Meandering Through Mayfair
I was back down in Westminster yesterday, this time to meet up with my friends Chris and Gordon for lunch and do a bit of paperwork. Gordon is one of our referees for citizenship, so like Sally he had to sign a paper attesting that Dave and I are who we claim to be. We got that out of the way and had a good vegan lunch at Mildred's, which is possibly one of the most popular vegan restaurants in London. We got the lunchtime prix fixe menu, which was very good.
Then I went for a wander through Soho and Mayfair, taking photos all the way. I've photographed this dramatic lamp shadow (above) before, way back in 2014. This time a bird flew into the shot and placed itself just so, as if the shadow were some kind of laser beam blasting that pigeon from above.
In Mayfair, echoes of mid-century media at the Time & Life Building, now the home of Hermés. I wonder if the passing teens and 20-somethings know (or care) why the building is called that.
This little pub, the Coach & Horses, used to be crowded on all sides with buildings, but now the ones behind it have been torn down for some grand project or other. It makes the pub seem even more oddly isolated.
At Berkeley Square, home of the famous nightingale, I re-created yet again my photo from April 2000, which I first blogged about and re-created back in 2011. It's hard to believe that more time has elapsed between that blog post and now (14 years) than between the first photo and the post (11 years). The scene hasn't changed much.
I popped in to a Pret and ordered a coffee and some chocolate-covered almonds, and waited with other patrons in a rather disorganized group as the coffees were produced. When the barista called "white Americano" I stepped forward to take it -- not because I am a white Americano but because that really is my usual coffee order -- but she said it was with hot milk and thus belonged to a nattily dressed older gent behind me. I stepped aside and said to him jokingly, "I didn't take a sip from it, I swear."
"I wouldn't have minded if you did," he said to me, rather suggestively. Whoa! Was I hit on by a nattily dressed older gent in Berkeley Square? I believe so.
Hedonism Wines was bursting with springtime color, adorned with huge clusters of tulips, trees of Easter eggs and larger, graffiti-covered eggs down below. As the sign says in the window, "Have an eggcellent day!"
From there I walked to the Bond Street stop, took the Jubilee Line back up to St. John's Wood and stopped at school to scan the documents Gordon and Sally had signed. I uploaded all our supporting docs last night, so now the application is complete except for our "biometric meeting" on April 30. After that, it's just a matter of waiting.
The wisteria around the corner from the school, which I've photographed in years past, is once again in full, flourishing bloom. It smells heavenly.

Love the Easter eggs trees.
ReplyDeleteVery creative, and very pastel!
DeleteWhat an enjoyable day. Not long now until your application is done and dusted.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm looking forward to seeing it through!
DeleteDid you note the green plaque on the wall around 17 Bruton Street , commemerating where our late Queen was born?
ReplyDeleteNo! I didn't even know that plaque existed until you mentioned it and I looked it up. I was walking on the other side of the street so I missed it entirely.
DeleteThe lamp shadow looks like wiring.
ReplyDeleteThe lone pub looks delightfully absurd.
The tree looks at much the same stage as it did in the 2011 photo, but no hyacinths now.
Getting a hit is very good for the ego, even if you think the person is deluded.
Beautiful flowers in the last two photos.
The photo with the hyacinths (actually bluebells) is from 2000 -- a whole quarter-century ago! But you're right, the tree has barely changed.
DeleteIt was a beautiful day for wandering and photography. Hedonism Wines is well named!
ReplyDeleteI guess after the austerity of Lent it's OK to be hedonistic on Easter.
DeleteYes, you were clearly hit on by a nattily dressed older gent in Berkeley Square. You’ve still got it! These photos have lit up my day. Kind of the gull to arrive right on cue. I love the shot of Hermés-Time-Life. I doubt those two have a clue what it means. Hedonism Wines is incredible!
ReplyDeleteThat was such a funny encounter. I was like, "Did I hear that right?!" I choose to believe that I did.
DeleteI must tell our Ian about Mildred's - he has never mentioned it before. As for your date with the nattily-dressed man, please send me £200 in a brown envelope and I won't tell Dave about it. While the cat's away the mouse will play.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Ian knows about Mildred's, but yes, mention it to him. I'd love to hear his review.
DeleteLove that wisteria. I hope that pub continues to survive.
ReplyDeleteIt's on such an oddly-shaped sliver of land that there's probably not a whole lot of potential for redevelopment -- which protects it!
DeleteThe nattily dressed older gent was definitely flirting with you! And who could blame him? :)
ReplyDeleteIt was the funniest thing, and so unexpected!
