Skunk, NAFO and Another Moment
Here's another dewy plant in our garden -- an aquilegia that's just sprouting. More signs of spring and new growth!
I think my computer is biting the dust. When I started it this morning, after it nursed at its charger all night, it promptly died. I got a "low battery" notice but when I clicked on the icon, it said the battery was at 98 percent (although I also got a "service recommended" alert). Anyway, I can't do much on battery now, and the speaker is shot, and a lot of the letters are worn off my keyboard, which looks hilarious. I've had this machine for nine years and it's had heavy use. I think its time has come.
I probably won't deal with that until we come back from Florida. I have enough on my plate at the moment.
Yesterday afternoon was quiet in the library and I finally got some things done that I've been meaning to tackle, like updating our database usage statistics. Doesn't that sound exciting?! Woo hoo! I even had a chance to respond to blog comments and catch up on some blogs.
I expect more of the same today, though I have a couple of projects I want to work on, like cleaning up our resource lists and collections in our catalogue. (Sometimes when a class does a certain project, we put together a list of books for the students to draw on as resources, and those lists tend to stack up in our computer even if the class never does that project again. They must be manually cleared out from time to time.)
You know how I'm always intrigued by stickers I find around town? Here's one that's a bit mysterious. What on earth is NAFO? And what is that creature that looks like a fox with Donald Trump hair?
Well, according to the ever-reliable Internet, NAFO stands for the North Atlantic Fella Organization, an "internet meme and social media movement" that arose after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It's meant to counter Russian propaganda and support Ukraine, and its symbol is a Shiba Inu dog, which is somehow related to the Doge meme. I think I'm too unhip to really understand how all these things come together, but at any rate, that's what we're dealing with.
Speaking of being unhip, I walked into the library yesterday and smelt a distinct skunky smell. I thought, "How did some animal get into the library?" I wondered if a fox had invaded the building and left its mark somewhere. But then a co-worker came up to me and said, "Did you smell the marijuana when you came in this morning?" Oh, is that what it was?! Now I once again understand why some people call it skunk. Why the library smelled like marijuana I could not tell you, but I assure you I was not involved.
Finally, here's another item from my archives -- a 12-second "Moment of Zen." Back in 2011 I uploaded a video of light changing on a wall over a period of about two minutes. In my days of Zen practice, this is the kind of thing we'd notice while meditating facing a wall -- the patterns of light shifting and changing. I suppose I was trying to convey some of that meditative tranquility. I took the video above on the same day, as a first attempt. It's too short, but if you need a quick Moment of Zen, here you go.
I love spending time watching interesting shadows on walls. But I’m not very Zen. Interesting about NAFO. Never heard of it. Funny about the skunk smell. I hope the books didn’t absorb it. That could be awkward.
ReplyDeleteFortunately I don't think the smell was strong enough to permeate the books!
DeleteI used to think we had a local skunk until I realized what it was! No experience.
ReplyDeleteI've always loved the art the sun makes on walls.
I love it too. Shadows were intially one of the main focuses of my blog -- hence the name!
DeleteWhen you say, "I have enough on my plate at the moment" maybe you should remove some of it. Reducing portion size is a good way of controlling one's weight. I wonder why there was a lingering aroma of marijuana in the library? If you find out, please inform your readership.
ReplyDeleteAs Americans go, I'm pretty good at portion control! The smell remains a mystery, though the maintenance people have floated the possibility that it is a dead creature in a wall or vent. It doesn't seem that strong to me and in fact today (a day after I wrote this post) I haven't smelled it at all.
DeleteBut did you notice the background sounds?
ReplyDeleteHa! Well, Zen is whatever's happening, including mysterious voices from the street. :)
DeleteI'm curious about the marijuana smell. Please let us know if you find out the source!
ReplyDeleteThe maintenance people think it really is an animal, possibly dead. None of us are convinced.
DeleteNever a dull moment...
ReplyDeleteThat's for sure!
DeleteI wouldn't know what a skunk smells like - fortunately perhaps.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's not a smell you'll soon forget.
DeleteIs it students or staff responsible for the skunk? Will we ever know?
ReplyDeleteI think that will remain forever a mystery!
DeleteI'm thinking nine years is a good long run for a computer these days, especially once the letters start to wear off.
ReplyDeleteI was hoping to make it to 10, but that might be too much to hope for.
DeleteI had my comp for 10 years of hard use and then one day it just declared nope! And never booted up properly again. Time for a new machine my friend.
ReplyDeleteAnd I don't want to wait TOO long and be left computerless at some point!
DeleteI feel like you were afraid your computer was dying a while back & you nursed it back to life? Am I dreaming that? Oh, and the keyboard I'm currently using has the "N" and M" letters rubbed off so I used a whiteout pen to put them back. Ha!
ReplyDeleteI've probably complained about my computer before. It's been VERY reliable but occasionally it hiccups.
DeleteThanks for the moment!
ReplyDeleteFor what it's worth! :)
DeleteI'll be in traffic sometimes and smell skunk. The funny thing is, I always think of the animal first and then my mind will remind me that no one is likely to be toting a skunk around in their car.
