The Thanksgiving cacti are still blooming up a storm. The salmon one has opened (above)...
...as have the white/pink ones. And as you can see, the dark pink plants are blooming profusely. So I'm happy to get flowers out of all four of my cacti this year.
Some of you may wonder why I'm not calling them Christmas cacti, which is probably the name we all learned when we were younger. Apparently true Christmas cacti have a slightly different leaf shape and bloom later. Here's a short video about how to tell them apart. Most "Christmas" cacti sold in stores are actually Thanksgiving cacti, according to the experts.
Mine seem to bloom even earlier than is typical. As someone pointed out last year, they're more like Halloween cacti. Maybe that's because I live so far north, with rapidly decreasing sunlight in the autumn. Just a guess.
Not much happened around here yesterday. I took Bailey out for a walk in the afternoon, to the cemetery. Let me just say, I am thrilled that her dog walker is starting again today. She is wearing me out, she's such a wild thing! She slipped her harness at one point, lunging after a squirrel, so I am assessing new harnesses on Amazon. Hers came from the shelter and it has a tendency to loosen, so I need one that's more secure.
After I refitted her harness and tightened it up, we walked back along Mill Lane. Bailey stopped at the door to the vet's office, as if she wanted to visit again. You'd think she'd be terrified of the vet at this point, but no! An older man walking past me said, "That's a smart dog!"
Then he said, "Hey -- how many rings does a marriage have?"
Oh, great, I thought. Dad jokes.
"I don't know," I said.
"Three," he responded. "The engagement ring, the wedding ring, and the suffering!"
When I told Dave this story later, he said, "That guy has been waiting days to be able to spring that joke on someone."
Once again, I came across a box of stuff set out for the taking on someone's garden wall. I took these two little dishes, featuring a dragon and a crown.
As you can see from the back, they're Limoges porcelain -- specifically a pattern designed by Régis Dho for Philippe Deshoulieres. I think Chambord is the pattern name, but I'm not sure. They look to me like something swiped from a hotel or restaurant in France or Monaco. There's a listing for some identical dishes on Etsy -- she wants £60 for them, but I've seen similar ones listed for less elsewhere. I just thought they were kind of cool.
Today is my birthday. I am the big six-zero today. I can't believe I'm 60 years old, but you know, in a way it's such a relief. I've written before, and fairly recently, about the AIDS anxiety I felt as a young gay man -- I was always afraid I might not make it to 40, much less 60. So I'm pretty happy to be here, wrinkles, age spots and all!

Happy Birthday! Hope your day is a good one.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteHappy birthday. I didn’t like the sound of 59 when I was there. 60 is a nice number. So many people we knew didn’t make it. In my neighborhood, they leave out broken lamps and old shoes. Yours leaves Limoges! Dave’s so right about that guy with the dad joke. Our Thanksgiving cactus doesn’t have a bud in sight.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if your Thanksgiving cactus needs more light? It seems to react to sunlight and the changing light patterns in autumn. Just a guess.
DeleteHappy Birthday young man!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteHappy Birthday to you! Hope you have a good day...at least it's not raining!
ReplyDeleteMy " salmon" cacti are flowering too......I have 2 nice size plants from the cutting you sent years ago. Thanks..... I love them.
I'm glad they've grown so well for you! My one salmon plant is still a tiny, struggling thing, though it seems to be doing better these days than it was.
DeleteWishing you a very happy birthday, 60 is a milestone. The AIDS situation when it started was so grim and worrying. My dear cousin and his long term partner lost two close friends to AIDS, thank goodness there are now treatments. I hope you enjoy your day, and as my wise old Grandma used to say "Every wrinkle tells a story"! Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of stories to tell -- more and more every day! LOL
DeleteHappy birthday and many happy returns. I hope you will celebrate in style.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteHappy birthday, enjoy your day.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteA very happy birthday Steve. Sixty is the new sixty. 'Ave a good one.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Andrew! "Sixty is the new sixty" -- LOL!
DeleteA good and Happy Birthday Steve.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Thelma!
