Fireworks
Bailey and I discovered this mural yesterday, tucked into a corner of a housing estate near Kilburn. It's kind of cool but also kind of creepy. Purple, mottled skin is a little off-putting, not to mention the blue eyeballs, though that's probably supposed to be eye shadow. The whole thing is very "RuPaul's Drag Race."
I worked more in the garden yesterday morning, raking up debris from our tree-pruning experience last month. It's remarkable how many stray sticks and branches are still out there. I'm not a super-tidy gardener but I don't want too much mess. I filled two yard-waste bags, and we already had an extra one full from last week, so we now have our quota -- after they're collected on Tuesday I can do more. I wish I could just rake it all into a big pile and light it on fire like we used to do in Florida, but I'm sure that must be illegal here. (It's unthinkable in any case.)
Many of our neighbors still have their jack-o-lanterns out. This one is pretty amusing -- and quite meticulously carved. I wondered if they'd made this up on their own, but no -- it's a Disney-sanctioned pattern, known as the "Cheshire Cat." Still, they did a good job! Looks like they messed up the right eyebrow, but that's minor.
Considering I didn't even attempt a pumpkin, and haven't for years, I can hardly be critical. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, or something like that.
Last night we got a surprise when a barrage of fireworks began going off across the street. I think they were associated with one of the athletic clubs -- there's a tennis club and a cricket club over there. Probably if I were better plugged in to social media I'd know whose they were. Anyway, I went out in the garden to try to see them (see video) but Mrs. Kravitz's house was in the way, so then I stepped out onto the front porch and got a better view. These were much more intense than anything we experienced the night before, but once again, Bailey didn't seem put off. She barked, but she wasn't fearful.
I see from my right-wing "news" source that some extremists are already peddling the fiction that the American election was stolen. They're trying to cast doubt on the numbers -- for example, they ask how so many more Texans could have voted for Talarico than for Kamala Harris in 2024. (Here's an explainer from a legitimate newspaper.) It doesn't seem inconceivable to me that voters might like Talarico more than Harris; also, a different mix of voters shows up from one election to another. They're also questioning why all the statewide California races broke roughly 53-to-46 percent in favor of Democrats.
So in other words, if results aren't consistent, people must have cheated. But also, if results are consistent, people must have cheated!
Honestly, I shouldn't even be amplifying their absurd claims. Democrats were highly motivated to turn out in these midterms, and Republicans weren't.
And now we have Susie Wiles out (because she's a woman and thus expendable in Trump's White House) and the awful Stephen Miller being elevated. Clearly Trump did not absorb the message of the voters.

"...or something like that". I think the appropriate saying in this particular situation is "People who look like carved pumpkins should keep schtum".
ReplyDeleteIs Mr President brewing fresh electoral challenges about the mid-terms? It seems surprising that he hasn't come up with some ridiculous and baseless accusations already. Instead, he has concentrated on his effing ballroom and even trying to make The Oval Office a national monument in order to preserve his tasteless, tacky adornments that have cheapened the dignity of that room.
And so the fun continues ...
ReplyDeleteNice fireworks!
Gillian Flynn, a blog entry I had made in 2014, Dark Places

Thank you for the firework display, probably the only one I shall see this year.
ReplyDeleteThe dog we had for ten years never worried about fireworks either, we used to get them at odd times thanks to all the second homes around with wealthy people "up from London" (they really were) who would have fireworks when they arrived and again before they left!
If the roles were reversed and your house was blocking Mrs. Kravitz’s view, she’d tell you to move your house.
ReplyDeletePeople who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw pumpkins, either. I used to love carving pumpkins. In Connecticut, I use to carve three big ones for our front steps.
There goes Guy Fawkes for another year. Except the real reason for fireworks is being forgotten and we must carve pumpkins instead of mangelwurzels ;).
ReplyDeleteI carved only one pumpkin in my entire life, helped by my granddad. He died in 1989, and the pumpkin carving happened many years before that; I guess I must have been around 10 or 12 years old. But I remember the "teeth" and how proud I was when I first saw it with a tea light lit inside, and also how sorry to see it caving in and starting to rot not long afterwards.
ReplyDeleteOur cat Lilly sat and watched the fireworks for a while and then slept, so she is not bothered. As for the orange one, he's a narcissi's, he is only interested in his image, the little people do not matter to him.
ReplyDeleteFun fireworks.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone here carves pumpkins, but the kiddies like Halloween.
Fireworks were so fascinating to see when we moved here, but now I don't bother looking.
I don't understand what you are saying about California. I assumed the state would resoundly vote Democrat.
That's amazing artwork. I think the downside to living in a built up area is the limit it puts on watching firework displays for free. We used to have a brilliant view when we lived in Wales, the whole hillside on the opposite side to us used to be alive with firework on Bonfire Night. Here we have roofs and the odd flash and bang. That intricate pumpkin is really well done, I am so basic when I try, there's usually just just two triangle eyes and a smiley mouth.
ReplyDeleteThat purple skin doesn't look healthy at all, and that poor pumpkin with brow issues!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a surprise, election deniers. Why aren't they called what they are? Liars. Whiners. Cheat. I could go on but it would end up being a list of expletives:)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Bailey doesn't get terribly upset with fireworks. Poor Charlie shakes with thunder and fireworks.
The art is appreciated and is disturbingly uncomfortable, unlike drag race, which is art on a different level entirely! . I think that mistaking the eye part for eye balls instead of shadow may have been my mistake. Creepy.
