Back to Work
The climbing hydrangeas are looking properly autumnal.
It's pouring rain outside as I type. As always, I am loving the sound, from the sanctuary of my warm, dry bed. I have to get myself up in short order because we return to work today. Weird to think this was my last October break!
Otherwise, there's not much to report from yesterday. I literally spent the whole day on the couch, archiving my photos and reading "Tomorrow, When the War Began," a dystopian YA novel set in Australia about the country being invaded by an unnamed military force. Six teenagers on an overnight hike in the wilderness return to find their parents gone and their town occupied, and become a force of resistance. It sounds silly but it's pretty good. We have the whole series in the library and I'd never heard of it before I worked there, but apparently it was a big hit when it first came out back in the early '90s.
Dave and I are watching "Boots" on Netflix and really liking it. It's especially appealing because it pisses off Pete Hegseth.
I have forgotten Tomorrow When the War Began. I'll have to look it up and read it again, It was made into a movie also I think, or maybe a tv series?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it's been adapted for the screen somehow.
DeleteWe, too, are watching “Boots” and liking it.
ReplyDeleteIt makes me wonder why on earth anyone would sign up to be a Marine, though.
DeleteMe too.
DeleteI swear that I left a comment after your last blogpost but it appears to have been removed. I hope that this one escapes the censorship filter. Maybe one day there will be a biopic of Pete Hegseth - perhaps called "Rabbit in The Headlights" - though I can think of other titles that certainly would merit censorship.
ReplyDeleteHmmm...maybe it's in spam? I'll check. I didn't remove it, I promise!
DeleteI don't think I could manage a dystopian novel right now ...
ReplyDeleteA little too close to home?!
DeleteIsn't life a dystopian novel??
ReplyDeleteThese days, pretty much.
DeleteThere's a lot of dystopia happening around us in the US. No room for more! But there's more hope than before. Back to work already?
ReplyDeleteOctober break is notoriously short -- normally just two days, though we got three this year.
DeleteThat book sounds oddly prophetic. Hopefully -- not! Have a good work week. You're getting pretty close to being able to start to count down the days (I think I did it when I got to 250! Maybe you're already there.)
ReplyDeleteI just did a rough calculation and I think I have about 150 workdays left.
DeleteTo be fair, what DOESN'T piss off DUI Pete???
ReplyDeleteHa! Neo-Nazi tattoos, I guess?
DeleteThat book sounds a lot like Red Dawn. I wonder if the movie was based on the books?
ReplyDeleteSimilar idea! "Red Dawn" came out about ten years before the Marsden books. Maybe it inspired him!
DeleteI agree with The Bug. I immediately thought about Red Dawn.
ReplyDeleteFunny, I didn't think of "Red Dawn" at all but it is a very similar story.
Delete"Boots" looks pretty good. I'll check it out.
ReplyDeleteI hope your reentry into the library is gentle and relatively easy.
You'll like "Boots," I think, though the toxic masculinity of the military gets a bit fatiguing.
DeleteThanks for the book and movie recommendations. I'm always looking for advice on those!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I hope they're useful!
DeleteYou can spend weeks archiving photos.
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of different archiving methods -- portable disc drives and online via Flickr. I upload to Flickr continually and archive to the disc drive once a month. But yeah, it's a never-ending task.
DeleteAll The Best This Week Brother Man
ReplyDeleteYou Got This ,
Cheers
Thanks, T!
DeleteIt's always tough to get back after a break.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet in some ways it's nice to resume the routine.
DeleteI had not heard of "Boots" but if it pisses off PH, I'll need to watch it. I watched all but the last two episodes of "The Diplomat" last night. I'll have to finish it tonight.
ReplyDeleteI hope you were able to stay dry on the way to work.
We haven't started the latest season of "The Diplomat" yet but it's on our list!
DeleteI've been binge-watching The Witcher series on Netflix ... pure fantasy with goblins and elves, witches and lots of magic! LOL The new season starts on the 30th ... I'll be watching! It is quite the break from reality!
ReplyDeleteI too need a break from reality...
DeleteOh, I haven't seen that! Might be a bit too much fantasy for my taste.
DeleteWe started watching The Lowdown with Ethan Hawke. Anything that pisses of Hegseth must be good.
ReplyDeleteI've heard good things about "The Lowdown" too. We'll watch it eventually.
Delete"Boots" is new to me but I do have Netflix at least. I can give it a try. Your last fall break, what a weird feeling. Retirement is on the horizon!
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed, for better or worse!
DeleteJust think, once retired you'll no longer be transitioning back to work after a holiday.
ReplyDeleteI'll look for Boots, it sounds good.
Hard to believe I'm really stopping work. I don't think it will feel real until it happens.
DeleteI miss watching a tv series with someone 🥲
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to share viewing experiences, though Dave falls asleep a lot of the time!
DeleteCodex: catching up. Your trip looked great and the seagull Pic is something I've seen on winning wildlife exhibits.
ReplyDeleteIs it even enjoyable to run around so many places and not slow down to take them in?
Sculpture gardens were lovely.
We enjoyed it. I don't think either of us felt pressured, or unable to do what we wanted to do.
DeleteI been watching the old dark shadow soap opera.
ReplyDeleteWow! Where are you seeing that? I didn't even know it was available to watch!
DeleteAnything that pisses off Whiskey Pete is a good thing!!
ReplyDeleteI agree! We need to send even more "woke" his way!
DeleteI found old 1960s Anne Francis detective series online that's all I can stomach at the moment. I hope your return to school is easy. Enjoyed your photos.
