Snails on a Suitcase

We are on our second day of pretty steady rain, and I am SO thankful. It's been a while since we've had a really good rain, and I imagine all the plants luxuriating in it like a waitress in a bath after a long shift. If plants could breathe and sigh, I imagine they'd sigh with relief.

Olga has been reluctant to go outside, understandably, but during a break in the weather late yesterday morning I took the picture above on our high street. It was World Car Free Day, and West End Lane was closed to traffic all day (except for buses and emergency vehicles). Supposedly this is meant to reduce pollution and emphasize the benefits of clean air, but what it really meant is that all the traffic turned one block off West End Lane and went up and down OUR street.

Still, I walked up and down the high street with Olga, taking in the atmosphere. The tents were occupied by community groups educating people about things like recycling and group transportation, and there were musicians and other activities, though the whole scene was somewhat dampened by the weather. At least one jogger took the opportunity to run in the middle of the street, though I hope he kept an eye out for those buses and emergency vehicles.

I saw one woman carrying a rather battered suitcase and realized the suitcase was covered with cobwebs and snails. It looked like she'd found it behind someone's garage. I figured Dave can't make too much fun of me for rescuing things from people's rubbish -- at least I never came home with anything that decrepit.

We've got another orchid in bloom...

...and the white and pink one I showed you a couple of weeks ago is flowering even more profusely.

Dave and I watched "A Very Royal Scandal" over the last few days, which we enjoyed -- it's only three episodes long -- and now we're on the second season of "Monster," about the Menendez brothers. I remember the media being so captivated by that story in the early and mid-'90s, to the point where I developed a severe case of news fatigue about it. "Monsters" (it's plural for this season) promises to be entertaining (if controversial) viewing. For one thing, it proposes an incestuous relationship between the brothers, which I don't think was ever revealed in court -- I remember allegations that the father molested the boys, but never that they were involved with each other. I understand they're hardly model citizens but I'm not sure they deserve that re-victimizing, and isn't the story scurrilous enough without embroidering reality with fantasy?

  1. I'm watching Monsters as well -- but only because one of the assistant directors (AD) worked on it and has been telling me about it! He is my tenant in my back cottage.

    1. Funny! We're enjoying it, but it is a little over-the-top.

  2. The orchids are beautiful. Can't really blame Olga for not wanting to go out in the rain. But I'm sure your garden is gald to have a soaking. If plants could talk you'd hear a thankful "aaahhhh"

  3. I enjoyed a Very Royal Scandal but had to stop watching the Menendez brothers. I didn't like it after seeing what happened.

    1. Yeah, the violent scenes are quite graphic! Do you remember the case? I don't know whether it was as big in the UK as the USA.

  4. The suitcase thing sounds very odd - I feel I need to know how and where and why!

    1. Upon reflection, I think she was throwing it away. (See my next post!)

  5. Drat! I thought that World Car Free Day meant you could visit any car dealership and get yourself a free car. I was planning to get seven - one for each day of the week but my plan was thwarted by careless use of English.

  6. I need to watch A Very Royal Scandal. Can’t bring myself to watch Monster(s) although I’m still sadly curious. World Car Free Day does sound a bit overstated but I guess they mean well. How odd about the suitcase. I wonder what she was going to do with the snails. Someone else might have brushed it off before carrying it away. Maybe it was filled inside with spiders and snails.

    1. Monsters is pretty entertaining, and it's so gay. Maybe even a little TOO gay.

  7. It's interesting to see that street without any traffic at all.

  8. I hit the wrong button and posted before I was done. I love the orchids. It rained all day yesterday here in Chicago too. Today is supposed to be just cloudy but more rain is on the way for Tuesday.

  9. My first thought as you talked of World Car Free day was, "Where do all the cars go?"
Then I realized, down all the other streets.

