The Steak Seduction
I just ordered my morning coffee at Starbucks and it came in a paper cup, contained within a second paper cup, contained within one of those little cardboard rings that's supposed to protect my fingers from heat. And with a plastic lid. Seems like a lot of material for one cup of coffee.
Although Dave's parents' trailer has WiFi, it doesn't have a very good coffee machine. So I still find it easier to drive the short distance to Starbucks in order to blog.
So yes, they own a mobile home here, but they don't live in it. At least not anymore. Dave's mom and dad have both had health issues that necessitated their moving to an assisted living center, where they eat and sleep and spend most of their time. That's why we're staying in the mobile home, which frankly I love, because it's in one of these little sun-blasted waterfront retirement parks with hyper-neat landscaping and plastic flamingos and palm trees. We've joked about moving here ourselves. At least, I think it's a joke.
When I took my morning walk yesterday I found this sphinx moth (I think?) resting on the paved street. It was covered with dewdrops and looked like it had been there a while, but I didn't want it to get squashed, so I picked it up and moved it to a planter in front of someone's house. It was surprisingly hard to move. Those little feet can really cling. Hopefully when it warmed up and dried off it was able to move around a little more easily.
We ran errands yesterday morning, mostly preparing for today's Christmas dinner. There were originally plans for a roast and potatoes and all that stuff, but at some point it was decided that lasagna was the way to go -- easier to make and store, and using only one dish! So we bought lasagna supplies and also some new shrubs for the mobile home, where the landscaping suffered in Hurricanes Helene and Milton last year. We bought three Hibiscus, a Lantana, a ti plant, an Ixora and something I don't remember ever seeing before called a Clusia. I think the latter might actually become a tree someday, so we have to be careful where we put it.
Dave and I will be planting them today and tomorrow, and his sister will care for them, since she's staying for the next several weeks.
This insanity was parked outside a restaurant at the shopping center. I'm sure it's not road-worthy. It's just for display. There's a whole nativity scene inside the van.
Last night, Dave's parents came over (they still drive) and we ordered pizza and had a leisurely evening full of mobile home park gossip. For example, we heard about the female neighbor who solicits men in the park with offers of meat ("I have steaks and my husband isn't here; would you like to come over?"). Grace Metalious, eat your heart out!
After dark I took my nighttime walk. Today Dave and I have lunch with some friends from my years living in Sarasota (1994-2000) and then it's lasagna time!

Hilarious to think of your retiring to Dave's parents' place! I can't quite see it.
ReplyDeleteWell, you never know!
DeleteI like the top picture. So Floridian and the lighting so pale and gentle. How resilient spindly palm trees have to be to survive storms and high winds. Unlike Boud, I can picture you and Dave living out your days in that mobile home. After all, what is the colloquial name for folk who live on such sites?...Yes, that's it!
ReplyDeleteThat's the beauty of palm trees -- they look so delicate and yet they're some of the toughest plants out there.
DeleteI don't know which I love more, the Christmas Van or the Frozen Florida Home!
ReplyDeleteI'm partial to the frozen house, myself.
DeleteI think my vote goes to the Xmas van it looks intriguing.
ReplyDeleteThe moose (elk? deer?) head on the front is especially impressive!
DeleteReindeer!
DeleteVan and sister bug are hilarious! Compared to your walk-abouts in London, this area would quickly become quite boring, I'd guess.
ReplyDeleteI wonder! The density of people isn't as high but I'm seeing a lot of stuff to photograph as I drive around town. It would mean more driving and less walking, though.
DeleteQuestions asked and answered. The van and bug would be more than worthy for the art car parade that happens in Houston every year. That first picture would make a perfect Florida postcard.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they do enter it into any parades? I bet so!
DeleteWould you see vans and VW's decorated for Christmas in London?
ReplyDeleteNothing compares in MA. Were they part of a Christmas parade?
The mobile home seems like a good option for sunshine and warmth during the winter months. The gossip at the mobile home park must keep the neighbors entertained. Ha ha...No need for Match.com when you have steak!
Your first photo of the beach and sole palm tree is great.
I've seen decorated cars but never THAT decorated. Yeah, this seems like an appealing place to stay in the cooler months. I'm not sure I'd want to be here in August.
DeleteHa! The steak seduction. I was always more direct than that. Why waste a good steak?
ReplyDeleteHa! Didn't you ever see "9 1/2 Weeks"?
DeleteOh, I forgot about that!
DeleteI LOVE THE VAN!!! (Sorry for shouting). And I might be ready for some lasagna myself - you're the second person I know who has had it for their Christmas dinner.
ReplyDeleteApparently this lasagna-for-Christmas thing is really trending this year. It IS much easier, I must say.
DeleteThat van is amazing!
ReplyDeleteAn old woman seducing men with steaks. I'll have to remember that, should I ever had to seduce an old man:)
Well, who knows how often it works. But she's making the offer, at least!
