The Green Woman
I haven't done a random photo post in a while, and I don't have much to say today. Yesterday was pretty uneventful for me, given that all the teachers were in conferences and there were very few kids around. So let's see what pictures I can scrounge up from the last month or so that I haven't already blogged.
First, I came across this little garden ornament in Canonbury a couple of weeks ago. The light was just right!
I took this when preparing to get into bed one night. Doesn't it look like breaking waves full of baby sea turtles? I bought these bedsheets in Florida when we were there for Christmas a couple of years ago.
Some fun stickers found on Finchley Road.
And finally, I have resisted blogging these pictures for weeks because I didn't want to be seen as making fun of this woman, whose outfit I found pretty mind-blowing. But then, she was wearing it proudly so who am I to judge?
There's a whole story here: She was very agitated and yelling at the traffic. Right after I took these photos she got on a bus and went in the same direction I was walking, and about five minutes later I passed her again standing at a second bus stop farther down the road, still very agitated. For some reason she'd gotten off the first bus and was now waiting for a second. It was all very mysterious.

I can see why you were reluctant to post the pictures of the Green Lady, but you took them anyway. Maybe she lost a bet? (And when it comes to public transport, I often feel like yelling at it - and at regular traffic - but I desist, knowing it wouldn't make a difference to either; instead it would only impact myself negatively.)
ReplyDeleteI often take pictures of characters I meet on the street. Yeah, I would love to know the story about why she's dressed like that. She may believe she looks fantastic. Who knows?
DeleteYou always find some eye popping scenes for your blog.
ReplyDeleteThe lady in green seems to have been in some distress? I found that last image of her to be quite sad.
She was coughing in that picture, probably from yelling at the traffic! But yes, she was clearly distressed (more angry than sad).
DeleteLet's leave aside the unflattering outfit. For all we know she may have gone to a fancy dress party - as a frog who lets it all hang out. After all, frogs do have big bellies.
ReplyDeleteWhat you describe is worrying. There are numerous possible explanations for her behaviour. None of which make for comfortable reading/dwelling on. Me being me, I'd probably have approached her. It's what I do when I feel someone is in distress. The Angel despairs at times. He fears that one day his mother will come across someone who'll rearrange my face despite my best intentions. So far, so fine.
On a general note: I do like how you and your camera document the mundane, the strange, the bizarre, the beautiful ... - on your daily travails. A photo tells a story. Helped along by our imagination.

She was behaving very aggressively. There's no way I would have engaged with her. My inner urban caution bells were going off.
DeleteThere is a dreadful unhappiness in her, the clothes tell you so of the things that she wants. Poor lady she is alone in London reaching out. Good eclectic photos, capturing life along the way .
ReplyDeleteI agree, her overall demeanor is definitely one of unhappiness.
DeleteI thought the green woman was going to be like green man. But not quite. I do wonder about it all. Great positioning with “reformer” pilates sign in background. The dog statue is charming and the photo of the surfing sea turtle sheets is, too.
ReplyDeleteSo did I!
DeletePerhaps she was heading out to a fancy dress party in her asparagus costume, hoping to get it on with a carrot. I agree with you about the perfect light on the doorstep dog ornament.
ReplyDeletePoor soul. One of those mysteries that will probably never be solved.
ReplyDeleteI misread Reformer Pilates as Performer Pilates!
I will spend the day erasing those last two photos from the inside of my brain!
ReplyDeleteThat lady is definitely disturbed. I wonder if she was made to get off the first bus. Sad.
ReplyDeleteI'm still of a generation where tight fitting clothing was kind of scandalous to wear and not allowed in schools. I remember feeling like I was looking at pornographic material just seeing Jane Fonda in her workout clothes on the cover of a VCR tape jacket! We've come a long ways since those days.
ReplyDeleteBy your description, that woman was probably of need of some psychological counseling services. Sadly, those are harder to get these days on this side of the pond.
You have so many books in you -- all you need is a publisher. The photo book of "Street Scenes," The "Walking London" book and of course the saga of the Russians and Mrs. K, which I still think has a shot! I love your city sights -- though yes, that woman may well have issues. But a brilliant sense of color.
ReplyDeleteFor whatever reason, the Green Woman is making me think of The Green Lantern. Maybe she's a superhero!
ReplyDeleteYou have a good eye for a composition, I love seeing your photos ... even green lycra woman. She obviously has a story to tell.
ReplyDeleteI thought the same as The Bug's comment. She's a superhero.
ReplyDeleteAll right- I'm just going to say it- I think Green Woman's sense of style is terrific! So sure, the outfit isn't what we might call traditionally flattering but the scarf shows forethought and an ability to accessorize which, as Clairee in Steel Magnolia tells us, is the only thing separating us from the animals.
ReplyDeleteI do suspect she may have problems but it is not even possible for us to imagine what her life is like.
She is, however, a bright spot of color in what can be a drab world.
The young woman reminds me of the parakeets. I wonder if she has a mental illness. She reminds me of Katie's roommate.
ReplyDeleteI think she was profoundly upset that the pilates studio wasn't open yet! That may well be her exercise outfit!
ReplyDeleteLove the little bird sticker, wonder if it's the same person who does the cats. Looks like the same style. The woman is very green and barely contained but I can't help but admire anyone who has the nerve to wear outfits like that in public.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very strange and very green outfit. I love the little bird on the back of that sign and those sheets are great. You can go to sleep floating on a wave.
ReplyDeleteCity streets provide lots of photo opportunities. The woman in green must have a story. She does draw attention and yelling at traffic is a big red flag. We can only hope she stays safe.
ReplyDeleteYour turtle/wave sheets are great.
The artist creating cat and bird stickers is prolific. The simple line drawings are brilliant.
I would suspect mental illness for the green lady. I do love those sheets! It's time for me to go to flannel. Last night it was in the 30s.
ReplyDeleteThe waves/ sea turtles? Are you referring to the second or third photo.
ReplyDeleteWhen people are yelling at things like traffic, or any other inanimate target, it indicates a very disordered thought process. That strange behavior can switch to something much darker and more dangerous with no warning at all.
I can see why you resisted publishing her photos, there is clearly some mental illness present there, the agitation & yelling at traffic are dead giveaways. I hope there is help available for her, poor soul.....
ReplyDeleteI adore that duvet cover, where did you buy it from
ReplyDeleteI like the garden ornament. It would look nice in the area where we've buried several of our dogs.
ReplyDeleteIT' pretty haRD TO NOT TAke an unflattering shot of this gal. You tried...both back and side.
