Back to Work

The climbing hydrangeas are looking properly autumnal.

It's pouring rain outside as I type. As always, I am loving the sound, from the sanctuary of my warm, dry bed. I have to get myself up in short order because we return to work today. Weird to think this was my last October break!

Otherwise, there's not much to report from yesterday. I literally spent the whole day on the couch, archiving my photos and reading "Tomorrow, When the War Began," a dystopian YA novel set in Australia about the country being invaded by an unnamed military force. Six teenagers on an overnight hike in the wilderness return to find their parents gone and their town occupied, and become a force of resistance. It sounds silly but it's pretty good. We have the whole series in the library and I'd never heard of it before I worked there, but apparently it was a big hit when it first came out back in the early '90s.

Dave and I are watching "Boots" on Netflix and really liking it. It's especially appealing because it pisses off Pete Hegseth.

  1. I have forgotten Tomorrow When the War Began. I'll have to look it up and read it again, It was made into a movie also I think, or maybe a tv series?

    1. I'm sure it's been adapted for the screen somehow.

    1. It makes me wonder why on earth anyone would sign up to be a Marine, though.

  3. I swear that I left a comment after your last blogpost but it appears to have been removed. I hope that this one escapes the censorship filter. Maybe one day there will be a biopic of Pete Hegseth - perhaps called "Rabbit in The Headlights" - though I can think of other titles that certainly would merit censorship.

  4. I don't think I could manage a dystopian novel right now ...

  5. There's a lot of dystopia happening around us in the US. No room for more! But there's more hope than before. Back to work already?

    1. October break is notoriously short -- normally just two days, though we got three this year.

  6. That book sounds oddly prophetic. Hopefully -- not! Have a good work week. You're getting pretty close to being able to start to count down the days (I think I did it when I got to 250! Maybe you're already there.)

    1. I just did a rough calculation and I think I have about 150 workdays left.

  8. That book sounds a lot like Red Dawn. I wonder if the movie was based on the books?

    1. Similar idea! "Red Dawn" came out about ten years before the Marsden books. Maybe it inspired him!

  9. I agree with The Bug. I immediately thought about Red Dawn.

    1. Funny, I didn't think of "Red Dawn" at all but it is a very similar story.

  10. "Boots" looks pretty good. I'll check it out.
I hope your reentry into the library is gentle and relatively easy.

    1. You'll like "Boots," I think, though the toxic masculinity of the military gets a bit fatiguing.

  12. You can spend weeks archiving photos.

    1. I have a couple of different archiving methods -- portable disc drives and online via Flickr. I upload to Flickr continually and archive to the disc drive once a month. But yeah, it's a never-ending task.

  15. I had not heard of "Boots" but if it pisses off PH, I'll need to watch it. I watched all but the last two episodes of "The Diplomat" last night. I'll have to finish it tonight.
I hope you were able to stay dry on the way to work.

  16. I've been binge-watching The Witcher series on Netflix ... pure fantasy with goblins and elves, witches and lots of magic! LOL The new season starts on the 30th ... I'll be watching! It is quite the break from reality!

    2. Oh, I haven't seen that! Might be a bit too much fantasy for my taste.

  18. "Boots" is new to me but I do have Netflix at least. I can give it a try. Your last fall break, what a weird feeling. Retirement is on the horizon!

  19. Just think, once retired you'll no longer be transitioning back to work after a holiday.
I'll look for Boots, it sounds good.

Is it even enjoyable to run around so many places and not slow down to take them in?
