Sticker Shock, and the Bat

I think I may be repeating myself with this photo of a car in my neighborhood, but I can't find any evidence that I've blogged a similar picture before. I took this one yesterday, but if it looks familiar, my apologies!

It's an eye-catching way of making one's car stand out in a crowd, anyway. I wonder if the fender was damaged or didn't match the rest of the car, and this was the solution? Like a fancy Band-Aid.

I mentioned earlier that my co-worker Joanna, the other assistant in our library, was leaving her position. Her last day was yesterday, so for the foreseeable future there's now only one library assistant -- me. Joanna's duties will be parceled out between me and the two remaining librarians.

We didn't have a special send-off for her yesterday, because she dislikes attention and inevitably feels obligated if someone gives her a gift or makes a fuss ("Now I have to write a thank-you note!") but we've all told her repeatedly in many ways that we will miss her. Which is true.

How this will affect my own job in the long-term is still under discussion. (And I'm part of that discussion.)

Hopefully I didn't give Joanna a cold as part of my going-away gift. The cold I thought I had Friday and Saturday seemed so mild that I began to doubt I had one at all, but now Dave thinks he's sick, so who knows. I feel pretty much normal, if a little sniffly.

My Halloween bat has made its reappearance over my desk. I realized yesterday I've been hanging this bat up for ten years, at least -- and it's been deflated for much of that time. (It used to be much fuller, sort of football-shaped.) I found it in the supply cabinet at work and it has become my annual tradition.

I'm not going to post the video of Olga scratching around on our bed pillows, partly because it seems weirdly intimate to show her on our bed with Dave walking around in his pajamas and our laundry on the chair in the background, and partly because it only captured her scratching for a few seconds (and believe me, it is a much lengthier process). I'll try to make a better one.

But this is the end result. We put that striped pillow in the foreground on the bed especially for her, so she wouldn't nest in our own pillows, but of course she doesn't like to use that one. She does run our lives, that dog.

  1. Ha! The striped pillow is for Olga’s use. As if! We do the same thing for the cats. And they just laugh at us. That shot of her is so sweet. I love that bat. Hope things transition smoothly at work.

    1. If Olga could laugh, she'd be laughing too, for sure!

  2. That's Olga's role to be Queen of all she rules. Hope all is well in the library.

    1. We're in a time of flux in the ol' library, but things are basically fine.

  3. Of course Olga doesn't like that pillow, it doesn't have yours or Dave's scent on it. I like the bat.

    1. Yeah, I wondered about that -- she might be comforted by our pillows. Or maybe I'm flattering myself. Ha!

  4. Is that a black cat on the bed with Olga? You never mentioned him before. No wonder the Russians claim that your apartment smells of fish.

  5. Of course Olga is the queen of the house! Which is as it should be!

  6. I get it! Shirley and Izzy run our lives too. That's why I've been up the last two mornings before 5:00 AM!

    1. Oh, I'm up between 5 and 6 every day because Olga is raring to go!

  7. The car looks interesting but my mind goes to, 'What happens when we try and sell it?'
I love Olga's face; as for the pillow she wonders why she gets a different one than her two dad's so she'll just take yours.

  8. Although our yellow lab/golden retriever mix wasn't allowed up on furniture, I was always fascinated to watch the nesting process he went through before lying down, even if there was nothing but tile beneath him.

    1. I could not even imagine trying to keep Olga off the furniture. I don't think we'd ever succeed with that campaign!

  9. Charlie had to sleep with me last night because he's had diarrhea and got my hubby up three times the night before. There was the obligatory turning around three times and then he plops himself, almost on top of me, and he's not light. This went on for awhile until we both had something that was comfortable. Olga looks very contented, if somewhat smug.

    1. Dogs like to have contact in the night, I think -- it's reassuring to know the pack is with them.

  10. I don't remember seeing the car.
Steve, aren't you normally a bit sniffy when out in public?

  11. That car looks like the end of the day at the factory. Is there any chance of a promotion at work, or some such change, I wonder. This may be classified information, not looking for an answer.

    1. There was a chance for movement -- if not a promotion -- but as you will read in the subsequent post it didn't work out.

  13. I love how Olga is in charge. Just let women rule the world - ok?

    1. I wish! I tend to think we'd have a much more reasonable world -- depending on the women, of course. (Kari Lake, maybe not.)

  16. Such a sweet photo of Olga. I love your fat bat. It's perfect for the season. That car with the stickers is amusing. I can't imagine doing that to a car.

  17. her pillow doesn't smell like you. at least that's the conclusion I've come to because Minnie is the same. she has her own pillow right next to mine but she only lays on it if I'm laying on my pillow. otherwise, she lays on mine. dog!

I rather like the stickered fender.

  18. Your dog is a lovely creature.
Someone told me recently that people do - or used to? - name their cars and I remember my parents giving our first car a name (the little yellow one - it was a beige VW beetle) and I wonder if the owner of that sticker car has a name for his car? Sticky?

    1. Sticky is as good as anything I can come up with! My HS girlfriend named her car David, which I thought was very strange. I never named a car until the Honda FIT I had in New Jersey before we moved to London. I called it Florence.

  19. My cat loves pillows too, mostly sitting on them when she has every couch and chair for that already. She is the Queen. I'm glad you're part of the discussion about your job; it's not always the case.

  21. Our pets are family members, and they all love their creature comforts. Olga looks very cozy having her nap. My dog loves the loveseat and has deemed it his own. When a guest inadvertently sits there, Ceasar squeezes in. I explain it is Ceasars couch. Good thing we have other chairs and couches....for guests and family.
Everybody loves Halloween and your bat adds to the fun.
I am glad you will have a discussion about the re-distribution of workloads to accommodate one less librarian. I wonder if this is a temporary arrangement until a new librarian is hired to replace Joanna.

    1. Funny how dogs continue to assert their ownership of their territory. Olga does the same when people sit on her couch -- she squeezes in between them!

  23. Re the stickered car: do you suppose he or she put them all on at once or if it started with one and just grew over time? Love your bat, though it should be black, with red eyes. And I thought at first look that Olga had a visitor and was snuggling with him or her.

    1. It looks to me like they're all part of the same (or a few different) sticker kits. So I'd guess they all went on at once. Why, I have no idea!

  24. That car fender doesn't look like a bunch of stickers, but it looks more like a type of cling wrap or some such thing that looks like a bunch of stickers!
Olga really likes that pillow with a black pillowcase on it ... is the case silk?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I know -- they DID do a really good job applying the stickers evenly! No, the pillowcase is definitely not silk. We're not that fancy. :)
