How the Sausage is Made
I've been passing this bench on my way to work for years, and in recent weeks it's been slowly degrading. You'd think the council would come along and at least remove the old one, which looks a bit dangerous, if not replace it entirely. I have an app that allows me to report discarded rubbish to the council, but I'm not sure it covers furniture repairs. Still, I might report this bench.
Reader Ellen D. asked yesterday whether I make notes each day for the following day's blog post. The answer is, sometimes. I usually open a new post every morning and just write off the top of my head. I sometimes think I have nothing to say, but if I just start writing (often prompted by a picture, of which I seem to have a virtually endless supply) I usually find there's a post in there somewhere. If there's something specific I want to mention, or I want to quote something funny that I read or that someone said to me, I might open the post the day before and make some notes, save it as a draft, and then write it out the following morning.
When I was in high school my AP English teacher used to assign "timed writings," in which we'd be given a topic and 15 minutes or so to write a brief essay. That was a good preparation for blogging, though as you saw in my recent post about the Beholder, I was journaling even years before that. I've had a lot of blog training! It's actually quite surprising that I didn't pick it up until 2006, given that blogs were around for years before that, but I was initially wary of sharing personal information on the Internet. As you can see, for better or worse, that dam has burst. Now you can't shut me up.
The somewhat unlovely "stinking iris" is once again blooming. These iris grow wild in our garden. We initially tried to remove them because they're not that pretty and they do have a weird, meaty smell when you pull them up. But we've found that they grow well in areas that don't support much else -- shady, dry spots particularly. So now we let them live and proliferate. I saw a bee on one the other day, so apparently the insects like them, though I'm not sure they offer much in the way of nectar or nutrition.
And here's another shot of our yellow peony, which is going gangbusters. As you can see from the dropped petals on the ground, some of the flowers have already fallen apart. (The ones Olga brushes against when she bulldozes her way through the garden.)
On TV, Dave and I are watching Jon Hamm's show "Your Friends and Neighbors," which we like a lot. We watched two episodes of "The Studio" with Seth Rogen, and I like it but Dave is not a fan, so I may have to pick that one up on my own. I finally finished the first season of the Australian crime drama "Black Snow," which I really liked but which also got the thumbs down from Dave, so that's also one I'll probably have to watch on my own if I want to continue it. I think there are two more seasons. I don't get a whole lot of solo TV-watching time so we'll see if I can make that happen.
I'm in the same situation with "Poker Face," which I watched for one episode and I love Natasha Lyonne so I want to keep going, but Dave is not enthusiastic. Like Olga, he's getting harder to please as he gets older. I think watching YouTube on his phone has trained him to accept only what he specifically wants to see, you know?

We are much the same with TV viewing, neither of us likes any soaps, but our taste on thrillers vary, I often have a my TV evening when hubby is out.
ReplyDeleteI would be fine with that but Dave is hardly ever out, unless he's on a school trip. (Which is infrequent!) I think alternating shows might be the way to go -- first one of his, then one of mine, etc.
DeleteWe have a quite a big area of those stinking iris plants under a tree in the shade, but I haven't noticed any flowers yet! Must have a closer look. ( I did pull some of last year's
ReplyDeletemouldy red berries off the other day.) Apparently they are also known as " roast beef plant"...never heard that before. (Just looked them up)
They do smell rather beefy when pulled up. I like the bright seed pods in the fall.
DeleteI know white snow, and to avoid yellow snow but I don't know about Black Snow.
ReplyDeleteYou should look it up! I'm surprised you haven't heard of it since it's from your homeland, but I suppose it's ridiculous for me to expect you to keep track of every Australian TV show.
Delete"Stinking iris"? I thought you were referring to my Auntie Iris who had halitosis and rarely washed her clothes. As for your blogging "method", it's hard to believe that you just sit down and churn this stuff out. I thought it was all carefully planned out way in advance, like a military campaign.
ReplyDeletePoor Auntie Iris! I'm glad I give the appearance of careful planning and deep thought. LOL
DeleteGo ahead and report that bench, it's a disgrace and a trip hazard for those who don't watch where they are stepping. I use a similar "blogging" method for most of my Friday stories, one of the "words for Wednesday" might spark a sentence and the rest of the story writes itself.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised the bench is still there. It's in front of a BT telephone exchange. You'd think they'd want it gone, if nothing else.
DeleteI do love that yellow peony. I always think that peonies drop their petals in one enormous 'flounce'. Like taking off a dress and standing there in skinny form.
ReplyDeleteIt is kind of like that, especially when a dog brushes against them!
DeleteSG is more particular about what he’ll watch, too. I have many started series waiting for my solo return. Is that as attractive as the stinking iris gets? And, yes, I’d say the branch qualifies as rubbish!
ReplyDeleteI'm much more tolerant of shows with shortcomings than Dave is. It has to hit the mark right away for him. Yes, that's as good as it gets for the iris -- at least the flower. They have attractive red seed pods in the fall.
DeleteThat yellow peony is gorgeous. I only have had the pink, which I love, but last about a day or so, I think. I loved Black Snow. The lead guy was excellent. Not just a pretty face.
ReplyDeletePeonie flowers are all rather short-lived, I think. Yes, the lead actor is really good!
DeleteThe way we do TV is that each of us has a night to pick what we watch, alternating every other day. We have some similar tastes, but some that are also different. Michael is getting more and more particular about what we watch. There are a couple of series that we haven't finished because I can tell with the look on his face that he doesn't want to watch it. I have a few solo shows that I need to finish, but I never watch tv during the day. I have never seen a yellow peony. In Virginia, the "natives" call those flowers "Pee-Own-Knees".
