Orchids and More Kiwis
One of the rescued yellow-green orchids, from that batch I found in someone's yard waste several years ago, is giving us another round of flowers. These have been very productive orchids. One or two of them died but the rest are still plugging away. Overall, though, my orchids seem to be in a bit of a slump -- I've only seen one other that's forming a flower stalk. Maybe it's just not the season for them to do more than rest.
Remember the peculiar bottle cap I found with a kiwi bird on it, the one that turned out to be from Old Mout cider? Well, I bought the full set that I found on eBay (they were practically free -- something like £2). I have no idea what I'll do with them but I thought they were amusing. The only one I don't quite "get" is the one at top left -- is that bird supposed to be dancing? Is the hat a costume reference I should understand?
There was a lot of this going on around here yesterday, and there's probably going to be more today. It's raining outside as I write so I doubt I'll be out much. I'm looking forward to a relaxed day at home.
When I got up yesterday I gave the flat a quick once-over because our management company had asked to inspect it on the 14th. I said no -- because I'd be in Nottingham -- and rescheduled them for the 15th. But they never got back to me with any confirmation and they didn't show up, so I have no idea if or when that's happening. They've started coming by once or twice a year, more than they ever used to, I guess to make sure we're not up to no good. Maybe they've had bad experiences with other tenants.
I've started reading journalist Thomas Mallon's New York diaries from the 1980s and '90s, and they seem like they're going to be pretty interesting. I'm always interested in reading other people's diaries. (I guess that's why I like blogs!) At the beginning, he's just moving to New York City from upstate, and as a former New Yorker myself, I identified so much with his experiences of searching for an apartment -- the viewing from which you literally have to RUN to catch a taxi back to the real estate office before any other competing tenants -- and his sense of wonder at stepping out of his door into the vibrant city streets and thinking, "I live here!" There was a time I never wanted to leave New York, and I felt very settled there, but life had other plans. Of course, London's pretty great too, but I miss New York's verticality and density.
I made another appointment for Bailey to be spayed, on the 19th (next Monday). We'll try it again! It's been more than four months since she was in heat, so I don't see how waiting any longer will be of benefit. Next week is going to be busy -- I also have appointments with a dermatologist and a dentist, and we have tree work scheduled in the garden on the 23rd. Never a dull moment!

The bottle tops are quite fascinating, and the orchid flower is pretty in its soft colour.
ReplyDeleteI think a flat inspection more than once a year is intrusive and I'd be surprised if it is legal.
Do be careful to not get appointments mixed up, with Bailey seeing a dermatologist and dentist, and you...well.
I should look into how often a flat can be inspected. They DO seem to be coming around a lot, maybe because they've also done some work in the flat (redecorating last January) and wanted to follow up on it.
Deletedefinitely a dancing kiwi...and it looks like a woven hat...made from harakeke?(NZflax)
ReplyDeleteYes, both that hat and the gardening hat look to be made of straw of some kind.
Deleteor maybe a bucket hat - they are popular headgear here - it's possibly some Dad-dancing.
DeleteMaybe the Old Moat cider caps are aimed at us who have retired and suggest what we should be doing with ourselves.
ReplyDeleteHa! I should take hula lessons?
DeleteSounds like the rest of the month will be busy. Those bottle tops are interesting. There must be a way to get the story behind each one. I thought maybe the first guy is drunk and wearing a lampshade. Bailey has the right idea. I was up way too early. think I need a siesta.
ReplyDeleteI thought about drunkenness too, but I doubt they'd put that on the bottle top. These alcoholic beverage companies are always reminding us to "drink responsibly."
DeleteIf you drill little holes in the bottle tops, you will be able to make yourself a stylish necklace. I think that the kiwi in the top corner is looking up to the skies and flapping his little wings in a futile attempt to fly. However, like the rest of us he is earthbound. This has brought a tear to my eye.
ReplyDeleteThe world is full of sadness,YP.
