Oh Frabjous Day!
Well, I'm just aghast! Not only did Talarico win in Texas, but most other Democrats in contentious races won too. As I write Michigan is still undecided, but it's looking good, and the Dems have control of both the House and the Senate. They should now be able to push back against some of Trump's craziness. Democrats have also been elected governor in Texas and Georgia, among other states. It's a big blue night!
I was afraid to hope it would turn out this well. Now I can exhale! I feel a bit like I did the night Biden got elected in 2020 -- like, finally, the adults are back in the room.
Here's what I don't want to happen: I don't want the Democrats to now become obsessed with vengeful investigations and impeachments. Let's just move forward, and see if we can take action that will make a difference in the daily lives of people across the country and the world. Can we reconstitute our decimated foreign aid? Can we strengthen our NATO alliances and our opposition to Russia in Ukraine? Can we restore investment in alternative energy, and meanwhile soothe tension in the Middle East enough to get that oil flowing again?
On the domestic front, you know what law I'd most like to see passed? I'd like to see a prohibition against federal law enforcement agents -- especially ICE -- wearing face masks (with possible rare exemptions for undercover officers). It seems like a minor thing, but if the authorities are going to detain people on the street as they're going about their daily lives, they should have to show their faces. Masked police are un-American. (Needless to say, I'd also like to see ICE activity scaled back in general.)
Oh, and Ilhan Omar comfortably won in Minnesota with about three-quarters of the vote, despite the relentless smear campaign I mentioned yesterday. Perhaps that was never much in doubt, but I still find it gratifying. Another middle finger to Trump and MAGA.
Just when I had come to doubt the fundamental decency of American voters -- when I'd decided that our country is rife with racism and retrograde, isolationist thinking -- they produce a victory like this. I'm glad people recognize that Trump needs opposition.
In Florida, where I vote, the Democrats lost many of the statewide races. But that's not really a surprise. I'm used to being in the minority there. And let's not overstate the message -- it's typical for opposition parties to do well in midterm elections. But still.
Anyway, that's enough about all of that. This (above) is the bouquet Dave bought me for my birthday. I took it out to the patio to photograph it in daylight. Pretty nice, right? And above that, you can see our Thanksgiving cacti, blooming up a storm. Funny how the blossoms appear mainly on the side of the plants facing the window.
I took a long walk on my own yesterday morning to finish off the podcast I've been listening to. It feels good to get that done. And I somewhat caught up in blogland and on e-mails, although as we all know, this is an unceasingly flowing river!

What a lovely bunch of flowers, and deserved I'm sure. Do you call the small white flowers, gyp?
ReplyDeleteI've always heard them called Baby's Breath.
DeleteThe flowers are gypsophila, gyp for short and yes, also known as Baby's Breath.
DeleteWe've been educated Steve. Thanks Sue.
DeleteIt is wonderful news now the hard work begins. Beautiful bunch of flowers with its gypsophila, I see it grows in Australia as well. The cacti, whether Christmas or Thanksgiving is also flowering its heart out.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flowers!
ReplyDeleteLet us hope that the election results mean that a few brakes will now be put on the more damaging policy decisions.
Yes, absolutely. They will check Trump's worst impulses.
DeleteAnd Michigan has been called! Incredible. Happy Wednesday. May things get better.
ReplyDeleteThis Thanksgiving, Americans will have greater cause for thanksgiving. The results are better than expected. Take that Dozy Don!
ReplyDeleteThe world is hopeful again.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful flowers! What are the pale purple ones? And yes, a wonderful night last night. Ohio managed to do the right thing! I think people are just sick of the nonsense and cruelty we've had to put up with. I do think Hegseth should definitely get the boot; he's a disgrace and dangerous on top of that.
ReplyDeleteSOUTH CAROLINA went blue! I'd almost given up hope that it could ever happen. I'm just beyond thrilled this morning. Such a wonderful relief!
ReplyDeleteIt was very satisfying watching the results come in last night and it does make me hopeful too.
ReplyDeleteIt was such good news to wake up to wasn't it. It feels like most of the world is breathing a huge sigh of relief. One day there might be sanity back in the White House.
ReplyDeletePerhaps a bit shocking, I'm in agreement with every political statement you made in your post today... except for one. I am okay without reconstituting foreign aid at least until we can get our own financial accounts in order. Other than that, I agree with all the rest.
ReplyDeleteI must say though, even though I agree and hope the Democrats don't get mired in retribution, I wouldn't shed many tears if the Current Occupant got impeached AND removed from office, as long as it was for something legitimate and not a trumped up charge, pun intended.
Really good news for the USA and the rest of the world just hope it's no just a mid-term glitch but hey ho great for now. Your birthday flowers are beautiful, lucky you. It is odd your Thanksgiving cacti bloom towards the window, I have three all in bloom and the flowers are facing away from the window. They are in the conservatory so get a lot of natural light from above too. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteYes, a BLUE wave! I was afraid to hope for this, but it has happened. And like you, I want the Democrats to proceed with caution and have a plan to make the lives of everyday Americans better. The GOP had 2 years of total control and botched it up. I want the Democrats to show independent Americans how they can govern well.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, all the Democratic Congress can do over the next two years is hold Trump et al in check and not allow further damage. We can and must hold investigations; that's Congress's job. We can plan and must plan for the next election; actual rebuilding cannot take place until then. But investigations and impeachment and criminal proceedings are essential. If they had taken place during Biden's term, we might not have seen a second Trump term.
