Here's my obligatory photo of Phoebe, the flamingo sculpture at the heart of the Tampa airport. I didn't try very hard with that picture -- I was sitting down and literally just turned around and snapped. But then I thought I should give it a bit more effort, so I got this:
That black smudge reflected in the silvery ceiling is me.
I was at the airport well ahead of time, to turn in my rental car -- always a relief -- and to have a leisurely coffee after navigating security. When I got to the gate I was surprised to see some of the Tampa gate agents set up a table complete with balloons and cake. That was followed by an announcement recognizing the 41-year relationship between the Gatwick flight crews and Tampa airport staff. I asked around, and it turns out that British Airways is ending its direct flights to Tampa from Gatwick on the 24th, and the following day they will move to Heathrow (which apparently involves staffing them with a different crew, for reasons I don't understand). I take these Gatwick flights all the time, but I can't say I'm sorry about the change -- Heathrow would be more convenient for me.
Apparently the Tampa airport is hosting several events like this one to say goodbye to all the Gatwick crews. Once they'd all had their cake, the passengers were offered slices too -- so I got some free cake. It wasn't bad, though it had that commercial frosting that can be a little cloying. (Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, right?)
The flight itself was uneventful. I watched "Against All Odds," which I happened to have downloaded on my computer, and plowed through a couple of New Yorkers. It was the emptiest flight I've ever taken from Tampa, I think. I got to stretch out across four seats for some shut-eye.
Oh, before I left Tampa, I went to Shelly's diner down the street from my stepsister's, where I found this car in the parking lot. I can only think of one person fitting that description. (The side windows said, incongruously, "Go Knicks.")
And Dave sent me this picture of Bailey, which cracks me up. When I got home this morning she wasn't yet back from her walk, and when the walker dropped her off about 15 minutes later she was out of her mind with excitement. She tackled me like a linebacker. I felt very appreciated!
The Murano glass owl vase that I bought in Avon Park made the journey safely and is now on the windowsill in our dining room.
I'm going to do my best to stay awake all day, but we'll see!

Black Smudge sounds like a new comic superhero or more likely an anti-hero. Thanks for taking us on your Florida trip. Glad you made it home safe again Steeeeeve!
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine what some barista would put on a cup if I said my name was Black Smudge!
DeleteI have owl vase envy.
ReplyDeleteThey are available on eBay and Etsy, but each one is different! Many seem to have a black top rather than blue.
DeleteNice reentry. And it's good to know Bailey's got a dog walker.
ReplyDeleteYes, Bailey is getting plenty of exercise, thank goodness. (She's got two walkers if you include me!)
DeleteNothing like the Welcome Home from a pet!
ReplyDeleteLove the owl.
She was so excited. It was hilarious.
DeleteThat vase is stunning. So is Bailey. Glad all went well. Sorry you had to make do with store-bought cake... for free.
ReplyDeleteBailey is either stunning or stunned, I'm not sure which!
DeleteWelcome back!
ReplyDeleteLove the owl vase - gorgeous find.
Thank you! Yeah, the minute I saw that vase it was mine.
DeleteWhat a welcome home!
ReplyDeletePS: British Airways' Gatwick flights are operated by BA Euroflyer, a subsidiary of BA. All the BA mainline flights go from Heathrow - different company, different crew.
Oh, THAT's interesting! I had no idea! Even flights from Gatwick to North America?!
DeleteOutstanding And Welcome Home - Dig That Eyeball Capture - Love Dave's Photo - And Totally Righteous Pictured Painted From The Linebacker Greeting
ReplyDeleteKeep Walking ,
Cheers
She was like a cannonball, fired straight at me!
DeleteWelcome home. It is always nice when you can stretch out across a row of seats on the dreaded overnight flights.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I've only been able to do that one other time and it was memorable!
DeleteAw. I always love a picture of Phoebe. She's a stunner, isn't she?
ReplyDeleteI've never had free cake at an airport.
And I'd like to say that for all of the people who think that every person in Florida is a huge MAGA POS, your picture of that car proves them wrong.
Oh, Bailey. She's so happy that Daddy Steve is home.
I've never had airport cake before either. There's a first time for everything! I think the person driving that car around Tampa is quite courageous, though Tampa is a relatively liberal enclave.
DeleteWelcome home. I guess Bailey missed you.
ReplyDeleteApparently! LOL
DeleteYou're certainly having fun with that camera! Love the flamingo closeup
ReplyDeleteThese were actually all taken with my phone!
