I Got Nuthin'
Not much news from this corner of the world this morning. We're having more rain, which may be an example of too much of a good thing, but it looks like we'll dry out a bit over the weekend. Tomorrow is even supposed to be sunny!
Of course our weather is nothing compared to what's going on in Florida, and my thoughts are with Ms. Moon and the other Floridians who have endured the wrath of Helene. I haven't heard from my family but I don't think they're in areas that are being particularly hard hit, thank goodness.
I'm about to start Taffy Brodesser-Akner's book "Long Island Compromise," which I'm looking forward to reading. And I'm ready for the weekend.
(Photo: A sycamore seed resting atop some graffiti on Finchley Road.)
Great photo. I’m watching Hurricane Helene with concern.
ReplyDeleteAny hurricane is concerning, but I was more concerned about this one than most!
DeleteI haven't heard about Hurricane Helene. Maybe it will be mentioned during this evening's news.
ReplyDeleteI have heard now. Don't worry. Ronnie is on to it and has prepared the state for such emergencies.
DeleteOh, brother!
DeleteSurely, Taffy Brodesser-Akner is a made-up name like Popeye the Sailorman or Cornelius Crane Chase.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm not certain if it's her birth name, but it's definitely her name!
DeleteLuckily for us here in Virginia, we are only supposed to get some downpours, but no high winds. I have lived through only one hurricane in my life back in 2003, and it was barely a category 1. I was scared to death. I cannot imagine anything more intense than that.
ReplyDeleteApparently the rain has been heavy up through Appalachia. (You've probably experienced it by now!)
DeleteI'm concerned about Florida too. My news stream talks of extensive power outages, trees down and roof damage but no bridge collapses. I'm thinking of Ms. Moon and my friend and his 2nd home on Captiva Island.
ReplyDeleteYeah, looks like lots of water and flooding along the west coast of Florida. Ugh!
DeleteLet's get all that rain out of London's system NOW! I hope your family remains ok in Florida.
ReplyDeleteWe do need a bit of drying-out!
DeleteIt's VERY RAINY & windy here in NC. I possibly shouldn't have tried to come into work, but fortunately there weren't any incidents. But since I work for the City we're in emergency mode - there will be flooding and downed trees. However that's all easy peasy compared to what's happened/happening in Florida!
ReplyDeleteDo you have to answer phones or do anything emergency-related, or do you stick to your administrative duties in situations like this?
DeleteMy brother was on the good side of Helene just across the border in Alabama and reported he just got several inches of rain and strong wind gusts. His biggest complaint was that he had to take down all their inflatable Halloween decorations for the second time in several weeks. His wife is kind of fanatical about decorating for Halloween.
ReplyDeleteWell, that WOULD be a pain, but small potatoes in the general scheme of things. Dave and I never decorate for holidays, and I like it that way!
DeleteThe Florida friends I've heard from, one in Tampa, others who evacuated south, are all okay, power restored in Tampa. So far so good
ReplyDeleteGood to know! I still haven't heard from my relatives in Tampa.
DeleteYou've got my curiosity as to what the photo is.
ReplyDeleteOh, I explained it in the italicized bit below the post -- just a maple seed sitting on some graffiti on an electrical box on Finchley Road.
DeleteAll the years that you had in Florida, what was the biggest hurricane you remember?
ReplyDeleteSee today's (Saturday's) post! And thanks for this prompt.
DeleteHope you have good weather for the weekend and you get to relax and/or have some fun, Steve!
ReplyDeleteMe too, though I have a cold so I guess I'm not going anywhere. :(
DeleteI looked at a map this morning and Helene seems to have come ashore west of Lloyd so I'm hoping Ms Moon and family was spared the brunt. nothing happening here much either.
ReplyDeleteIt actually seems to have come ashore southeast of her, in Perry, which is about 40 miles from her.
DeleteYeah, it came ashore between Tallahassee and Perry, and Lloyd is in there somewhere. Seems like the storm might have gone just east of Mary, but only just.
DeleteI wrote west? I meant east.
DeleteWhen I was a little kid, we used to call those seeds helicopters because of the way the would spin when the fell to the ground. I see in the NY Times that there is some serious flooding in Florida because of the storm. I hope your family and friends are all safe. I feel bad for complaining about the heat here. Other places have way more serious problems.
ReplyDeleteI know -- I feel bad complaining about our rain, when it's only a fraction of the rain many are dealing with!
DeleteMy friend in Tampa texted me this morning and said she had wind and rain only and never lost her power. I'm hoping it blows itself out without too much flooding along the way.
ReplyDeleteOK, good to know! I think if you're inland in Tampa you're probably fine. It's only people along the bayfront and waterways that got flooded, it seems.
DeleteIt sounds like it's been a particularly destructive and dangerous storm with the number of deaths and power outages. :(
ReplyDeleteFortunately it moved quickly and didn't just sit and churn.
DeleteI love that photo. Sycamore seed pods are endlessly interesting. I'm about in the middle of a biography of Larry McMurtry by Tracy Daugherty which I'm finding quite interesting. He was not quite the guy I'd long thought he was.
ReplyDeleteI heard about that book but I haven't read it. I loved "Lonesome Dove." I think that's the only McMurtry I've ever read.
DeleteWe had a windy night and I'm not talking about gas.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Ha! Yeah, my brother in Jacksonville said a tree fell on his neighbor's roof.
DeleteMary Moon has a post up this morning, they are all fine. I hope your Florida family are all okay. Pretty seed pod.
ReplyDeleteYes, I did see that after posting this. It was good to hear from her!
DeleteThanks, Steve. I don't know how I missed this.
