The Bowl, and a Surprise

Is this a Novemberish picture or what? I came across this scene while walking to work yesterday morning. It seems like all the leaves in the city plummeted to the ground over the weekend. The street sweepers have a lot to keep up with.

Some of you asked for a closer look at all the items in the bowl on my desk -- as well as the bowl itself. I did this once before, back in 2021, but some of the objects were different then! So yesterday I laid everything out on a piece of blue posterboard -- I'm sure the kids were wondering what the heck I was up to -- and took a photo.

As you can see, there are random game pieces, bits of jewelry, guitar picks, coins from Hungary and Romania, some friendship bracelets and one of those interlocking puzzles, among other things. The glass "candy" came from my previous boss, who brought it from Prague. When I leave next April, I'll keep that, as well as the plastic bee, which I found years ago while walking Olga on the high street.

I may save a few other items for my bowls of miscellany here at home -- that silver bird-shaped earring at the top, above the unicorn, is very cool and clearly handmade, and was also found on the street near our flat. (It wound up on my desk because I was walking to work at the time.) Everything else, including the bowl, will be passed on to my successor, in all likelihood.

Out of the blue, a mysterious package arrived for me yesterday. It had no return address and when I opened it I found this elaborate leather-bound album with an Egyptian motif. Inside were black-and-white photos and a card:

Dear Mr. Reed,
I hope that all is well with you? Please find enclosed a photograph album that was rescued from a skip. There was a plan to research the photographs! As you are a patient man with vast knowledge and keenness, I thought you might be interested. If not, please feel free to recycle them as you wish. Your blog is a pleasure to read. Thank you. Regards, C.

Well, this is the BEST THING that has happened to me for a long time! Thank you, C., whoever you are, for passing along this treasure. I can't believe someone threw away such a beautiful old album full of memories. You greatly overestimate my knowledge and patience, but maybe not my keenness, and I will do my best to deliver some information about the contents in a future post. (Maybe as soon as tomorrow, if I manage to promptly scan the pictures.) Just glancing through, I can tell already that they involve travel to Australia -- so readers Down Under may be particularly interested. More to come!

  1. The cover doesn't look very Down Under.
Where did the bowl come from? A friend bought a similar one as a gift for us when she was in Turkey.
I look forward to your forensic analysis of the photos.

    1. Ships used to sail to Australia via the Suez Canal...maybe the album was a souvenir bought there?

    2. Yes, I think Gwynneth is right about the album. The bowl was a gift from a former boss's boss -- I think it's Moroccan.

  4. How exciting - the arrival of the leather bound album I mean. Before you even open it a few things strike me. How did the sender know your school address? Why is the salutation "Mr Reed" and not "Steve"? Do the names of any of your commenters begin with "C"? The use of the term "skip" suggests that the sender is British. These things aside, I am looking forward to observing how your "vast knowledge" is applied to the images within.

    1. My school address wouldn't be hard to find. I don't think I've ever named the school on my blog, but I've linked to the web site (when I did the Newbery project) and besides, there aren't many American schools in St. John's Wood! As for "Mr. Reed," I'm sure the sender is just being polite. I do have commenters named C but who knows -- this person may never comment. A lot of blog readers prefer to remain silent!

  5. How intriguing! How did the sender know where you work, or did it, slightly more worryingly, arrive at your home address? I'm sure we're all agog and maybe slightly envious that you have been selected for this mission. I can see this as the stepping-off point to a mystery novel, or a history of someone as yet unknown.

    1. It did arrive at school. I think they just figured out where I work based on the fact that I've mentioned walking to St. John's Wood and that I work at an American school.

  6. Everyone is asking how the sender knew where you work...I know where you work because you've mentioned it several times, so finding an address wouldn't be hard! :) What fun, to get a random package from a blog reader! Maybe that person will eventually identify him/herself?

  7. I love seeing leaves on the ground; totally Fall, though we hit winter this morning when it was 28-degrees F when we woke up!!
And what a cool surprise gift; and you're right, who would throw that away?

  16. Codex: Not me!
Your life is like a magical realism tale. Reminds me of griffin and Sabine. The cover looks touristy. It'll be interesting to see what you discover.

My first though at seeing all the trinkets laid out was wondering what the stories behind them are. Don't students know there's a lost and found?

    1. Oh, I haven't thought of Griffin and Sabine in ages. I used to have a couple of those books.

Re. the trinkets, when I first find them, I usually leave them in a prominent place on my desk so they can be seen and hopefully claimed. If they go unclaimed they eventually join the bowl. I imagine kids don't even realize some of those things are missing.

  20. Fun little assortment in the bowl. I have a few things I've found on the street. Maybe I'll post about those. And what fun, a surprise gift! But clearly the sender knows you well enough to have your mailing address.

  21. Yes, the top photo is VERY Novemberish indeed.
The bowl full of miscellaneous small items is a great example of serendipity.
And I love it that you received the old photo album from a mysterious benefactor! It could be the start of a great story...

  22. Your bowl of curiosities carries a varied good mix of random bits. I do like the randomness of it. Tiny bits in one bowl and all so very anonymous.
With some research and investigation, the mystery album should reveal some history.
Someone knows you well enough to send the album to you, knowing it will be in good hands.

  30. That is a beautiful album, and so is that little bowl on your desk, there is NO way I'd be leaving that behind. The leaves actually look cosy, you know there are warm woollies and nights by the fire on the way. Hot roasted meats and apple pie...
