I came across this picture while cleaning out our old paperwork. The room looks familiar, right? And yet not quite?
Well, that's because it's our flat, but before we moved in eleven years ago. It's also before the previous family moved in, because we saw their decor and it wasn't this. I'm guessing it was taken in 2010 or so, if not before. These photos were then used to list the flat for rent. Yes, you too could live here!
What's up with the very '80s glass and steel table and stereo equipment? And all that white furniture -- you can certainly tell this was long before Olga. I note that they took down all the terrible drapes before taking the photos.
Just for comparison, here's the living room now. (We also took down the terrible drapes, as has been discussed in previous posts.)
The dining room was very sparse -- more like an ironing room, from the looks of things.
Here's what it looks like now.
The old photo of the bedroom has the most furniture of any of the shots. I guess some previous occupant was in the process of moving out, but hadn't quite yet.
Here's the bedroom now. Those armoires came with the flat but they're not in the older photo, so I'm not sure when they came on the scene. Note that the carpet is the same. 🙄 And here we do have some unsightly drapes.
The kitchen looked very white. I could not figure out what that dirigible-shaped thing is on the left. Dave thinks it's a speaker for a phone, like a docking station, sitting on top of the microwave. (Addendum: He's right. It is in fact a Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air speaker.)
Here's the kitchen now. We had it painted yellow and all of the appliances have been replaced over the years.
And finally, this is what the garden used to look like! It was so empty.
Here it is today. That hazel tree on the right has gotten huge, despite several trims, as has the Japanese maple and some of the other plantings in the back. Overall it feels much more private and secluded, I'd say.
Anyway, just thought you'd enjoy this look at the flat before we lived in it -- particularly if you're into before-and-after real estate shots!
You've taken a house and made a home
ReplyDeleteLove this glimpse into the past! It's wild how different the flat looks — that glass-and-steel vibe is such a time capsule. You've really made it your own, and the garden sounds like it's thriving. Definitely a satisfying before-and-after!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed seeing round your home..... before and after. My sort of place with all those plants, though I haven't got so many big ones!
ReplyDeleteYou have created a home, rather than just a flat, I love you have so many house plants.
ReplyDeleteWonderful. It looks SO MUCH better with you guys in it. I love your colors.
ReplyDeleteIt looked so bare and characterless before. I know some people like that minimalist look. Now it looks warm and welcoming.
ReplyDeleteThat was indeed an interesting exercise. Funny how inhabiting humans make living spaces their own as time passes by.
ReplyDeleteFascinating. All that white makes it look soulless. Can you imagine trying to keep a place like that free of stains?
ReplyDelete"Your" pictures are a 200% improvement after all that lifeless white.
ReplyDeleteThe comparison is so interesting. Some of those staged photos look so stark. It looks so much better the way you have it. Now it looks homey. And your garden is now a real garden.
ReplyDeleteYour changes definitely make it somewhere I'd want to live. I'd be afraid to touch anything in the before photos!
ReplyDeleteYour flat looks much better now, more like a greenhouse. I think you guys need to replace those drapes in your bedroom though.
ReplyDeleteThey used a different, more wide angled shot, making the place look wider. I notice your pictures are more realistic and definitely more inviting. I wouldn't have recognized some of these spaces before.

I love all of the wonderful windows you have. I wondering what is the thing in your kitchen on the right hand side in the corner near the spices? And is that your washing machine in your kitchen next to the dishwasher? Do you have a dryer somewhere too?
ReplyDeleteQuestion: Who in the world would leave an ironing board in a room where they are taking pictures for a flat listing? I mean, how hard is it to pick up an ironing board and move it out of the frame?
ReplyDeleteWell. It is obvious that you and Dave have put a lot of love and care into your home and you two have beautified it, inside and out.
I like the greenery in the living room over the all-white look!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely like the after shots much better. The before shots are so sterile which I suppose is what they want for the purpose, a blank slate for new tenants. All the windows alone would have sold it for me.
ReplyDeleteWow. Well, it's much lovelier under your guidance. Warmer. Personal. Home. Granted, those might be for-sale/for-rent photos but then if you're going to stage it, stage it! Get rid of the ironing board and neaten up the bedroom. That's just weird. Here's a question -- what the thing in the upper right corner of the kitchen (black in theirs, slightly to the right in yours). I could never live with all that white! And the garden is a huge improvement. Love all your windows. This is a fascinating comparison!
ReplyDeleteI love all that greenery you have indoors. Lush and exotic!
ReplyDeleteI much prefer how you and Dave have made the flat your home!
ReplyDeleteHome sweet home. You and Dave have made a lovely home. The windows and all the natural light make it extra special. You chose this flat wisely. The garden spaces are fantastic as well.
ReplyDeleteThe before photos are like an enamel bathtub/kitchen/clinic - Why did they think that was appealing? Modern- clean? ew- You have done so much to improve the place- like everything you touch turns to be beautiful! Loved seeing the before and after!
ReplyDeleteThis is fun and I definitely prefer your look to the staged one! As for staging homes for listing, I'm one of those who would much rather see empty rooms so I can envision my own things there. Maybe this is because of my design background. I have no trouble looking at a floor plan and seeing it three dimensionally.
ReplyDeleteWhat is that black thing on the wall in the photo with the dirigible? Is it a water heater?
ReplyDeleteEvery house I have owned, all two of them, I have taken pictures of all the rooms and the outside before we moved in. I like looking through them from time to time to see how things have changed in the years since as I have fixed up the rooms.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed seeing your flat Steve. All the plants look wonderful and add so much. You have both made it into a lovely home (and Olga is the finishing touch!).
ReplyDeleteWendy (Wales)
Steve, your home is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe before and after are two very different vibes! I like the look of white but wouldn't want to live in it. I prefer to be surrounded by the nature-like tones you and Dave have used, and to have things of interest everywhere to look at (again, like you and Dave have done). I do like before and after photos, so thank you :)
ReplyDeleteVery interesting transformation: much warmer and homey now.
ReplyDeleteQuite the transformation! The real estate photos are really sterile. I like it better now!
ReplyDeleteInteresting changes...
ReplyDeleteI think I got into spam.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind white but that's WAY too much. It's so stark and cold. I love the warmth and charm of your current decor.
ReplyDeleteThat was really fun to see the differences.