DeleteThe bottle tops are very unusual, I will have to look out for them. Perhaps you could purchase a small frame from a charity shop, take the glass out and then mount the bottle tops on some black fabric in the frame, it would definitely be a talking point. The Old Mout website is a brilliant way to find out all about the cider, but I could find nothing out about the bottle tops ... at least I know how to pronounce Mout now though. :-)
ReplyDeleteThey WOULD be great mounted in a shadowbox frame -- that's a good idea!
DeleteHopefully you will be able to get Bailey spayed this time. She looks adorable sleeping away!
ReplyDeleteI hate to put her through it. I feel so guilty. But I know it must be done.
DeleteThe three older orchids I have in my flat have not flowered in a long time, but the new one I was recently given as a thank you from my neighbour for looking after their cat and rabbits is blossoming away as if there was no tomorrow, looking very pretty with small pink blossoms.
ReplyDeleteThe top left kiwi looks as if it's wearing a bucket hat, like old school rappers often wore. So who knows, the bird may be rapping to the beat, while the bottom left one is doing the Hula.
I have been living in my own flat for 23 years now but if I remember correctly, a landlord has to give a reason for wanting to inspect a tenant's rooms. Repairs, or a complaint, or something like that. There must be similar regulations in the UK.
My impression is that as orchids age, they flower less and less often. Which makes sense. Here I think an annual inspection is allowed but I'm not sure they're supposed to be here more than that. They DO give us a reason, but it's not always something initiated by us.
DeleteI had a closer look at the hat on the top left kiwi and it looked like a depiction of a flock of birds flying, so I thought that perhaps the kiwi was trying to fly??
ReplyDeleteHmmmm...I'm not sure about the flock of birds (you mean the pattern on the hat?) but it's possible he's trying to fly. Seems like the "shaky lines" would be beside his wings, then, and not at his hips.
DeleteGet a frame from Poundland and a small piece of burlap or other fabric and mount them. Those bottle caps are very cool -- they'd be fun to display in a kitchen. You could probably pull it off with as small as a 5x7 so it wouldn't take much room. And the inspection is odd, considering you two have lived there a long while and what would be the problem? You let them know if you have an issue. Go figure.
ReplyDeleteYeah, this mounting idea is a good one. I'll have to look into it!
DeleteI got a little orchid from a student of mine back in 2016 and it flowers every year two or three times, a small miracle. 🌸
ReplyDeleteGood luck with Bailey !
Wow, that's quite a few flowering cycles! Mine usually flower once a year at most, and sometimes after a few cycles they stop entirely.
DeleteI love the bottle caps but don't understand the idea behind them ...
ReplyDeleteThat said, the orchid is such a pretty color.
the bottle caps depict typical NZ things
DeleteMaybe there's a special NZ dance that involves wearing a straw hat like that, and that's what's depicted in the top left image?
DeleteI really didn't understand New York, until I spent a little time there. London is a city where I instantly feel at home.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first came to London I was underwhelmed -- I much preferred Paris. Little did I know I'd eventually live here!
DeleteBetter get the spay done quick before she goes into heat again! Just what you wanted to hear.. For someone who wondered about retirement, your days are certainly interesting.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's the thing -- I don't want to wait too long!
DeleteAbout New York and London. This Yorkshire woman felt totally alienated in London, could never have lived there. First sight of New York, and I felt at home. It even smelled right. But then I was following in the footsteps of my mid 19th century forebears who settled in New York upstate, entering exactly where I did, by ship.
ReplyDeleteOh, interesting! So you probably did feel more of a kinship with New York than with London. That's understandable.
DeleteI think in most apartment contracts I have signed, management only had to give me notice that they would be inspecting on a particular day. They didn't have to ask for permission. So perhaps they inspected it while you were in Nottingham.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, but they gave me the option to reschedule and I tried to do so. It's possible that they just didn't get that request and came in anyway.
DeleteWe have a yearly inspection so Management can see if anything needs repaired or replaced!
ReplyDeleteOrchids do have a cycle they follow for blooming! When they stop blooming altogether, they probably need to be repotted!
I am rooting for a successful spay day for Bailey!
Well, that's ostensibly the reason our landlords inspect as well -- but I really think it's more about making sure we're not trashing the place! I've tried repotting our orchids but that doesn't seem to make a great deal of difference once they get to a certain age. I find after several years they just don't want to bloom again.