ReplyDeleteThat's a good way to do it. I think we'll have to do something similar. I suppose that means I'll be watching more cooking shows. 🙄
DeleteI've always wanted to choose what I want to see. That's why I think I've never really been interested in just watching what comes up on tv. I'd agree that bench is a hazard. Where I live, it would be a lawsuit waiting to happen!
ReplyDeleteRemember how it used to be with network TV? You'd get three options and that was it! Maybe something on PBS or a local station if you're lucky.
DeleteI was not a Natasha Lyonne fan--I was mostly indifferent--but I got hooked on Poker Face and just love the show.
ReplyDeleteAnd that bench is a danger.
OK, that's encouraging to hear. Now I just have to find a time to watch it!
DeleteRick and I sometimes have different TV styles, too. Not always. But I'm always glad that he likes Sunday nights on PBS (Brit night!). He's much less a mystery fan than I am. And we record the late night comedy opens, a good quick watch, and Washington Week (PBS Fridays). Fortunately, when you live in two houses, it's pretty easy to pick and choose when you are on your own! I'm lusting after your yellow peony -- it's a stunner.
ReplyDeleteI've never been a fan of late night TV, like Kimmel or Conan or, in the old days, Carson. I'm usually asleep, for one thing, but also a little stand-up comedy goes a long way for me.
DeleteWe rarely watch live television and prefer to watch completed series, though we slipped up on The Bombing of Pan Am 103. (I was surprised to see it being slated by the Guardian.)
ReplyDeleteWe haven't watch that yet! It's on our list, despite the Guardian.
DeleteThanks for answering my comment question and mentioning me in your post! I'm blushing! ;)
ReplyDeleteI can watch what I want when I want because I am divorced.
Freedom! :)
DeleteI think you should get to alternate TV viewing - if Dave's not interested he can put on his headphones. (Says the person who never touches the remote unless Mike isn't home - ha!)
ReplyDeleteHe does that a lot, actually. If he's not into the show he'll just watch Facebook or YouTube videos. He's big on scrolling, which I am not.
DeleteI totally agree, the bench should be removed and ideally replaced. Reporting it sounds good to me.
ReplyDeleteThis particular iris is new to me. It is very nicely filling in a garden space. Like your iris, my lily of the valley is spreading and I'm encouraging them. Both plants seem to withstand a dog walk through and that's always a benefit.
The yellow peony is beautiful.
Your writing style is very conversational, and lovely to read.
We planted lily of the valley beneath one of our hydrangeas years ago, and every year they come up, but they have grown no bigger and they rarely bloom. Dave was surprised because they spread like wildfire at his old house in Michigan.
DeleteI always loved writing assignments in school and was probably the only one who groaned when told the pages because I was forced to restrain myself to keep it under the limit while all my classmates were groaning about how much they had to write. Soon after I started journaling and in the fall of 2003, I was introduced to blogging and have been doing both that and daily journals ever since.
ReplyDeleteMe too! I never understood why so many people struggled with assigned reading. To me that didn't even count as homework!
DeleteThat bench does look unsafe. It would be nice to see a new one there.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to look for Black Snow. I've enjoyed a couple of Australian series and The Brokenwood Mysteries from New Zealand. Good to hear your review of Your Friends and Neighbors. I've been wondering if it's worth watching.
I don't know "The Brokenwood Mysteries." I'll have to check that one out!
DeleteThe writing process you go through is interesting. Your blog is always interesting . For example you post about an old broken down desk and get us thinking what is happening. We are engaged with what you write about which is the way it's supposed to happen.
ReplyDeleteI hope my blog is always interesting, though sometimes I doubt it. :)
DeleteI like your stinking iris. It's so unusual. So I'm glad you have stopped trying to eradicate it. Marc and I have pretty much the same taste in shows. Though sometimes we'll get through a whole movie or season and he'll pan it while I liked it. We just finished watching the first season of Deli Boys, on Hulu I think, which we liked a lot. Our fallback when we're in between shows in slogging through the 7 seasons of Psych.
ReplyDeleteWhen we first moved here the iris was everywhere. It's very prolific. We've scaled it back quite a bit, but yeah, we're learning to appreciate its positive qualities.
DeleteThat bench has passed beyond hope of repair. It is now rubbish.
ReplyDeleteWe have stinkhorn mushrooms. They smell horrible and they sure ain't pretty.
Your blog writing method is much like mine.
We're watching The Four Seasons on Netflix and finding it very amusing. Glen's and my taste is so diverse we're lucky is we can find anything we both want to watch.
I loved "The Four Seasons"! I remember those stinkhorns. They are pretty disgusting.
DeleteThe title of this entry is referencing how you come up with your posts each day? I'm currently reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, so the idea of making sausage takes me a totally different direction!
ReplyDeleteYes, exactly -- I'm thinking metaphorical sausage, not actual sausage. :)
DeleteI suspect that a lot of bloggers have been writing things for years. I have all kinds of things - little plays, humorous articles, stories, etc. - going back to my early teens.
ReplyDeleteYeah, me too. I've discarded the more embarrassing things but I still have a lot lying around.
DeleteHave you seen Tina Fey's The 4 Seasons? That was fun.
ReplyDeleteYes! We loved it!
DeleteWhen you get your UK passports, maybe donate a bench to the public. I think you can do this with a shiny sign on it, like "Dave, Steve and Olga's".
ReplyDeleteThe second season of Black Snow was meh, take it from me.
That would be fun, to get Olga's name on a bench! Of course she'd only approve if the bench had cushions and got several hours of direct sun a day. :)
DeleteI don't have the streaming service for Poker Face; in a way, it's a relief because I already have a list of series I want to see. I get rather obsessive if I like a show. In college, we often had to do in class writes and I also mostly blog off the top of my head with photos to help me with transitions or thoughts.
ReplyDeletePhotos make great transitions!
