Moai

I passed this house on Tuesday when I was walking around the neighborhood near my dentist's office. The Easter Island moai on the windowsills caught my eye right away. I wonder if this person has any connection with Easter Island (aka Rapa Nui) or if they're just fascinated, as many of us are, from afar?

And now I'm on Spring Break! None too soon, either. I got annoyed at my boss yesterday when she made another late-afternoon request and I realized once again that it really is just time for me to go. I am so done with that job.

I had a series of weird dreams last night involving some of my coworkers. I had scheduled time on the calendar to do some kind of AI training, and there was discussion about that, and then suddenly I was at a dining room table and I moved a centerpiece and a pair of hummingbirds flew out. "Awww, they built a nest there!" said my co-worker Martha. And then I woke up, and wondered what on earth I'll dream about when my three remaining workdays are over. Hopefully less calendar scheduling or AI and more hummingbirds.

Pam Bondi is finally out at the Justice Department, and I can't say that's surprising. (I've written before about my two degrees of separation from her.) That is going to be an impossible job for anyone, because Trump and the MAGAts want to prosecute people who have done nothing wrong. Ever since the chants of "Lock her up!" he's made promises to jail Democratic leaders, and darn it, the law just won't cooperate. It will be interesting to see if a new attorney general is any more successful in bringing charges, never mind making them stick.

Meanwhile, I hope Bondi writes a book, because that could be entertaining.

I'm looking forward to a restful day and making more of my way through "Flashlight," which I haven't touched since last weekend!

  1. That very deliberate way (exact spacing and facing) of the moai is indeed intriguing. It is not like people's average windowsill where potted plants, a bird feeder and decorative clutter accumulates over the years, more or less happening by chance than by plan.

In all the 39 1/2 years since I have started to work (first at my hometown's library) I have dreamt of work very rarely, but nearly always on the last night of a longer holiday before returning to work the next morning.

Enjoy what will hopefully really turn out to be a restful day! I know it will be for me. Good Friday and Easter Monday are bank holidays in Germany, so we have four-day weekend. And today, I only want to do my ironing and cleaning, and in the afternoon go for a nice long walk before I'll start on a somewhat adventurous trip to O.K. tomorrow.

  2. I love the Moai on the windowsills!
Your boss sounds ridiculous. How childish to make a last-minute request right before spring break. What does she think she’s proving when you’re such a short timer?

    1. She just cannot stand to have me sit down at my desk, when all my assignments are done and I temporarily have no kids in the library, and break out a newspaper. She will invent a task in order to keep me busy.

  3. One of our late Prime Ministers used to be referred to at times as the Easter Island Statue. Yes, there was a resemblance to your photographed moai.

The dog killer should be the one up for prosecution. Maybe one day she will face court charged with crimes while in public office. Her performance at the recent congressional hearing was a disgrace.

    1. There is something very politician-like about the square jaws of the moai!

  5. I have a Moai head pot with a grass in for hair, I call him Kirk as his chin looks just like Kirk Douglas,

  6. Did BBW send you off to the Science faculty for a long stand? I would call it sexual discrimination. Maybe an old boyfriend failed to remember her birthday or something. Maybe her daddy didn't love her.

  7. I am hoping Bondi lands in jail or at least something happens to her for not doing her job and releasing the Epstein files. The fact so many bad people get away w/bad things in this country is demoralizing. Are those heads attached somehow? I would worry they'd fall off and bonk someone on the head.

    1. The Epstein thing has been a complete debacle. But I think Trump is angrier that the prosecutions of Comer and James fell apart, and Hillary is still walking free!

  8. I wouldn't have liked a request right before spring break myself! Pretty soon, you will be free of all of that!

    1. It seems petty, but it's both the timing and the invented nature of the task that annoyed me. She feels like she has to keep me running all the time.

  9. The windowsill statuary has perfect timing - it is Easter on Sunday, after all!

    1. Oh, I didn't even think of that! Could they be a cheeky method of decorating for Easter? I'll have to walk past again some time after the holidays and see if they're still there!

  10. Good riddance to her but of course she will be replaced by someone worse. I have no respect for her at all.

    1. Nor should you! I also think her replacement is likely to be worse.

Every time you tell us another thing about your boss, it makes me wonder who your replacement is going to be and how they're going to handle the inanity and insanity. Good luck to them!
I can't help but wonder what Bondi thinks of Trump now. She really should write a book.

    1. Well, when the replacement comes she'll have a couple of advantages. She will have been hired by my boss, and thus will be part of her chosen (rather than inherited) team. And she won't have any knowledge of what things were like before -- life under the current boss will be her only reality. So she may be happier than I am!

  13. My last day of retirement was spoiled as the vice principal came and took my keys away. I had many things to get out of the school. I borrowed somebody else's key.

  14. The Bondi thing kind of feels (like Noem) "be careful what you wish for" -- it could be worse! I had work dreams last night -- and I retired in 2013! I like the moai sculptures.

  16. When I left the workforce, it took me probably a month or more before I fully adapted. It wasn't a simple, brief transition so you have my best wishes in the upcoming days.

I'm not surprised about Bondi. My only surprise has been how stable his cabinet has remained this term versus his first term which felt more like a revolving door. As you said, it is definitely a thankless task to have to work under this Current Occupant.

    1. Yeah, I expect there to be a period of transition. I remember when we first moved here and I wasn't working the first year, I felt very aimless. But I also enjoyed myself!

I think Trump has worked very hard to keep the cabinet stable so he wouldn't be seen as fickle.

  17. I'm afraid that someone even worse than Bondi will be put in place. I know, that's hard to imagine! The finish line is in sight, yay!

  18. What an interesting find those Moai are. I'd love to know the story there.
Yes, Bondi is out. A celebratory drink was in order. However, just one drink because what comes next could be even worse.

    1. Yeah, I'll save the real drinking for 2028 when the Republicans will be OUT!

Maybe the hummingbirds signified you flying away from that job.

  20. Maybe your boss doesn't really have a concept of time? Like she genuinely would be confused about how the timing of her request is rude? I don't know - maybe she's doing it on purpose. Very annoying!

    1. She calls herself a workaholic and indeed, she cannot set the work aside. I think she's surprised that I can. But I work to live, I don't live to work.

  22. Your boss will never get the kind of work you accomplish from anyone else. I really do not like the way she is squeezing you for more work right to the end.
Bondi likely felt, working for the Felon meant fame and fortune and now she's out. Who's next?

    1. I think Bondi definitely allowed her ambition to transform her as a person. I can't understand being ambitious to that degree.

  23. Go out from your job on a high note. Be better than your boss, who isn't intelligent enough to appreciate you. I wonder if Bondi will trash the felon or remain loyal. I'm betting on loyal.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Sounds like she'll be loyal for a while, at least, because she's headed to some new role in private industry that Trump seems to be connected with.

  24. Your boss really is trying to wring as much as possible from you. Shame on her. Does Bondi even know how to write?

  25. I wonder if she wants to just do everything herself! She may get her wish if she keeps kicking people around like this. Breathe. She'll soon be history. I wonder about the Easter Island heads, too. Be sure and let us know if they go away after Easter week is done.
