Clowns and Trellises

You may remember I found one of these mysterious "Vote 4 Clowns" stickers in Hackney many months ago. Well, now the stickers have come to me -- this one was on the high street near the West Hampstead tube station. Interpret it as you will.

I have nothing much to report from yesterday's workday. I was busy, mostly covering books. We're buying a ton of stuff for summer reading promotions, and we've got to get all that ready. The paperbacks get covered with a plastic laminate that must be trimmed and fitted, and the hardbacks get a plastic dust-jacket protector. My hands are actually sore from book covering. (Nothing to do with my age!)

Then, walking home, I came across this on the sidewalk:

In case you can't tell, that looks like a couple of pet cages, a patio umbrella, some miscellaneous metal objects and three conical trellises, all abandoned next to a public trash bin. I sent this picture to Dave and said, "Can we use these?"

"The trellises would be cool," he said.

"OK, I'll grab the two big ones," I wrote back.

"The number of times I've heard you say that!" he said. And only when that comment got laughs from multiple people did I realize that I'd accidentally started this entire exchange in a family chat involving Dave's sister, nephew, niece and her husband, and possibly several others. Oops.

Anyway, I brought the trellises home, where they are momentarily sitting in our front hallway. Incidentally, I also found the chair, the window and the rocking horse discarded on the street over a period of years.

I put our garden cam back out the other day after several months of absence. Just thought I'd check up on the critters and see what's happening out there. Here's a condensed version of the result -- two cats, a fox and Olga, vigorously scratching around after probably having done her business, fortunately off-camera. Oh, and any concerns I had about the absence of squirrels were clearly unwarranted, because I have about a million squirrel clips. (I included one of a squirrel dirt-bath.)

I don't love the way that first cat is gazing into the trees, and then climbing into them. That spells bad news for our birds. I thought fox urine was supposed to deter other animals, but clearly the cats aren't worried!

  1. Your Obelisk are a great find, they are not cheap to buy

  2. What a find the wire obelisks are - I would have snapped up all three.
I didn't know squirrels did dust baths just like chickens - interesting

  3. Perhaps your hands got sore through book covering duties because of your age. How many books did Cruella Deville cover yesterday?

    1. Well, OK, I'm sure my age had something to do with it. Cruella would cover books with the skins of Dalmatians.

  4. Our gardens don't belong to us. We just borrow them from the true owners.

    1. That is absolutely true. Wildlife still prevails, fortunately.

  5. The edited clip was interesting watch. What an impressive cat jump to the tree.

    1. I wish it would jump into someone else's tree. Or better yet, onto an indoor scratching post.

  6. I hate to comment with a link, but I found this info on those Vote for Clowns stickers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx1QT4T3X-Q
Even I would have grabbed up those trellises. What a great find. And not cheap either. That was quite the cache on the street.

    1. Ha! Thanks for the video! I had no idea it was a political party (of sorts).

  7. What a lively mix of urban oddities and garden adventures—mystery stickers, accidental family chat comedy, and a whole cast of critters on camera!

  8. Personally, I've felt that most of my country has been voting for clowns most of my life.

    1. Yeah, I suppose that's pretty much the point. If we're going to vote for clowns, let's vote for REAL clowns.

  10. Looks as if someone is moving or abandoning their gardening mojo. I'd have brought those support things home, too. And some people use bird cages for vining house plants.

    1. My guess is they cleaned out a garage or storage shed. I couldn't carry all that stuff, so I had to pick and choose!

  11. So, you are the Mike Waltz of the of the obelisk trellis world! As soon a I saw that photo (before reading the paragraph) I thought "I wonder which of these is coming back to the garden with Steve!"

  13. Looks like somebody cleaned out someone else's garden. The tall trellises are a good find. I remember when you found the little rocking horse and maybe even the chair.

    1. Yeah, the chair was a while ago -- way back in 2017!

    1. A house down the street was under renovation and they took out all the leaded glass windows. They were throwing them in a skip! I rescued the ones that weren't already broken -- five in all.

  15. Okay. That was a good one. Nothing like spicing up a family text! I have one of those trellises too and have never used it. It came with the yard. I need to do something with it.

    1. I bet your rattlesnake beans would love it! I'm not sure what we'll do with ours, but Dave's clematis needs a new home so maybe we'll put it in the ground and twine it up one of those things.

  16. You do find interesting things. What is that blue domed thing? That's so funny about your group chat!
When I worked in a school library, at the end of the school year when we did inventory, we actually wiped down the cover of each and every book. You would not believe how dirty the water would get as we did that job...

    1. I think the dome thing is some kind of yoga ball or therapy device. I can't believe you had to wipe down every book! We don't do that, fortunately.

  17. My first thought when I saw that sign was that "a lot of people did vote for a clown". But then I thought, that would be giving clowns a bad name.
I did exactly the same texting thing a week ago when I texted my friend David to see if he wanted to get some champagne and I accidentally sent it on a group thread. Now that whole group knows my weakness.
I love seeing all the wildlife activity in your back garden. It's quite a busy place.

    1. Ha! Well, at least (like mine) it was a relatively harmless text.

  18. Interesting that you have a rocking horse in the house. I missed the story on that one.

    1. Oh, I found it last fall discarded in St. John's Wood. I thought I might use it as a plant stand but for now it's just sitting as a decorative objet.

  19. Good finds. Sadly, voting for clowns is a world-wide trend. Thankfully, we (in Canada) just elected an anti-clown, but not by a lot. Sigh.

  20. I try to be careful which text thread I choose for that very reason! 😂 The animals in your video all look very healthy and well fed. (hopefully not on birds) I love the markings on that second cat. Come look at my photo post before it goes away tomorrow!

    1. I suppose some might be fed on birds but I don't mind if it's a wild animal -- after all, they have to eat. House cats, on the other hand, have plenty of food. Why is your post going away?

  21. Great finds. The obelisks add a nice feature in the garden. They work well standing in large pots too. A friend stands an obelisk in a pot and wraps it with live garland for Christmas then she adds some ornaments.
The wildlife in your garden are very healthy looking. For a cat hunting birds, I once put a small bell on the collar to give some warning to the birds.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I tried that once and the cat ripped off his collar!

    2. I hadn't thought of the Christmas tree option! We have an obelisk in a pot to support our clematis, but it's a much smaller one.

  22. Cats are quick and can climb; they're also arrogant. Just ask Mari! I'm always afraid that I'll accidentally put comments on a group chat and offend someone. I have rarely texted the wrong person but it's been with a benign comment. Good finds!

  24. I love those trellises. I would have grabbed them two. Love the fox too:)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Too, not two. How embarrassing.

    ReplyDelete
  26. C'mon, leave those poor cats alone!

    1. They need to stay home. I wouldn't mind them if they didn't prey on the wildlife. But realistically it's not like I can do anything about them. They're part of the ecosystem at this point.

  27. I would have taken all three trellises and gone back for the pet cages. Wrapped in shade cloth they'd be ideal seed starter houses. Safe from possums and rats.

    1. Oh, that's an interesting idea! Unfortunately all these items were about a mile from our house so going back wasn't really an option. I'm sure someone took them.

  28. Great find, those trellises! Well done.