DeleteWishing you a very Happy Birthday, fellow Scorpio. Enjoy your day.
ReplyDeleteThank you Carole! Scorpios rock!
DeleteHappy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteThat is a nice bit of Limoges porcelain.
Chambourd actually has interesting connections. The chateau is up in the Loire valley. Henri of Aquitaine, pretender to the throne of France in the 1800s became the Comte de Chambourd and one of the best most fragrant damask roses was named for him in the 1850s
Was Henri a descendant of Eleanor of Aquitaine? She's the only Aquitaine royalty I know!
DeleteI can't help it, I like corny dad jokes. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday dear Steve! I hope you have the best day!
I laughed, I confess!
DeleteBailey is likely happy as well to go walking with a younger model! Happy Birthday again!
ReplyDeleteHa! Yeah, no doubt Josh can keep up with her better!
DeleteHappy birthday.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteHappy birthday! You're into a nice decade. I found each decade better than the last, so I hope that for you. If Bailey doesnt wear you down to a stub! My dad had an endless supply of dad jokes, which as the youngest, who'd never heard them before, I was subjected to.
ReplyDeleteI'm feeling the same -- that each passing decade is better than the last. Let's hope the trend continues. I'm glad it has in your case. :)
DeleteHappy Birthday!! Those little dishes are a great find/gift for you!
ReplyDeleteA gift from the universe!
DeleteHappy Birthday! Great find on the wall.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteCongratulations on reaching the big Six Zero Steve! The very same day that our youngest grandchild - Margot - has reached the big Three!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, Margot! Three is just as important as 60! Maybe even more so.
DeleteNov. 2 is a very good birthday to have. :)
DeleteHappy B-day! Today is your day to enjoy and celebrate.
ReplyDeleteYour cactus plants are putting on a beautiful display of color and flowers. Having blooms from Halloween to Christmas sounds good to me.
The plates are wonderful. Dragon-crown makes a great image. Nice find.
Well, the blooms don't last that long. They usually start in late October and run for about a month, I'd say.
DeleteSixty? You've still got milk in your mouth:)
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday Steve. I'm glad you missed out on AIDS, it was horrible, truly devastating.
Oh, come on now, I'm hardly THAT young. :)
DeleteAh, you're a mere babe. I love how Pixie said it- still got milk in your mouth.
ReplyDeleteIt's like the universe gave you a sweet little birthday present- "Here's your Limoges, Steve! Keep doing such a good job!"
If you think dad jokes are bad- let me tell you about grandad jokes. No. I'll spare you.
So of course I had to check and see what sort of holiday cactus I have which I now know is the most common, Thanksgiving cactus. No buds on it yet either. Thanks for the informative video.
It's funny how they sometimes bloom and sometimes don't. I have no idea why that is, except like I told Mitchell above I think it has something to do with sunlight.
DeleteHappy Birthday! 60 was a hard one for me because that's when I suddenly started to visually age...a lot. It resulted in the year of the selfie when I was 64. You might remember that. Anyway, it was a way to accept my new face and it worked. I quit obsessing about it after that.
ReplyDeleteI laughed more at Dave's comment than the joke.
I feel like I've been visually aging for a while, but I'm sure there's worse to come. LOL
DeleteHappy Birthday, Steve. Wishing you many more fabulous years of fun adventures, lots of laughs, good health and much love! xo
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ellen!
DeleteHappy Birthday! 60 is fun.
ReplyDeleteThank you, and I hope so! :)
DeleteI hope you have another great trip around the Sun! I think Bailey is going to keep you a young and healthy 60 year old!
ReplyDeleteHaving a dog really DOES help -- gets me out of the house even more, and keeps me walking!
DeleteHappy birthday! I think it shows that the vet treated Bailey well, so she's not traumatized by them. That's a good thing!
ReplyDeleteYeah, she seems like she actually enjoyed her stay! Maybe they gave her treats.
DeleteHappy Birthday Steve! You got yourself a little birthday gift with two dishes.
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel about the 60th. I've been having similar feelings about my recent birthday. How is it possible that I'm 80. My brain has no idea I'm that old but my body is constantly reminding me. Enjoy your day!
