, the dark, clear-cut shadows of spring.
And I just realized we passed the equinox two days ago, so it is in fact spring now. Woo hoo!
We took ourselves out for brunch in the morning, right after Dave got his hair cut. In fact when I walked up to the cafe where I was meeting him, there was a random man sitting in my seat chatting away to Dave -- turns out it was his barber, who came out to sit with him between customers!
It felt great to sit outside and soak up the warmth of the sun and watch the passing parade of people, cars and buses. We are all emerging from our winter coccoons.
In the afternoon I re-potted a couple more plants. I was forced to kill a toadflax that had taken root in one of our lily pots. I'd meant to move it to its own pot but it had woven a net of roots so tightly around the lily bulbs that I couldn't extract them. I just pulled out the crown of the toadflax and repotted the whole root ball, figuring the roots would disintegrate on their own, leaving just the lilies. (Which have already started sprouting.)
I also cleaned the house, read blogs and got about 80 pages into "Flashlight," which is pretty interesting so far. And in the evening I made a martini and we watched "Bugonia," which is one of the weirder movies I've ever seen. It was good right up until it wasn't, toward the end, when it took a twist that neither of us could quite swallow. But it was entertaining, I'll give it that.

Con trails are rarely seen here, so I found it rather cool to see them in England. Of course in your birth country, there are conspiracy theories about them.
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice touch about the barber sitting to chat with Dave. That's an important clue in the crime fiction you're going to write, because it proves where they both were at the crucial time when there was a murder in the barber shop. On the other hand you do have a vested interest in exonerating Dave. I might have been reading too many murder mysteries lately.
ReplyDeleteYour food looks tasty, but I wouldn't want to eat so close to a road .
ReplyDeleteIt was definitely a day for contrails yesterday. I was telling P about all the conspiracy theories about them....mainly from Americans I think!! I like to look ( on FlightRadar24) at where those 34 thousand feet up planes are going to and from. ....and then, when you look at the map part of the app, they can be so far away. Often places that can be an hour's drive!
We are having lunches in our garden, it is so good to feel the sun on our faces.
ReplyDeleteDave's brunch looks good .. perhaps I would swap the ham for smoked salmon though 😋
ReplyDeleteYour omelette looks delicious but why wasn't Dave tucking into his brunch? Probably checking out turkishbarbers.com on his smartphone... Mehmet, Osman, Kamal - ooh! He can cut my hair any time!
ReplyDeleteClean warm air! Sunshine! Yes yes! Good food too! Shadows! Im eating it all in and hope to appreciate same in a few hours as it’s just first light here now.
ReplyDeleteWeren't you worried that the evil right were seeding the sky with chemicals to control your mind Steve? Hah! Your brunch meal looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteA nice moment in the sun, welcome to spring.
ReplyDeleteThat brunch looks fabulous! I would be jealous, but I just ate my own breakfast (fried egg on toast spread with Laughing Cow cheese).
ReplyDeleteNice to enjoy a meal outdoors. isn't it? Some of our favorite spots have great outdoor dining areas.
ReplyDeleteMy mind took your picture of the shadows and decided they were three witches, two in elaborate headdresses and apparent newbie.
Your brunch looks yummy. I was hoping to see Dave's nice haircut but you cut it out of the photo! ;)
ReplyDeleteI have a clump of daffodils blooming so I'm happy about that. The weather is so up and down here but it will get there eventually like every year...
Early spring sitting in the sun soaking it up, I always referred to it as doing my lizard thing. Is that a salad with your omelet?
ReplyDeleteI love your shadow shot! I see so many more contrails than I used to. Good thing I'm not into those conspiracy theories.
ReplyDeleteYour brunch dishes look so delicious. It makes me hungry for a full breakfast but no time today. I'm glad you had a beautiful day to enjoy. London with blue skies just can't be beat.
ReplyDeleteThe first photo is a stunner. I read your title as: Post-Apocalypse Brunch. It would surprise me... except for the brunch.
ReplyDeleteI love having breakfast or brunch out. I'm a huge fan of eggs of any type. We've had several spring-like days lately, giving us a taste of sun and 60 degrees. However, the rain will be coming back Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteBrunch in the spring sunshine sounds delicious.
ReplyDeleteToadflax gets everywhere, but I can't help admiring its tenacity.
Those shadows look like snowmen with very bad, punky hair! That brunch outdoors looks absolutely perfect. Great day, tasty looking food, good company.
ReplyDeleteCelebrating a sunny Spring Day with a sidewalk cafe brunch sounds marvelous. Your omelet looks outstanding. It is still too cold and wet for outdoor dining in MA. I can't wait for warmer weather.
