Scene: Produce department at Wegman's, Manalapan, New Jersey.
Me, pointing at cabbage: "Wow, look at that."
Dave: "That would make a good photo."
Me: "Yeah, it would!"
Dave: "So why don't you take it?"
Me: "I dunno. I might get in trouble."
Dave: "You've done it before."
Me: "Yeah, but then I had a smaller camera."
Dave: "Oh, go ahead."
So I did.
There's no copyright issue on a head of cabbage! Great shot. I can see a series of vegetables coming...

Ha! I wasn't worried about copyright -- some stores don't allow cameras and they get quite cranky if you pull one out. I think it has something to do with competitive concerns. Maybe Wegman's doesn't care, though.

Five plus years ago I was in a Wegman's in Princeton,NJ, with a visitor from a former Soviet country. She was astounded by the store and took out her tourist camera at the bakery. One of the store employees screamed at her - scaring her - to the effect she could not do that. It was horrific. Quite an uncalled for putdown in a very rude and unending angry tirade. Reminded me of when I was in East Berlin 40 some years ago and an East Berlin officer took my purse, opened it, and took out my camera. He was so stern, and I was so scared, thought I would never get back to the West. What an impression for a meek, kind, visitor to the USA from that Princeton Wegman's lady. I'll never forget that! You were lucky!

ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw your post, I though it said cribbage. Couldn't figure out for the life of me why there was a beautiful photograph of cabbage. Sigh...