ReplyDeleteAnd Florida is still as red as the devil's heart.
ReplyDeleteWhich does not surprise me but it disappoints me hugely.
I have to agree at least somewhat with Lynn Marie. I think that there must be some bringing to justice. What Trump has done is nothing short of treason, at least as applies to Russia. And the grifting!
But yes. Please. Let us get back on the rails.
Dave did really well with that beautiful bouquet.
As is Idaho, much to my despair but not surprise. Thank goodness for other states! Basically wonderful news from almost everywhere! Chris from Boise
DeleteArkansas, too. Predictably.
DeleteI would like to see Democrats impeach Hegseth and RFK Measles--as Maddow called him last night--but then get to work and right this ship!
ReplyDeleteAgreed.
DeleteThere are many smiling faces this wonderful blue sky morning.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Bouquet with Buds 💜
ReplyDeleteDave has fine choice in flowers! I'm glad you had a wonderful birthday-- and what a gift the Dems gave you (and the rest of us). And yes, in Michigan, Sayed has won. I was pleased to see Jolly as close as he was in FL. It shows some change. I agree with what you said on agenda but I also wouldn't mind some being held to account. Certainly Hegseth and Kennedy. They can do a lot but I'm not sure how veto-proof the majority is. I think (not sure) you need two-thirds for that. So, not sure how much they can override certain things. It will depend on how centrist the R winners are. But they can push that agenda, which will hold them in good stead in 28. I can hear the pardons clicking in Trump's little brain right now. And yay for Ohio and Sherrod Brown/Amy Acton, too!
ReplyDeleteI was so hoping Jolly would take Florida! I have remained hopeful that this mid-term would give us exactly what it did ... the 🌊! And, Boebert is out in Colorado!
ReplyDeleteThere may not be any dancing in the streets just yet but, by God, there should be some skipping going on! LOL
Yes, that's a beautiful bouquet, too!
The flowers are beautiful! And so are things in the US this morning. I had such a feeling of dread all day because I've been so hopeful before only to be knocked to the curb. I actually went to bed and slept through the night. I so agree about what needs to be done right away.
ReplyDeleteAnd we all breathe a sigh of relief. Americans are just beyond fed up, and the voting reflects just how strong that feeling is. I am ecstatic.
ReplyDeleteHopefully the next actions will work toward taking corrective actions. I do not want lots of mudslinging with no real accomplishments.
Your floral bouquet is exquisite. Dave chose well.
Gorgeous flowers! Gorgeous election! Woo hoo!
ReplyDeleteHere in Wisconsin we flipped our local congressional district back to blue! Finally! Yes, a frabjous day. Now to kick Hegseth and RFK out ASAP.
ReplyDeleteNot real blue here...nice birthday blooms,
ReplyDeleteYes! We are dancing in the street. I do feel like a burden has been lifted, that there really is hope that this national nightmare will end. But I disagree with you on no investigations or impeachments. Yes, moving forward but we also voted for accountability. And the fact that we have in the past not held presidents and other heads of state accountable in the name of moving on is exactly why we ended up with Trump. Trump and his lackeys must be held accountable for their lawlessness. Otherwise this will all just happen again.
ReplyDeleteOh, and, really gorgeous flowers.
DeleteBreathing a bit easier here this morning. I agree with Ellen, there has to be some accountability for the orange buffoon and his minions. We can only hope.
DeleteSo happy with the results today! I agree that the Democrats must work on affordability and the issues of the voters but they must also focus on accountability for the president's gang. They should be able to do both! And states can step up to better protect their voters and immigrants.
ReplyDeleteYou present a great "honey-do" list for the Democrats during the next two years. I would add that we need to balance the budget. I'm thinking Bill Clinton was the last to do that? I was surprised to hear Rahm Emanuel tout term limits in a clip I watched yesterday and I agree with him.
ReplyDeleteYour flowers from Dave are beautiful but I'm totally taken with that leaf at the top!
🌊
Yes please, move forward and seek change, not revenge. I would prefer to see ICE abolished entirely. The flowers are gorgeous but I am glad I can't smell those lilies.
ReplyDeleteThose are gorgeous flowers; as you know I'm a lily fan. Unfortunately, with my nibbling cat and the poisonous nature of lilies, I only have them outside. I was shocked and overwhelmed by the magnitude of the tsunami; I agree with you 100% though that, much as the Trump admin deserves retribution and punishment (are those the same?), Dems have to Get Stuff Done, moving forward in positive ways for the good of the country-US!
ReplyDeleteI'm relieved and Celebrating the recent Victories of the Blue Tsunami... some History was made, some Hope Restored... I'll take Hope and run with it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your comments, everyone. For some reason Blogger is acting up and preventing me from answering you all individually, but YES, it's a night to celebrate!