I hope I will learn firsthand what it feels like to be 80, but you never know!
DeleteHappy, Happy Birthday! 60 is good. I hope you have a terrific day. (I never thought I'd hear you say you were getting tired out walking! Bailey must be quite the companion!). I love it that she stopped at the vet. And that is a funny joke. Lame but funny! And lovely little dishes. I use my little tiny dishes all the time. Keeps me honest!
ReplyDeleteBailey is a very purposeful walker -- she is 100 percent invested in everything, and hops from one focus of attention to the next with great rapidity.
DeleteWishing you a very Happy Birthday, as my Granny used to say age is only a number. Bailey must have worn you out if you're glad the dog walker is taking over. We just have a cat, Miss Sheva, who has been pushed out the door for some exercise before it gets dark and the fireworks start. Xx
ReplyDeleteThank you, Gill! We were hearing fireworks last night as well, but Bonfire Night isn't until Thursday, right? They do kind of go all week, though.
DeleteMy oldest students are now in their early 60s (I feel ancient) so 60 sounds young to me. Happy Birthday to you! Young dogs are so energetic; they don't just sedately walk. They tug and chase--hard to control them as an "older" person.
ReplyDeleteYes, exactly -- there's a lot of pulling and running and getting into mischief!
DeleteHAPPY Birthday - and many more
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteHappy, Happy Birthday, Steve!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteHappy Birthday Steve, keep it up, stay on top etc
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sabine!
DeleteHappy anniversary of spinning around the sun!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jeanie!
DeleteHappy Birthday, Steve!! Get that Bailey girl a new harness she can't slip out of. I have a horror of Pat slipping his when a vehicle drives by. I priced some for Fred this weekend and decided he could continue to cram in one too small for him for now.
ReplyDeleteI've ordered two new ones, in the hopes that one of them (at least) will work well for her!
DeleteHappy birthday! And many more. ♥
ReplyDeleteThanks, Elle!
DeleteHappy 60th, Steve! May this be the best year yet, with more to come! Chris from Boise
ReplyDeleteAlso, thanks for that video. I find, to my surprise, that the babies I have (started from cuttings a year ago) are actually true Christmas cactuses! Not sure they're old enough to flower yet - we shall see.
DeleteThanks, Chris, and exciting about your cacti! I hope they bloom this season!
DeleteHappy birthday Steve!
ReplyDeleteXoxo
Barbara
Thank you, Barbara!
DeleteHappy birthday! 60 is a great age to be.
ReplyDelete(The dish on the right is probably an ashtray)
Thanks, Celie! Yes, I agree about the ashtray.

Well, I'll have to contemplate those goals. I've never been a very goal-oriented person. I just kind of cruise along and deal with each day as they come!
DeleteOk , Goal Definitely Wasn't The Correct Word - Think Along The Lines Of Accomplishments - Vacations , Craft , Musician, Volunteering , etc
Delete60! Happy Birthday! 🎂🎈🎉
ReplyDeleteThank you for the cactus video, I think all the ones I see here must be Christmas ones, since she said Thanksgiving ones are pollinated by huming birds and we don't have those in Australia.
A more secure harness will be good, Bailey is a strong girl.
I wouldn't think the pollination would matter much, because nursery plants are all artificially propagated by horticulturists (unless they're escapees growing in the wild). So you could have Thanksgiving cacti too --- and probably do, I'd bet.
DeleteHappy Birthday, Steve!
ReplyDeleteMy sister will be 60 in January, and my husband in May; I have another 1 1/2 years in my 50s. I think we're in a good age bracket right now, where life can either take an entirely new direction or we can finally feel like we have "arrived" in our lives, without the turbulence of youth and not yet the troubles of old age.
Yes, feeling "arrived" is a good way to put it. I feel like I'm about as accomplished as I'll ever be, and that's OK!
DeleteOh I missed y our birthday, I'm sorry!! I hope you had a wonderful day. At 60 you are a mere whippersnapper. :-)