  10. I looked at the Mendez brother link, and it is an interesting case.
On the wireless radio machine on Saturday, I listened to pet advice and I thought of Olga when the presenters were talking exercise for older dogs. What I learnt was, don't push it, and a couple of short walks is better than long. But you know this already.

    1. Oh, good. That confirms our instincts and what we've been doing! She doesn't ever want longer walks these days.

  11. I'm also very interested in the suitcase. What in the world? Maybe she was planning to build a snail habitat?

    1. Ha! I think she had one already, intentional or not!

  12. Is A Very Royal Scandal the Andrew Interview story? I don't have Prime but hope to find that someday. Despite the rain, it looks like an interesting day for a stroll!

    1. Yes, with Michael Sheen as Andrew. Hopefully it will become available somewhere else eventually!

  13. I remember hearing a lot about the Menendez brothers but didn't really know much about it. I think I'll pass.
Your orchids are lovely and I am hopeful that one day mine will bloom.

    1. It's a really good show, but I feel like it soft-peddles the horrors those guys grew up with. (If what they say is true.)

  14. I saw that on Netflix and almost started watching it but didn't. Instead I have been rewatching Dexter which I really enjoyed the first time I watched it a handful of years ago.

    1. Weirdly, I have never been able to watch "Dexter." I watched the first few episodes and couldn't watch anymore. I know it's supposed to be a sort of satire but I hated that scene of him torturing that first victim.

  15. Our long-awaited rain yesterday has our grass greening up again already. It's amazing how nature bounces back.
I watched the movie "Marcel the shell with shoes on" and thought it was very good.

  16. Your orchids are just beautiful. The obviously love the light where you have them.
Humans are so weird. Close off one area to cars as a statement and instead of skipping the car-use for a day, we just drive down another street.

    1. You'd think the sun would be too weak in England for them to prosper, but they manage. Yeah, I think whoever organizes World Car Free Day needs to re-calibrate the message.

  18. I think it would be nice to live in an urban area where everything was within walking distance, no cars, if I was inclined to live in n urban area which I'm not. not enough nature, open space, windows. we are in need of rain and yeah, Minnie hates rain, even just sprinkling, and won't go out in it unless she is desperate. nope, I can hold it longer.

    1. I love living in an urban environment within walking distance of everything. And we have plenty of nature in our garden! (Almost too much!)

  19. In London there is not need for a car. Having one is convenient for getting OUT of the city but otherwise, not needed. The thing I loved about Venice most was the no car , no motor bike rule, it was peaceful - I mean before tourists and Cruises took that little gem and trashed it. That was a long while ago!
We are in rain also- the change is pleasant, plants are glad!

  20. Interesting analogy with the waitress and the bath. We need some of that rain.

  21. We got heavy rain for two days last week. The stream behind my home started to flow again and everything looks refreshed and moist.
Your orchids are beautiful and to have both blooming simultaneously is fantastic.
Blocking roads from traffic seems to only happen for an event. Walking about without cars is lovely.

  22. They're the ones who killed the parents? I remember the name if not the specifics of the story. We have nice weather then rain coming in Wednesday. Since both lawns are mowed, it's perfect timing for some "watering."

    1. Yeah, that's them. It became tabloid fodder mostly because they lived in Beverly Hills and their dad was in the entertainment business, but it's really a pretty tragic story.

  23. The orchids are lovely. The Menendez brothers were local here, known, before the murders, for running a healthy fast food cafe. We missed their cafe.

  25. I can't imagine picking up a nasty suitcase "decorated" with cobwebs and snails. Yuck. Rebekah and I watched the series about the Menendez brothers. We got caught up in it and couldn't quit, but I'm sure quite a bit of the portrayal was invented. The only reason to suggest Lyle and Erik had an incestuous relationship is the desire to play to viewers' prurient interests.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. It IS addicting, but I agree that the show caters to prurience! All those shots of Lyle and Erik lounging around seductively in Speedos? It seems a little extreme, even to me!