DeleteAnother really enjoyable trip with you. Your photos are so good. I can see you as a top photographer - you missed your vocation!
ReplyDeleteWendy (Wales)
Well, thank you! I took a photojournalism course in college and I enjoyed it, but in those days the photographers had to do all their own processing and printing, and I never liked that part as much. Now, with digital, I am free, free, free!
DeleteGorgeous wisteria. Do you have pass some form of history/social science test for the UK passport? Here, you need to pass a multiple choice citizenship test covering history, federal laws, the various states and regulations, education and so on. It's like the theoretical driving license test, all potential questions are online, so you can prepare. Many people here use it as a party game.
ReplyDeleteYes, there's a test called the "Life in the UK" test that covers history, government, culture and that kind of thing. We had to take it back in 2017 in order to get Indefinite Leave to Remain, so we've already jumped that hurdle.
DeleteI'm quite taken with that small pub. I'm not sure I've seen a stand alone building of such a small footprint four stories tall. I imagine the three staircases take us a significant portion of the interior space. Assuming the pub is on the main floor, it makes me ponder who lives in the upper floors?
ReplyDeleteI have never been inside so I'm not sure. Some pubs are hotels as well as bars, so those may be (or were in the past) rooms for rent? I'm not sure I'd want to live above a pub, even in such a cool building. There'd be a lot of noise.
DeleteI love wisteria! We have a couple of places around us that have great gobs of it - makes me smile.
ReplyDeleteYeah, there are several houses in St Johns Wood that have it all over. It does tend to go wild!
DeleteThe wisteria is gorgeous. It looks like spring has sprung. You had a beautiful walk. And got hit on. Sounds like a fine day to be Steve Reed.
ReplyDeleteThe planets were aligned in my favor!
DeleteAll great photos, Steve! Love that pub - like Ed, I would love to see what is on the upper floors! Glad you are getting out and about and enjoying your break.
ReplyDeleteTrying to take advantage of the good weather!
DeleteGreat photos showing the vibrance of the city and signs of Spring everywhere.
ReplyDeleteThe pub looks lonely standing among the new buildings. Dramatic contrast.
The flirty guy at the coffee shop was testing the waters!
Ha! Well, I was so surprised I didn't have time to even respond, but that's fine. I am married, after all. LOL
DeleteI'd be thrilled to be hit on by anyone with a full set of teeth but that's not going to happen.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful day for a walk about! And you made art of it. All good, Steve.
I must say I did not see his teeth, so who knows?!
DeleteI love all of your photos but that wine shop is the real winner with all the Springtime colors and representing Easter with the fancy eggs and flowers!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly grabbed my attention and lots of passers-by were posing for selfies.
DeleteAbsolutely Incredible Photos There Brother Man
ReplyDeleteWell Done ,
Cheers
Thank you!
DeleteI'm loving all the photos. That wisteria is gorgeous and that pub is great. It looks so perfect perched there all by itself. I'm feeling the itch for another London trip.
ReplyDeleteCome on over! :)
DeleteWhatever will they do with all of those plastic eggs after Jesus gets killed and animated over and over again since second century first Easter- the bunny leaves town and what do the palstic eggs do now? Landfill? They do look gorgeous but ...silly. Oh yes, indeed , you tasty dish- you were desired in the coffee queue, nudge nudge, wink wink.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's true of a lot of holiday decorations, isn't it? Lots of resources and expense for a relatively short celebration.
DeleteI love ALL your photos today! Can you imagine living above that tiny pub? Have you been in there before?
ReplyDeleteI did not go inside, but after all these comments I can see I'll have to go back!
DeleteThat poor pub, actually, it's a beautiful pub, and brings to mind an old fashioned street scape. It always feels nice to be flirted with.
ReplyDeleteI think the pub is in a good position, actually -- in a busy area and yet protected by its strangely-shaped bit of land.
DeleteThat wisteria is beyond dazzling. And not only do I love the name Hedonistic Wines, I love their beautiful floral display. It looks like a wonderful walk. That pub is the cutest little thing I've ever seen!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it great? You can check it out next time you're in Mayfair!
DeleteThose flowers are spectacular! I would definitely go into that pub for a pint. So adorable!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I really do have to go back now.
DeleteI really enjoyed looking at the photos. And the London sky seems quite blue!
ReplyDeleteIt has been a very sunny spring, for the most part -- a nice change after the dreary winter.
DeleteSounds like a nice day - a little work, a little play, freedom to do different things!
ReplyDeleteExactly! Vacation!
DeleteLovely!
ReplyDeleteLike our day out in Ybor! :)