ReplyDeleteBut sometimes that really IS a skunk, dead on the side of the road. At least that's what I've always suspected, though I rarely if ever see the actual animal.
DeleteMy computer is old and it was a hand-me-down from my sister so I don't even know how old. I wonder if I will need a new one soon. I keep getting notices from Microsoft about how Microsoft 10 is expiring? Does that mean my computer won't work? Do you know about this?
ReplyDeleteEllen, Microsoft is pulling support for Windows 10. Your machine must be at a certain level to run Windows 11. The upgrade software will assess your computer to see if you're compatible. If not, then a new one will be required. Or you can probably keep running 10, but there will be no more security updates in the future. If you are capable of 10, the upgrade to 11 is free until October, after that you have to pay for it. We're girding our loins to upgrade Jim's to 11.
DeleteThank you, Allison, for answering Ellen's question! I'm an Apple user so I don't know much about Microsoft.
DeleteHello , It was your stunning photograph of the Aquilegias that drew me in ! πΏππΏ
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked it! Another month or two and we'll hopefully have blossoms!
DeleteI'm in the same position with my computer as you are. My computer is almost 6 years old.
ReplyDeleteYou probably have a few years left, depending on what type of computer it is.
DeleteI don't think that marijuana used to smell like skunk but it does now. Perhaps someone was in there with the scent clinging to their clothes. Smoke of any kind is pervasive. My laptop is getting old too but I just want it to keep working forever. My battery did that but John replaced it and now it works fine.
ReplyDeleteI remember people calling it "skunk" but I don't remember when that started. I don't remember it smelling like skunk the handful of times I smoked it in college.
DeleteIt was a revelation to me when I learned that pot now smells like skunk. Fortunately the smell of skunk (animal OR plant) has never really offended me. (a very telling statement, according to my son π) It's the smell of chicken litter or paper mill that I find off-putting.
ReplyDeleteI remember driving through Jacksonville, Fla., in the '70s and the whole city was redolent of the smell of paper mills. It was terrible.
DeleteI have never had a computer last that long. My last one died rather quickly when the hinge failed. That was extraordinarily irritating.
ReplyDeleteThat IS annoying! I've never had the physical housing of the machine fail.
DeleteI'd be thrilled to get nine years out of a laptop, 2,5 seems to be the norm for us...
ReplyDeleteI buy Apples and they do tend to last, but they're more expensive at the outset. So there's a trade-off.
DeleteThanks, I needed that moment of zen today. I thought I had this cold on the run but this morning I decided to take the day off work and stay in bed. I really do hate being sick.
ReplyDeleteYou can count me among the "unhip" group. I get memes sent to me all the time and I have no idea what half of them mean. I see several people on my mail list "liking" the meme while I just remain silent. Unhip I am.
Yes, it does sound like a new Mac is in order. I remember when I got mine last year, I was so nervous that things might get lost but, it was actually a seamless process. I did lose one app but that was my fault. I forgot all about it.
Ha! I know, I don't get a lot of memes either. Especially if they refer to videogames or certain YouTube stars or stuff like that.
DeleteStrange, but you know what your 'moment of zen' brought to me. Being a child and sitting at a small folding table on someone's lap, and the sun was shining through the window and I was fascinated watching the dust motes in the sun. I wonder how old I was. Old enough to have language skills, because I remember someone commenting on it.
ReplyDeleteGeorgia O'Keeffe always said her earliest childhood memory was of sunlight all around her. She was still an infant at the time, or so she later said.
DeleteNo doubt some students were smoking weed.
ReplyDeleteI wonder! There are some bathrooms not far away and they could be a possible site for smoking, I suppose.
DeleteI think some of us (not the marijuana smokers) may need an hour or more of zen.)
ReplyDeleteHa! Yeah, 12 seconds of Zen just allows one or two deep breaths.
DeleteThe weed smell indoors lingers. It is off-putting.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like, you'll have to look for a new computer.
I think I'll take that on when I get back from Florida!
DeleteWe don't have skunks in Australia so I don't know the smell, but I do often have a very strong, thick, dense odour of something coming from the unit next door-across-the-lobby when they open up to air it out. If I don't shut my doors and windows fast enough it gets right in here and lingers for hours.
ReplyDeleteYou have Granny's Bonnets! (aquilegia)
Hmmmm...either they have a malodorous pet or they're smoking something!
DeleteWhen I was a young thing at university, marijuana never smelled like skunk, at least not to my nose. Has it changed? In defense of my reputation - if I have one - I was not one of the ones partaking, just attending parties where it was part of the overall ambiance :)
ReplyDeleteSpring really is breaking out in your part of the world!
I've read that it is MUCH stronger now. We oldsters think it's this mild drug like we may have encountered in our youth, but apparently that is no longer true.
DeleteI attended a Steve Miller Band concert many years ago. The smell of marijuana is still engrained upon my senses. I'm pretty sure I had a second hand high that night, the only time in my life.
ReplyDeleteHa! Yeah, those '70s bands definitely brought along that kind of vibe. I went to a Grateful Dead concert in the mid-'80s where I had a similar experience.