DeleteAll right. That is the BEST Christmas...display?...I've ever seen. I want it.
ReplyDeleteI totally understand sort of, kind of wanting to retire in one of those little communities, especially if it's on the water! And ooh, the gossip must be so juicy. Like a well-cooked steak?
My goodness!
Funny how both the first picture you posted and the last just scream "Florida!" to me.
You guys are good to get Dave's parents' place all re-landscaped. Isn't it fun to buy tropical plants?
Yes, the beauty of this place is all in the location. To be right on Sarasota Bay is really amazing. To think mobile homes in places like this used to be dirt-cheap forty or fifty or more years ago. Now they're $300K!
DeleteI love that nativity van with all the bling. Sounds like you are having a good time, Im enjoying reading your posts.
ReplyDeleteIt's a change from the foxes in West Hampstead, that's for sure! :)
DeleteNothing like a good mobile home park seductress, one wonders if she uses Rib Eyes or New York strip steaks.... Re the VW van & Bug, I am at a loss for words.
ReplyDeleteHa! Yeah, I didn't get details on the cuts of meat involved!
DeleteWe live near a manufactured home community, which is huge. Their homes, in many cases, are larger than ours. Lasagna sounds good, big dinner is just too many dishes.
ReplyDeleteMy mom was always so prejudiced against mobile homes when I was a kid, but I see the appeal.
DeleteThis sounds like a good, fun time. I love that you bought bushes for Dave's family and the lasagna dinner sounds much better to me than roast beef and such! That van reminds me of my neighbor's yard before they aged out and it was too much! Beavis and Butthead, the Holy Family, and Charlie Brown all shared space (among others!)
ReplyDeleteThere are definitely people for whom "more is more" when it comes to holiday decorating! (You like your decorations too, I know...:) )
DeleteOh my gosh, that van and the car behind it are unbelievable. Makes me wonder if it's there for the holidays or a permanent installation. I'm leaning toward holidays but wondering where it would go after that.
ReplyDeleteI love the gossip story. I wonder how often that ploy works. Lasagna sounds perfect.
Yeah, I assume it's temporary, but where do they park it the rest of the year? They must have a garage somewhere.
DeleteBlimey! You really do know how to party!!
ReplyDeleteWe do not faff around here in the Sunshine State!
DeleteThis causes me to contemplate the inevitable reality series being developed about American retirement parks, lol.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised it hasn't happened already?!
DeleteThis Update Is Chalk Full Of Local Culture
ReplyDeleteWay Cool ,
Cheers
Trying to give you a flavor of life in a retirement community!
DeleteI'm reading a book where they just had lasagna for Christmas! I'm a bit flabbergasted at that van display.
ReplyDeleteI never knew this was such a popular option, but I can see why.
DeleteLasagna is quite popular in our family for Boxing Day.
ReplyDeleteDon't know what to say about that van! It's different!
All the best Jan
Oh, that makes sense -- to have it as an easy meal when everyone's sick of Christmas dinner leftovers.
DeleteThat van and the trailer home are both eye-catching...Enjoy your lasagna! Is June still in the hospital?
ReplyDeleteShe is, but she's doing pretty well. She's sitting up and she's scheduled to have her second procedure on Monday, we think. (The day I'm writing this reply.)
DeleteI love lasagna/lasagne; it's our traditional Xmas Eve meal. This year we had two kinds. My mom's tomato based one and then a vegetarian white sauce one with Pepper Jack cheese--both delicious. Lantana is one of my favorite plants! They're only summer ones here.
ReplyDeleteI should try to grow some lantana in England. I don't see why it wouldn't work with some protection from the cold, except that the sun may not be strong enough to sustain it in winter.
DeleteI suppose kids might enjoy the spectacle, but to me Insanity is just that.
ReplyDeleteWell, it promotes the restaurant's brand, right? It certainly made me notice! I didn't eat there, though.
DeleteSounds like you two are enjoying yourselves, Steve!
ReplyDeleteWe are indeed!
DeleteI agree the coffee protection is overdone. Buy an insulated reuseable cup and ask them to fill that. I love the Christmas display with the Kombi and the lights on the house are wonderful. Is that the mobile home you are staying in?
ReplyDeleteNo, it's not ours -- it's down the street. Ours is only minimally decorated. :)
DeleteI have two palm trees like this in my yard, I'm so worried that one day they'll collapse on someone.
ReplyDeleteIf they're healthy they shouldn't collapse. Even if they died I don't think the trunks would fall. They're pretty strong. I've known dead palm trees to stand for a long time, though the tops usually fall off.
DeleteThere’s quite a soap opera happening on that neat as a pin waterfront! Nice that you’re sprucing up the plant scape for your in laws. This whole post just evokes Florida in my mind, starting with the pink flamingoes.
ReplyDeleteIt really is quintessential Florida here!
