Home Again

This was Friday night's Florida sunset, seen from the back yard of my stepmother's guest house. I love those filmy veils of clouds, lit by the sinking sun.

And now we're back in London. Olga was thrilled to see us, once I woke her up -- she was sound asleep on the couch and didn't hear us come in. She's been jumping around and is now lying next to me, sighing deeply. All is right with the world.

The flight was smooth. As a special treat, Dave and I bought business class seats for our return voyage. (They were the only ones available on the direct London to Gatwick flight, so it was either that or connect through some other city.) We were each in those pods with divider walls between them, and a seat that basically turns into a bed. I read The New Yorker, watched two episodes of "Absolutely Fabulous" and slept for part of the trip, a light snooze, but I'm still exhausted.

Here we are toasting through the partition between our pods, with our pre-takeoff champagne. Cheers!

And just for fun, here's my stepsister's cat, Ozzie, at her house in Tampa. Jennifer and her husband spoil their two cats rotten. They are very satisfied animals. (Of course I wouldn't know anything about spoiling pets.)

I'd give you a picture of Olga but I feel sure she'd be insulted if I put her in the same post as a cat.

    1. So far, so good. I think we were gone such a short time that my internal clock never had a chance to recalibrate!

  2. What a lovely treat to sit in the business class section like businessmen... sipping champagne as you catch up on some important business work. Welcome back to West Hampstead - "Centre of the known universe".

    1. Does anyone in business class actually do business? They should call it Capitalist Overlord Class.

  3. Welcome home! Wishing you both a quick recovery from a great trip.

  4. It's like your own wee studio apartment on the flight, though the neighbors are very close!
I can imagine Olga was thrilled her dad's were home.

    1. Exactly! I loved being able to close my little pod door and feeling like I had some privacy.

  5. Home again! So soon! That was a whirlwind week. Or years, I expect Olga would say.

    1. I always wonder about her perception of time. Does she have much awareness of the time we were gone, or is she just glad we're here now? Hard to say.

  6. Glad you got back safely and had a good trip, Steve!

  7. It's good to be home after a trip. I've never seen those pods on a plane. Pretty cool. If that's business class, what does first class look like...a small suite? My granddaughter's boyfriend's cat is named Ozzie and has pretty much the same coloring.

    1. We didn't even see First Class, which was to the left as we got on board. Those people are so fancy we're not even allowed to look at them.

  8. Business class! My dream to have a bed on a plane.
Olga, Dave, and Steve are all very happy I'm sure. Glad you had a good trip.

    1. It did feel very luxurious! I can't see us making a habit of it, but if I were a millionaire I would.

  9. Welcome home Steve and Dave! Traveling is fun but I find that coming home after is also lovely. Especially if one has an Olga waiting. I hope you're enjoying a slow, drowsy jet lagged day.

    1. It was very drowsy, for sure! Fortunately all I really had to do is unpack and do laundry.

  10. I'm sure Olga is thrilled to have you back at home. And, you flew home in style. Good for you. Business class is a special treat. As I get older, I yearn for it more.
Hopefully, the jet lag will slip away quickly.

    1. I usually can't sleep on a plane either, but I did this time! Being able to lie flat makes all the difference, at least for me.

  12. Yes. All is now right with the world and you and Dave have the satisfaction of knowing that his parents are all the better for your visit. And, quite frankly, so am I.

    1. And so are we! It was good for everyone involved to get back during this crucial time. I think Dave is going back at Spring Break to help clear his parents' house in Michigan.

Business or first class is the way to travel , I am convinced!

  15. Business class is the only way to go on a long flight. Comfort is key and you and Dave look quite happy toasting your successful trip.
Ozzie looks like the king of his castle. Beautiful kitty.

  17. I love business class! I flew it from Seattle to London and it was the best investment ever. I felt semi-human when I landed! Glad you're home and that Olga welcomed you so warmly. My cat doesn't always. She gets quite snippy.

  22. I was in biz class once and boy, wish I could do it every time! Love the pods -- they didn't do those back in 2009! I bet Olga was thrilled. Welcome home!

  23. Someday I look forward to upgrading my airline seats. I'm sure they would make traveling by plane much more enjoyable than being cheek to jowl in the slaughter cattle class. But with four, sometimes five people, in our group when flying these days, it is much harder to justify the expense.
