Autumn Cemetery Visit

Olga surprised me yesterday by ginning up the energy to go to the cemetery. We hadn't been there together since August, and frankly I wasn't sure we'd ever go again, so I was glad for the opportunity. Usually we set out for a walk and she turns around at or near the top of our street, ready to come home.

And not only did we get all the way to the cemetery, we walked the entire thing -- not just the back half like last time. The old girl was having a good day!

The area that was thick with green hogweed in July is now relatively bare (above), the hogweed having died back for the year.

It was a fairly unremarkable walk, but as I said, I was happy that it happened at all! The cemetery itself is pretty timeless so not much had changed there -- just the slow revolution of the seasons.

I didn't even bring a tennis ball this time, and though there was no squirrel-chasing, there was definitely squirrel-watching. She seemed to have fun. Look at that dog grin!

She is still sound asleep as I write this. I'm hearing lots of snoring.

Otherwise, not much happened yesterday. I read about 50 pages of "Bleak House," which is slow going at first, but now the plot's beginning to pick up.

I just opened my e-mail and found 28 spam messages, 13 of which were from the Democratic party or the Harris campaign. Can I just say that I am SO READY for this election to be over? It feels like it's been going on forever, doesn't it? I realize I may not be happy with the ultimate results -- and it's inexplicable that the race remains so tight -- but still, I am ready to move on.

  1. These recent political seasons have been surreal. Hideous and surreal. And now that we know how much damage Trump did in 4 years, it’s frightening to think of what he’d do if given the chance again. So, I’ll focus on a great day with Olga.

  2. Here in Germany, political parties are not allowed to address people personally by using their personal data such as email addresses unless specific and explicit consent has been given. Most of the campaigning we get here is on TV, on placards and by representatives of the parties setting up stalls in the pedestrian zone of town centres on a Saturday morning where they engage passers-bys in conversation and hand out leaflets.

Not surprising that Olga is been having a sleep-in after her long walk yesterday!

  3. Enjoy Olga's good days with her. She is such a happy dog

  4. Looking back to the immediate past, I would say that President Biden left it too late to resign. There was no time to have a proper Democrat contest between possible candidates such as Gavin Newsom, Pete Buttigieg and yes - Kamala Harris. Instead, she was given the ticket unopposed.

Oh and "Good girl Olga! Well done!...Here, have a squirrel-flavoured snack!"

    1. I think I could have gotten excited about Pete Buttigieg as a candidate. Alas, I'm not excited about ANYthing (or anyone) in this election.

  5. With UK elections followed by USA ones we have had months of politics, and like you we are sick of it all, they do live in a very different world to us. Glad to read Olga had a lovely walk and day yesterday, small treasures to keep us smiling.

  6. I'm hoping for good results in November. I do not believe polls.

I love that sweet bouquet and Olga's smile and then her feet. That says it all.

  7. I love that photo of Olga's tired toes. I can't wait for that bloody election to be over either. trump and his bullshit have been going on for over a decade now. Time for it to end.

  8. Good for Olga! The old girl still has some adventuring in her. And I'm sure that squirrel-watching can be just as satisfying as squirrel-chasing and really- same results.

  9. I don't put much trust in polls. I'm doing my bit with campaigning though. For the best qualified candidate in history.
I'm impressed that Olga was able to enjoy that long outing. No wonder she's sleeping now.

  10. I hear you about the emails. I get around 10 a day. It's crazy. I also agree about how tight the race is. It makes no sense to me.
It's good to hear that Olga had a good walk up to the cemetery. I'm about to go for a walk myself.

  11. I'm glad that Olga had a happy walk in the cemetery.
I would just block those emails now if you don't want to see anymore. Since I already voted, now all we can do is wait and hope for the best. Less than a month to go...

  12. I am also ready for this election to be over. At the same time, I am sure that even if tRUMP loses (please, oh please....) he will not be gone, not really. America will only be finished with DJT when we get a congress and a house that is not being run by people who still take phone calls from him and 'do his bidding'. After we get that mess cleaned up, we need to take a look at the supreme court. It's going to be a long process, and quite honestly, I don't see myself voting republican again in my life time.

  13. that cemetery is such a lovely place. nice little nosegay of roses.
my spam blocker grabs all those political emails so I don't have to deal with them. I know the trad press keeps claiming it's close with their polls but I wonder how accurate those polls are. so many people no longer have land lines and they don't answer unknown calls on their cell phones, like me.

  14. Good girl! happy pup!
I am not anxious for the election to be done with- I fear the results. Let's just stay here in limbo because what shall we do if the worst happens? Easy to say"just leave" , harder to do in fact.

  15. It's so good to see Olga enjoying herself. Your comment about the hogweed made me think of how many plants have animals in their common names.... goat weed and duck weed are two I regularly see. (then you have all the "banes" and "worts"!)

  16. Sweet Olga is smiling and one happy girl. Exhausted, but happy.
Yes, we will all be glad to see election day. I'm still hoping for the best.
I've only seen one tiny DT sign in MA. My neighbor a previous hard-fast DT fan no longer supports him.

  17. I'm ready for the election to be over but alternately terrified--either way. Yay for Olga taking a walk!

  18. Yay for Olga (and you!)

I'm also ready for this election to be over, but I will be DEVASTATED if T wins. Maybe I've drunk the Koolaid but I'm really afraid for the future of our country if he wins. If Harris wins I know there will still be violence, but there will also be the rule of law.

  19. Spam seems to be a problem at the moment. Yesterday morning there were 132 emails in my spam folder. It has been at least 30 every day for the the last week. Purporting to be from Screwfix, the AA, except they are not, and from all kinds of others with mixed characters in the sender names. I have never opened any of them. Needless to say, if any of these are genuine emails then tough, I just empty the folder. I'm not sifting through all those.

  20. I suppose dogs are like us. There are times when I bodies, or minds, just tell us no, but yesterday wasn't one of them for Olga.

  21. Well, dogs are like people. Sometimes they have good days and sometime very bad.

  22. You go, Olga! There's life in the old girl yet. Treasure these days, and the snores that come after them.

  23. Hooray for Olga having a great day, I hope she has more of them. I'm ready for the US election to be over too, so things can settle down and maybe run smoothly.

  24. I think it would be quite neat to have one's way directed by a dog. Back when I had pets, the dogs always went where we went, not the other way around.

I can already tell you I'm not happy with the results of the election still several weeks away. But I think I am at peace with how I will vote. I just hope the other half of our populous can lose gracefully this time.

  25. Jim and I constantly wonder how did the country get here? How did half the people decide they wanted a dictator who would outlaw abortion, overtime (yes, overtime), free press (not that it's doing its job as of late) and who would use the military to jail his perceived enemies. What could go wrong? I am so despondent over this country.