DeleteYour owl is spectacular. No wonder you bought it! And I love that pic of Bailey and am thrilled that she welcomed you back so enthusiastically. I hope she's that enthusiastic after the spaying! What a great idea to share the cake. That's really lovely. And especially love the tight shot of Phoebe!
ReplyDeleteIt was very nice of them to share the cake, I agree. And it's ungracious of me to complain about the frosting!
DeleteThat glass owl is beautiful. Welcome home!
ReplyDeleteThanks and thanks!
DeletePhoebe has big, beautiful eyes to watch over the airport. The photo is superb. I wonder if she's recording as well.
ReplyDeleteNice flight. Luckily the empty seats provided you some extra room and comfort on the plane.
Bailey has her whole family again and she clearly is a very happy girl.
The owl vase was a good find. The colors are great and it shines with the sunlight.
Yeah, the vase is especially nice in the sun -- not something it was getting in the shop in Avon Park, where it was tucked back in a dark shelf.
DeleteI value my life so I would not ride in such a vehicle. I refused to even apply a bumper sticker. Dogs always know how to make you feel appreciated!
ReplyDeleteI agree -- I wouldn't do that to my car either!
DeleteI love your artistic take on Phoebe and your glass owl is fantastic. Interesting that they are moving the BA flight to Heathrow which is a much busier airport. I can't imagine why the crew needs to change but I suppose they know what they are doing. I would loved to have seen Bailey's excitement at seeing you. Nothing beats a strong canine greeting.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with those remarks on the car but I'm surprised to see them.
Interesting what JayCee said above -- that would explain the need for a crew change.
DeleteWelcome home, Steve! The way our pets show us how happy they are to see us is one of the peaks of having a pet, isn't it. I really missed that after my last cat died of old age.
ReplyDeleteGood job the glass owl survived the flight! You must have packed it really well.
I never unwrapped it after I bought it, so all credit goes to the store owner! She put it in several layers of bubble wrap.
DeleteWe remember Phoebe! How could we not? Best airport sculpture anywhere! Re the ceremony for the Gatwick based crews: Airlines domicile their crews by location, ie, Gatwick, Heathrow, Hartsfield Jackson/Atlanta, etc, so if Gatwick/Tampa is being discontinued and replaced with Heathrow/Tampa those flights will be flown by Heathrow based crews.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info on the airline crews. I never knew that! I hope the people who staff those flights will easily move to others.
DeleteI love that second photo! And the owl - I can see why you couldn't resist. And that car is just fabulous. But I have to disagree - the icing is the WHOLE POINT of bakery cake. Ha!
ReplyDeleteI got a piece with flowers, and I actually couldn't eat all the icing! Sacrilege!
DeleteI'm glad you got such a warm welcome home from Bailey!! She may hate you tomorrow! (just kidding, though I doubt she'll be happy)
ReplyDeleteI think whatever ire she feels toward me will be temporary!
DeleteThat car says it...Nothing like the love of a dog...and that glass is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThanks, e! Sorry I didn't get to see you this time around.
DeleteI love the glass owl, and I am glad it made it back home safely. The message on the car rear window is a hoot. The first letter of each line is a letter from tRump's name. Perfect. I am sure Bailey is glad that you are home!
ReplyDeleteOh, duh! I didn't even notice that!
DeleteThat glass owl is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Thanks, Jan!
DeleteGlad your flight went smoothly and you are home safe and sound.
ReplyDeleteLove the owl vase, Steve!
Thanks, Ellen!
DeleteI can see why you couldn't resist that owl vase. It's a beauty! (and unique) What a wonderful greeting from Bailey! She missed you. Sometimes commercial cake frosting hurts my teeth; it's so sweet.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I could have done with about half as much frosting -- and I LIKE frosting.
DeleteWhile I like the sentiments scrawled on the car, the owner is putting it at risk of damage by a MAGATT.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great photo of the flamingo's eye, and I love the glass owl. It was a good find.
The car is quite old. Maybe they're inviting damage so they can write it off with insurance!
DeleteThere's no better welcome than the one you get from a dog. Bailey looks sweet in that picture. I like the owl.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
It's true. She was laughably enthusiastic. I was afraid she would barely remember me.
DeleteAnimals can show great affection for their family.
ReplyDeleteOne of the chief joys of having animals!
DeleteSafe to say that Bailey missed you then. That glass owl vase is very lovely.
ReplyDeleteApparently she did. Thanks, re. the vase!
DeleteHope your bulldozer does not meet up with that owl. Welcome home!
