Rainy Walk and Coughing Fox

Free picture frame, anyone? Kind of a peculiar way to offer it up, and I'm afraid the rain hasn't done it any favors, but it's there if you want it. I also found a free chair (below) that I left behind.

I came across these treasures on an unexpected walk to work yesterday morning. I realized that I once again needed a computer cable adapter, this time to download the video from the garden cam to my new Mac. Remember how it only has two ports and my devices don't fit them? Also, Dave couldn't find his headphones and thought they were at work, and I had a couple of other things to drop off at the office. So I took a walk.

I got the adapter, dropped off the stuff and couldn't find Dave's headphones. And because I wasn't on a timetable I could make it a leisurely walk, stopping to take pictures now and then, even though it was raining lightly. I remember a photography teacher of mine telling me years ago to get out in all weather, because pictures on a rainy day could be just as interesting as those in sunshine and they offer all sorts of possibilities.

When I got back home, I went on Amazon and ordered my own cable adapter, which I should have done last week.

So that was the morning.

In the afternoon I spent time catching up on blogs and reading The New Yorker. Yes, I'm finally trying to work through my massive backlog of New Yorkers. I've been off the magazine entirely for several months but I intend to catch up. We'll see how that goes. Right now I'm reading an issue from August!

Here's what the garden cam yielded from the past week or so. At 0:24 we get a good look at a fox stretching, and at 0:43 we see one scratching and then hear the poor thing having a coughing fit. Wonder what brought that on? I suppose foxes get respiratory illnesses too, especially in this weather. At the one-minute mark we briefly see Pale Cat and then Tabby comes by at 1:29.

In the afternoon I did some springtime pruning. It seems a bit early but the roses are already putting out new growth so it was time. I pruned them back as well as the buddleia.

I haven't heard a thing from the tree man about clearing that ivy at the back. I think we've been ghosted. If I want it done I may have to do it myself. Which will be interesting, since we don't own a ladder.

We have crocuses, but as you can see, the squirrels are already gnawing the flower heads off!

  1. I look forward to the day when an inquisitive fox eats your garden camera as the resulting scenes inside the fox should be interesting from an anatomical point of view.

    1. My camera works in low light, but that might be TOO dark.

  2. I completely agree with your photography teacher. There is something in all kinds of weather.
The blue chair is quite nice, but I would hesitate to pick up any upholstered furniture from an unknown source. (I know you didn‘t take it.)
Thanks again for the camera footage! The fox with the stripped tail tip has not been around, it seems.

    1. Yeah, I draw the line at salvaging upholstered furniture from the sidewalk! I haven't seen the fox with the injured tail in a couple of weeks.

  3. That is quite a cough. No sneaking up on anything with that condition.

    1. I know! Poor thing! It wasn't coughing on camera, though, so it must not be constant.

  4. That poor fox. Maybe you should put out a Covid test... or some Robitussin.

  5. Chair has potential!
Fox sounds like an old man waking for the day. Getting breathing apparatus in order. It is fine to say go out to take photos in inclement weather- the reality of that is more complicated. Rain on lens, frozen fingers, slippery camera.

    1. Yes, it can be difficult. One of my photographer pals destroyed her camera shooting in the rain!

  6. Not a bad looking chair ... perhaps nestled in the garden as a fox bed???

    1. Ha! Upholstered furniture in the garden is so...trashy.

  7. I don't even try crocuses! They last one day max before robins tear them apart to get at the pistils, which are evidently delicious. Then there's shreds of flowers strewn around.

    1. Yeah, the flowers apparently have a lot of sweet nectar in them, which is why squirrels tear them apart as well.

  8. That blue chair looks very nice. I wonder why it was discarded like that. As usual, there is a lot going on in your garden at night. I hope you get some dry weather sometime soon.

    1. Who knows. Some people throw everything out when they move. Or maybe it has bedbugs?!

  9. That chair is pretty nice if one had the space for it. (I could see it in your blue bedroom!) Poor fox. Wonder if he choked on something he ate?

    1. Hard to tell whether his throat is injured or it's an illness. Could be either one.

  10. Behind several months? If you're reading August you're behind half a year. Were it me I'd be canceling that subscription. I can't even keep up with the news links in my email.

    1. The problem is, when I DO read it, I love it and I inevitably learn new things.

  12. I guess you'll just have to climb the tree to get rid of the ivy.

    1. I'm not sure that tree would support my weight. I could stand on the wall but that wouldn't get me to the top of the tree.

  13. I hope there's not some horrible fox virus going around. That sounds like a serious cough. Of course, I'm not a vet.
You've reminded me that I need to prune my roses too. One more thing on the yard and garden to-do list which already overwhelms me to the point of being paralyzed.

  15. I really wish there could just be a national standard for all cables. We have a drawer in a small bureau that is probably a foot wide by 3 feet long by 8 inches deep that is completely crammed full of cables, chargers, adapters, etc. that I can't bring myself to throw away just yet, and still, 90% of the time I search it for what I need I come up empty. I think I weeded it out heavily a couple years ago now when Apple ditched the firewire and it is still full.

    1. We have a similar drawer. I suppose everyone does. There are cables and plugs in there whose use is a complete mystery to me.

  16. Eventually, your new laptop will be full function. Having to order online makes the purchases easy. That said, I always wish all the bits were sold to me on the day of purchase.
The fox seems ill. That cough is terrible.
I look forward to Spring when I can work in the garden too. With lots of snow on the ground and more predicted for Wednesday, it is going to take some time.

  18. I like rainy days, just not a steady diet of them. (like our two atmospheric rivers in the fall-ugh) I feel for the fox, having had a couple coughing fits a few nights back. I felt like I was going to throw up. Better now, thankfully!

  19. That's fox's cough is terrible! Maybe put out some lozenges for him. lol

  21. I had to look up coughs in foxes because that's what I'm like. It's usually caused by lungworm and can be fatal. The article said to report coughing foxes to a local wildlife society for treatment.

    1. OK -- good to know! I'll see what I can do. I wonder how they treat them? If it's a dose of medicine I'll participate, but if it's euthanasia I'd rather let nature take its course.

  24. Why are new laptops always made without what you need the most? I really miss the built in CD/DVD player and had to buy an external one, thank goodness my laptop has three usb ports.
Can you send a text to tree man and ask about the ivy cutting? He may just be busy with other pre-scheduled jobs.
