Garden Antics

Remember how I said I wasn't seeing the starlings on our bird feeder anymore? Never mind.

Yesterday's drain adventure went more smoothly than Tuesday's boiler adventure. The guy still took half the day to get here -- he showed up about 1:30 p.m. -- but he handled the problem quickly and I was able to go to work for the last two hours of the day, so that's something. My boss had planned in my absence to close the library half an hour early, but in the end we didn't have to.

I spent the morning reading and catching up on some other things. We're going to buy a new rug to go with our new couch -- which arrives next week -- so I narrowed down the choices on those and Dave and I made a selection in the evening. I'll show it to you when it arrives, hopefully around the same time as the couch. It's a little sad to get rid of the old rug, which we call the "purple grass" because Olga spent so much time lying on it just as she would the lawn outside. But we've had it since 2012 and it's looking pretty tired.

Our canna lily has sent up a new cluster of flowers! It got a late start but it's not letting up, even though the temperatures are dropping.

I also backed up my computer and downloaded the footage from the garden cam.

Key moments from this tranche (I love that word) of video clips:

1. We start with all four of our regular feline visitors: Pale Cat, Bell the Bengal, Blackie and Tabby. As you can see, I did not put a whole lot of energy into those names.
2. At 0:54, the fox shows up and discreetly does his business behind some bushes.
3. At 1:15, squirrel antics.
4. At 1:33, Bell sniffs at three pieces of leftover sushi I put out for whoever wanted it. She doesn't eat it, but a couple of magpies appear and polish it off.
5. At 2:35, magpies and a squirrel.
6. At 2:53, a very weird shot of an animal's back as it walks extremely close to the camera. It looks a bit like a furry Loch Ness Monster sliding by. I can't tell if it's a fox or a cat.
7. At 3:12, an especially crazy squirrel.
8. At 3:32, Bell the Bengal ambles leisurely past, and then trots quickly in the opposite direction. Something alarmed her!
9. At 4:03, the best shots of the fox -- or possibly foxes. The clip from 8:19 p.m. shows one animal, but I think the last clip, from 2:30 a.m., shows another. The tail doesn't look the same -- no white tip. What do you think?

You'll notice that the camera moves around a bit. I've been experimenting with different locations, but I still think the vantage point shown at the beginning of the video is the best so far.

  1. Definitely different foxes. I'm glad the drainage was easy to fix, until it happens again.

  2. Clearly two different foxes. The hyperactive squirrel is what cartoons are made of. I love the first camera position for the depth it provides, but I also enjoy seeing the garden activities from different viewpoints. (So, I guess I’m no help.)

    1. That crazy squirrel cracked me up -- when it zooms across the frame at top speed! LOL

  3. Rather than missing more time off work why not suggest that your boss comes over to wait in your luxury garden flat for the sofa delivery? I am sure that she can be trusted not to riffle through your drawers - seeking to unravel The Reed Enigma.

    1. Not much enigma here. My whole life is on the Internet!

  4. My sister has a camera in the woods behind her house in suburban Boston. She has recorded all sorts of creatures...deer, bear, coyotes. Glad your drain adventure went better than the boiler!

    1. Oh, I bet she gets lots of interesting stuff there! I wish I lived in a woodsier locale with badgers and hedgehogs.

  5. When you wrote that you were able to get to work for the last couple of hours of the day, my first though was that your boss would be angry because she was planning on closing early and going home.

    1. Ha! Well, if I'm there, she's free to leave, so she wouldn't mind.

  6. Great video, we must get a camera in the garden. Thanks.

  7. I wonder if your boss thinks you're making her sorry you're going to retire! Clearly you're vital if they have to close early when you're not there. I hope you tell her you're flattered. No? Just me, tactless one, then?

    1. I said that to my co-worker -- maybe this will drive home my importance!

  8. Such a usually unseen world of animal busy-ness. Do you ever feel like you're spying on the animals? Obviously I've read too many children's books.

  9. Glad that all the water issues are taken care of. And yeah, definitely two different foxes I think.

    1. Right?! They seem about the same size but the coloring is slightly different.

  10. I enjoy the garden camera and, the various positions, gives a better idea of your yard/garden area.
Your waiting on service people to show up is early training for retirement! LOL
On Netflix, there's a short half-hour piece about prisoners in Missouri who create quilts for all of the foster children in their area! "The Quilters" ... it's very good and they make beautiful quilts! I just watched it yesterday!

    1. That's a good recommendation! We'll watch for it -- but sometimes things on Netflix in the states aren't available here in the UK.

    1. She really is beautiful! I'm glad the owner put a bell on her collar too, to warn off the birds and other potential prey.

  13. Lots of visitors to your garden. That camera works well.

  14. For me, it always feels good when repairs are done and things are working well again.
Your garden is a menagerie of activity. I also think you have multiple foxes.
The new couch and rug will make your room nicely refreshed and just in time for cozy winter evenings.

    1. I had one video several months ago that showed two foxes together, so I know -- at that time anyway -- there were at least two of them.

  15. I love seeing foxes trotting along. They're so elegant.

  16. I usually watch the video and then skim through your times and descriptions. When I got to the part with the "furry loch ness monster", I thought exactly that same thought as you and chuckled when I read your description.

  17. Great wildlife video again. The cats are so relaxed just nosing around but those squirrels, they are manic.

    1. Normally they're pretty chill but sometimes they get wacky. This one must have smelled something scary. Probably fox!

  18. It sometimes helps with the grief to eventually replace furniture/rugs. I re-did my bedroom and bathroom a few years after my husband died, at my daughter's suggestion. It made the rooms mine and not ours.

    1. That's what we were thinking. We've wanted a new sofa for a long time but we delayed because of Olga, and now is the time.

    1. Yeah, her contract time ends before the library closes so I'm the one who's supposed to be there for the last hour or so. (Though she often is as well.)

  20. I love that top photo! It's a great action shot of the birds. My favorite is the one on the back side with its mouth open!

  21. Yes, two different foxes. Squirrels with the zoomies !!!!!

  22. I imagine the couch and the rug both had been thoroughly worn out by the time Olga died. I look at my couches and would love to get new ones, but what's the point:)

    1. Yeah, as long as there are dogs there's really no point. That's what slipcovers are for, I suppose!

  23. That is a fantastic photo of the starlings!

  24. It does seem like you have at least two different foxes. It's amazing how much wildlife you capture on camera for such an urban area. That Bengal has such a striking coat. And your comment about the names you gave them made me laugh :)

  25. I've given up on rugs altogether, they catch so much dust and cat hair, I'd rather not have to clean them. I have a mat for the bathroom and that's it. I love the birds on the feeder with the spread wings.

    1. When I had cats I didn't have rugs either. Dog hair is more manageable, especially with a short-haired dog like Olga.

  26. That canna is beautiful. I don't get closing half hour early just because you are missing, but to each their own. Glad all went smoothly.
