Blah

As I sit here with my coffee in the gray light of dawn, it's raining steadily outside. I don't think there's any nicer sound than an early morning rain, before the world wakes. I appreciate it all the more after our hot, dry summer.

Dave's sister Chris and her husband Gary leave this morning for Southampton and their cruise around Britain. Dave cooked for them last night -- fish en papillote and Eton mess -- and we watched the debut of the new season of "The Great British Bake-Off" so they could absorb some British television culture. (Is it a deliberately anti-Brexit statement that a French woman is participating in Bake-off this year? Hmmmm...)

I was just looking at the primary election results. Joe Arpaio is out in Arizona -- yay! And although I didn't vote for Andrew Gillum for Florida governor, it was really a toss-up in my mind between him and Gwen Graham, so I'm happy with his victory too. Onward to November!

  1. I like that sweatshirt - "Blah". I have sometimes thought of having a shirt made with "etc." on the front. Back in the seventies I had a T-shirt specially made with "T-shirt" printed on the front. For you I would suggest either "Sidewalk" or "Right?"

  2. Hooray for Arpaio being out! Onward to November, indeed.

  3. What is it about The Great British Bake Off?? I just love it. It looks so simple but the production values are stellar. It takes a lot of time to install all those faux kitchens and then haul them out when the bakers are eliminated one by one, and it takes a lot of editing to do the instructional voice over for each bake for the edification of the viewers, and then the close ups of all the bakes at the end of the counter.

Most of all I love the way the contestants are so sincere, and so painfully modest, and so very committed to the point of self-flagellating tears when their souffle drops or a gingerbread house is deemed "too Disney". And the very ultimate tippy-top BEST part is that there is nary a vocal fry in the lot.

The Great British Bake Off is like an ice cold gin martini (stirred, not shaken) for the eyes and ears. I love it.

Looking forward to a new season is what keeps my despair of the arrival of Winter at bay. Yes. I'm that shallow.

  4. It's huge news here that Gillum won. And I did vote for him but if Gwen Graham had gotten the Dem nomination I would have been okay with that. Still- it makes me feel good and hopeful that things can turn. It will truly be telling in November- the self-avowed left-leaning young African American man versus the white guy who has Trump's support and who is a big Trump supporter.
    Stay tuned.
Who DOESN'T love the British Bake-Off? I think Vivian describes why very well.

  6. It's only 10:00 here & I've already had a hard day, so BLAH is just perfect! I like YP's recommendations for t-shirt sayings for you. Although "Right" might be misconstrued. Ha!

  7. Blah is such a great tee-shirt. I never have words on my shirts, but that one would be great. The Gillum win is good news, still I worry so much about the coming election and voting shenanigans.

  8. My brother and his wife are currently in London, maybe even somewhere in this picture. The planets aligned today... or maybe this is an older pic?

  9. I had friends over to watch the election results and we were all pretty happy that not only did Arpaio lose, but he came in last. I'm also glad Kelly Ward didn't win. She is simply an awful person. However, McSally will be a tough opponent for Kristen Sinema. McSally already came out the gate slinging the mud.
We just finished last season's Great British Baking Show here. I can't believe the new has started over there.
By the way, did you see Friedman's editorial in the NY Times yesterday? Brilliant and scary!

  10. thanks goodness Arizona is a little woke and didn't vote for that heinous bastard Arpaio. and I would love to wake to early morning rain...or mid-day rain or night rain or any rain at all.

  11. I hope the two docs enjoy their cruise. I'm happy Gillum won.

  12. As one who lives in Arizona I share all of the disdain for Arpaio and Ward and relish their losses. Sinema will have her hands full with McSally but we have hope. And the Florida race pitting Gillum against DeSantis will be a barn burner. I must confess I had to Google Eton mess to see what it was and now I feel like such a "fool". (See what I did there?) I know - Blah, Blah, Blah.

  14. I wonder whether "Blah" refers to how the person feels or their talking (blah blah blah) . . . either way, I like it.

Yes, hopeful results in the primaries you mentioned. I hope the empire is starting to crumble.

  15. There is absolutely nothing 'Blah' about Eton mess - I say as I sit here, banging my spoon on the plate and shouting for more.
