Dragon and Crown

The Thanksgiving cacti are still blooming up a storm. The salmon one has opened (above)...

...as have the white/pink ones. And as you can see, the dark pink plants are blooming profusely. So I'm happy to get flowers out of all four of my cacti this year.

Some of you may wonder why I'm not calling them Christmas cacti, which is probably the name we all learned when we were younger. Apparently true Christmas cacti have a slightly different leaf shape and bloom later. Here's a short video about how to tell them apart. Most "Christmas" cacti sold in stores are actually Thanksgiving cacti, according to the experts.

Mine seem to bloom even earlier than is typical. As someone pointed out last year, they're more like Halloween cacti. Maybe that's because I live so far north, with rapidly decreasing sunlight in the autumn. Just a guess.

Not much happened around here yesterday. I took Bailey out for a walk in the afternoon, to the cemetery. Let me just say, I am thrilled that her dog walker is starting again today. She is wearing me out, she's such a wild thing! She slipped her harness at one point, lunging after a squirrel, so I am assessing new harnesses on Amazon. Hers came from the shelter and it has a tendency to loosen, so I need one that's more secure.

After I refitted her harness and tightened it up, we walked back along Mill Lane. Bailey stopped at the door to the vet's office, as if she wanted to visit again. You'd think she'd be terrified of the vet at this point, but no! An older man walking past me said, "That's a smart dog!"

Then he said, "Hey -- how many rings does a marriage have?"

Oh, great, I thought. Dad jokes.

"I don't know," I said.

"Three," he responded. "The engagement ring, the wedding ring, and the suffering!"

When I told Dave this story later, he said, "That guy has been waiting days to be able to spring that joke on someone."

Once again, I came across a box of stuff set out for the taking on someone's garden wall. I took these two little dishes, featuring a dragon and a crown.

As you can see from the back, they're Limoges porcelain -- specifically a pattern designed by RΓ©gis Dho for Philippe Deshoulieres. I think Chambord is the pattern name, but I'm not sure. They look to me like something swiped from a hotel or restaurant in France or Monaco. There's a listing for some identical dishes on Etsy -- she wants £60 for them, but I've seen similar ones listed for less elsewhere. I just thought they were kind of cool.

Today is my birthday. I am the big six-zero today. I can't believe I'm 60 years old, but you know, in a way it's such a relief. I've written before, and fairly recently, about the AIDS anxiety I felt as a young gay man -- I was always afraid I might not make it to 40, much less 60. So I'm pretty happy to be here, wrinkles, age spots and all!

  2. Happy birthday. I didn’t like the sound of 59 when I was there. 60 is a nice number. So many people we knew didn’t make it. In my neighborhood, they leave out broken lamps and old shoes. Yours leaves Limoges! Dave’s so right about that guy with the dad joke. Our Thanksgiving cactus doesn’t have a bud in sight.

    1. I wonder if your Thanksgiving cactus needs more light? It seems to react to sunlight and the changing light patterns in autumn. Just a guess.

My " salmon" cacti are flowering too......I have 2 nice size plants from the cutting you sent years ago. Thanks..... I love them.

    1. I'm glad they've grown so well for you! My one salmon plant is still a tiny, struggling thing, though it seems to be doing better these days than it was.

  4. Wishing you a very happy birthday, 60 is a milestone. The AIDS situation when it started was so grim and worrying. My dear cousin and his long term partner lost two close friends to AIDS, thank goodness there are now treatments. I hope you enjoy your day, and as my wise old Grandma used to say "Every wrinkle tells a story"! Regards Sue H

  9. Happy Birthday!
That is a nice bit of Limoges porcelain.
Chambourd actually has interesting connections. The chateau is up in the Loire valley. Henri of Aquitaine, pretender to the throne of France in the 1800s became the Comte de Chambourd and one of the best most fragrant damask roses was named for him in the 1850s

  12. Happy birthday! You're into a nice decade. I found each decade better than the last, so I hope that for you. If Bailey doesnt wear you down to a stub! My dad had an endless supply of dad jokes, which as the youngest, who'd never heard them before, I was subjected to.

Your cactus plants are putting on a beautiful display of color and flowers. Having blooms from Halloween to Christmas sounds good to me.
The plates are wonderful. Dragon-crown makes a great image. Nice find.

Happy birthday Steve. I'm glad you missed out on AIDS, it was horrible, truly devastating.

  18. Ah, you're a mere babe. I love how Pixie said it- still got milk in your mouth.
It's like the universe gave you a sweet little birthday present- "Here's your Limoges, Steve! Keep doing such a good job!"
If you think dad jokes are bad- let me tell you about grandad jokes. No. I'll spare you.
So of course I had to check and see what sort of holiday cactus I have which I now know is the most common, Thanksgiving cactus. No buds on it yet either. Thanks for the informative video.

    1. It's funny how they sometimes bloom and sometimes don't. I have no idea why that is, except like I told Mitchell above I think it has something to do with sunlight.

  19. Happy Birthday! 60 was a hard one for me because that's when I suddenly started to visually age...a lot. It resulted in the year of the selfie when I was 64. You might remember that. Anyway, it was a way to accept my new face and it worked. I quit obsessing about it after that.

I laughed more at Dave's comment than the joke.

I know how you feel about the 60th. I've been having similar feelings about my recent birthday. How is it possible that I'm 80. My brain has no idea I'm that old but my body is constantly reminding me. Enjoy your day!

I love it that she stopped at the vet. And that is a funny joke. Lame but funny! And lovely little dishes. I use my little tiny dishes all the time. Keeps me honest!

  25. Wishing you a very Happy Birthday, as my Granny used to say age is only a number. Bailey must have worn you out if you're glad the dog walker is taking over. We just have a cat, Miss Sheva, who has been pushed out the door for some exercise before it gets dark and the fireworks start. Xx

  26. My oldest students are now in their early 60s (I feel ancient) so 60 sounds young to me. Happy Birthday to you! Young dogs are so energetic; they don't just sedately walk. They tug and chase--hard to control them as an "older" person.

Thank you for the cactus video, I think all the ones I see here must be Christmas ones, since she said Thanksgiving ones are pollinated by huming birds and we don't have those in Australia.
A more secure harness will be good, Bailey is a strong girl.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I wouldn't think the pollination would matter much, because nursery plants are all artificially propagated by horticulturists (unless they're escapees growing in the wild). So you could have Thanksgiving cacti too --- and probably do, I'd bet.

My sister will be 60 in January, and my husband in May; I have another 1 1/2 years in my 50s. I think we're in a good age bracket right now, where life can either take an entirely new direction or we can finally feel like we have "arrived" in our lives, without the turbulence of youth and not yet the troubles of old age.
