Hawaii, 1972

I don't have anything much to write about today, so I thought I'd post this photo of my Aunt Laurita and Uncle Rudolph's tour group in Hawaii in August, 1972. (I've had this photo on Flickr for a while, so apologies if you've already seen it.) This picture just cracks me up...the sunglasses, the hairstyles, that one anonymous teenager in the back row. (Click on the pic to see it in great detail!)

Aunt Laurita and Uncle Rudolph are on the far right in the second row -- Uncle Rudolph (who was really my great uncle) has white hair.

My guess is that this spot hasn't changed all that much in the past 36 years, but the tourists have a whole new set of hair, sunglasses, and vacation attire. Can you imagine being on a group trip with that many people?

What would really be funny would be to see a photo of the same group of people today. I suppose they would be in their 70's by now?

Actually, I think most of them were in their 60s or 70s even then! (My great uncle, for example, was in his early 60s.)

It's always interesting to see a group of older people. The women outnumber the men 2 to 1, by my count. I better start taking better care of myself!

I love it!

I love to people-watch... and in Hawaii, I play two games:

1) Couples: who's idea was it to come to Hawaii? (usually there is one person who is grinning from ear-to-ear and one person who is trudging along... guess which is which)

2) individuals: Bought it or brought it? I love to guess whether tourists brought a particular shirt from home or bought in Hawaii.

BTW, in your picture, I love the pants on the handsome fellow on the far right. Do you think his wife picked them out, or he picked them out himself?

I noticed those pants too. I say she bought them and the other guys dared him to wear them for the photo op.

Thought it was just me, but I totally want those pants. Great picture!

Another era entirely. Although to me, it doesn't seem so long ago . . .

The folks in the photograph remind me of how my grandparents looked when I first knew them (I was born in 1971).

I'm also wondering how people with names as diverse as Laurita and Rudolph ever got together. There's bound to be a good story there. (: )

GREAT photo. My favorite is that vision of beauty, third from the right on the front row. She looks like a Tracy Ullman character waiting to happen.

Wow, Steve! Ever wonder what you'll look like as an older guy? We'll save the photo and see. Love the pants, too.

given that you said most of the folks were 60 and 70 at the time this picture was taken, the big question is how many are still alive today! people do seem to be living longer today. in fact, people over 85 is the group with the biggest rate of growth (I don't know if I'm saying that correctly, but I hope you know what I'm trying to say)

I can't help but think, "Who's zoomin' who"? You are too much fun!

i'd just love to know the story about that teenager (? or is he older?) in the back row...

I think the guy in the jazzy pants is totally proud of them. He's in the front row, after all!

I agree with you, Junk Thief -- the woman third from right in the front is my favorite as well. She's so stylish! In fact, I think she pretty much makes the picture.

The young guy in the back is definitely a teenager. I'd say 16, 17 or so. Probably on vacation with his grandparents. Looks like he's having fun, in any case. "Peace, man!"