ReplyDeleteHumans fascination with fire and things that go BOOM- must be innate old tribal DNA thing.. Your video is outstanding- Sparkle and shooting stars in the branches, is wonderful.
Bailey's calm during all of that noise like a GD war , is commendable. Cool pooch!
Thanks for the video!
There were voters in the last Presidential election who wouldn't vote for Kamala, because she had not been in the Primaries. There were voters who didn't vote the Presidential race because they didn't like either candidate. Just enough to cause the result. One wonders, if Joe had stepped aside earlier, if the outcome would have been different.
ReplyDeleteThere were voters who wouldn't vote for a woman, however qualified and ready. We'd have a very different country if we'd had Hillary, and Kamala.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter's little dachshund, Dewey, is afraid of fireworks, thunder, any loud noises. He will just tremble and whine with fear.
ReplyDeleteSteve Miller was always working behind the scenes anyway. What an awful man. Hope the lot of them get punished some day.
The mural is creepy with a bit of Marilyn Monroe thrown in. I do like the purple and red choice of colors.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the fireworks video. As all I hear are booms (no color) in the distance which I could do without.
It sounds like you are in full garden Fall clean-up mode. I am too. Mountains of leaves have fallen over the last few days plus it is raining. I can do nothing until the rain stops. If the sun shines on Sunday, it will be a day of mowing to mulch all the leaves.
SM front and center might just be the ticket. "The bigger they are, the harder they fall" comes to mind. Now he's more visible and we are all watching. The Blue wave is on the ready.
No, he did not. But I don't think elevating Miller is going to change anything. He was Deputy Chief of Staff already and already had Trump's ear. In fact it might be a mistake for Miller. Whereas before he was operating in the shadows running things, now he's in the spotlight and you know how badly the spotlight is for nazi vampires.
ReplyDeleteMinnie hates fireworks, the least little pop and she's a shivering panting mess hiding in the closet. She laying in her bed at my feet when I played the video. Didn't bat an eye. Gunfire? Hates it, doesn't react to it at all on the tv.
Personally, I think Trump has checked out on the whole 'being president' thing. He'd rather build ballrooms and arches. That gives the Chief of Staff a lot of power. It feels to me like Satan is now running the government. Democrats will have their hands full dealing with Satan.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the fireworks show. Your video is better than any I saw on July 4th. I wonder if there was a wedding or some other celebration at that sports club. Fireworks for weddings has become a popular thing.
Many years ago, I had the strangest dream in which everyone was purple. I won't mention what I had been smoking the night before. 😉
That tired old rhetoric--is it going to work this time? I certainly hope not. It looks like the Mississippi GOP is fighting the Democrat victory (looks like it anyway) although I haven't heard of other challenges. Alaska perhaps? Miller is terrible and frightens me.
ReplyDeleteYou Londoners have the best graffiti, "The Gateway Pundit." really? You cannot get more delusional or crazy than that bunch. They're right out there with Jewish Space Lasers. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteThose are some serious fireworks!
ReplyDeleteI like what Mitchell said about Mrs. Kravitz and how she'd ask you to move your house if it blocked her view.
So one does wonder- has Trump entirely lost whatever bit of rational thought he may have once had in appointing Miller to the Chief of Staff position or is he doubling down or have the powers that be who have been pulling the strings all along have such power over him that they managed to finally get that Minion of Satan where they want him?
Don't ask me. But as always, just when you think you've seen it all from that administration, you realize that no, you absolutely have not.
We're never going to be free of this horrible administration until he dies. There is a thought in one of the papers that he'll use his money to threaten repubs in the next elections.
ReplyDeleteI would venture to say Talarico got so many votes because he is such a genuine, sincere, sensible person. I'm sure he drew many votes from the republican side.
ReplyDeleteMiller is this administration's "Himmler".
My next door neighbour is a professional mural artist - very talented but actually my least favourite form of visual art; I reckon I like about 1 in a 100 murals. Clearly, I keep quiet about this at home!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you told me what the pumpkin was supposed to be because I thought a spider was coming out of its mouth. Ha!
ReplyDeleteSomeone I follow (Charlotte Clymer) had a hot take that we shouldn't be worried about Miller because although he's "an arrogant dipshit whose worst impulses are undermined by his incompetence." I really hope she's right!
Trump absorbs nothing but praise which is aimed in his direction.
ReplyDeleteThe fireworks were lovely and Bailey barking was probably her telling you she is enjoying them. Do you remember long-ago times when they would shoot way up high and then explode into stars which actually hung around for more than a few seconds before falling and dying?
Hi Steve, I just wanted to answer to you over from Bless our hearts blog. Yes, you are right. It is a twisted version of Islam in Iran and only someone as twisted as Trump can stand up to Iran. Don't you worry about their chants to annihilate the west? When you look at the history of Islam it has taken over a huge proportion of the world and let's be honest, do you want you really want to live in any Muslim country? I have been to Iran in the 70's and it was not the country it is now. Hey, I don't even like Trump, but he's got some guts! I am not any less moral person because I have a different point of view and I don't "hate" upon someone who has an opposing opinion! My son in law is an ex-Muslim for heaven's sake. Peace and love be upon you.
ReplyDeletePS I don't think my comment was strange as there are plenty of followers mentioning Trump. Even Ms. Moon on this page!! If the responses, I got are indicative of the "moral left" then God help us.