DeleteFingers crossed that Bailey can be spayed next week.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed indeed!
DeleteI have nothing to contribute here except that your shot of the orchid is sublime.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mary. :)
DeleteThe bottle caps are adorable. I'd consider mounting the bottle caps in a shadow box frame arranged exactly as you show in this post. Alternatively, a narrow single file arrangement might be a good option.
ReplyDeleteYour yellow orchid is beautiful. My white orchid is blooming too.
It is raining here too, and I just came in with my two dogs soaking wet.
Yeah, I like this shadowbox suggestion. I think I'll pursue it!
DeleteCute bottle caps and top left is definitely dancing, same wiggly lines as the hulu kiwi. That orchid is gorgeous, I love that soft yellow color. Everytime you post a picture of your blooming orchids it makes me want to get some. So far I've resisted.
ReplyDeleteWell, they're not expensive -- and I think you can get them at Home Depot or Lowe's. Go ahead, take the plunge!
DeleteI like the bottle caps, but like you, don't know what I might do with them. Perhaps glue them into a box frame and hang it on a wall somewhere? I hope Bailey's spaying happens this time.
ReplyDeleteYeah, framing seems to be the best option.
DeleteThose bottle caps are cute; could you put them in a frame and display them on a wall? I hope the spaying gets done, finally! I can't keep orchids alive; I wish I could.
ReplyDeleteMost people water orchids too much, or let them sit in water, and that will kill them in no time flat.
DeleteThose orchids are beautiful and as always I'm so impressed that you have such luck caring for them. Those Kiwi bottle caps are very cute but like you I don't get that one. It does look like it should be dancing but the hat is strange.
ReplyDeleteI think there must be some specific dance in NZ that is customarily done while wearing a straw hat? No idea!
DeleteMy blog has never been much of a diary/journal... at least not in recent years. (it used to be) Tomorrow's entry will be a slice of my life, though. Be warned, it will contain some sad news.
ReplyDeleteI like the kiwis and I think the top left one is dancing/twerking.
I did see your post and I'm sorry about your news. :(
DeleteLove That Bailey Photo - What A Bird She Is - Have A Wonderful Weekend
ReplyDeleteStay Rowdy ,
Cheers
We often call her "Bailybird," actually!
DeleteMy daughter rents over here and they have quarterly inspections, which is ridiculous. When I rented (over 20 years ago) I would always make sure that the real estate agent had plenty to look at - generally things that needed their attention.
ReplyDeleteSo I just googled me and it regurgitated my bio and said I did a "daily journal" (hahahahah) but also found my blog facebook page (which isn't linked). I do wonder if it is because I am obviously at both places and it did a lazy look at my own history!
Depending on how unusual your name is, I guess it just found you in both places. Quarterly inspections seem insane!
Deletecutest photo of Bailey yet!
ReplyDeleteI admire you ability to bring plants back to life and to keep them in life! I have killed every orchid I ever had, I bought food for them, watched you tube videos, bought all the things to keep them happy, yet ...dust to dust.
The bottle caps are adorable. Stick them to round magnets and there you have and instant refrigerator door gallery.
Oh, magnets! That's another good idea!
DeleteI think my weekly cleaning could be classified as a once over.
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with that!
DeleteGood luck regarding her spay. She sure is cute!
ReplyDeleteThanks, e! I will keep everyone posted!
DeleteWe don't inspect. Of course, if we were to see signs of a problem, we'd make arrangements to do one.
ReplyDeleteI guess you live close enough that you can kind of be aware how things look, though -- hence your ability to see signs of a problem.
DeleteBeautiful orchid! I wouldn't like a management inspecting my house interior. But maybe it would force me to clean more often.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's why I hope they didn't come in while I was in Nottingham. Dave was here by himself, and he's not normally much of a cleaner!
DeleteI think the first Kiwi is wearing a bucket hat and doing the "Chicken Dance". He has the stance of a preschooler dancing in this way. In NZ all children are required to wear a hat when outdoors at preschool or school.
