Stats and Garden Critters
At the risk of turning my blog into the "flower of the day," here's a picture of one of our dahlias. This dahlia, unlike most of the others, has had a very successful year with lots of flowers -- even though, as you can see on the leaves, it's covered with powdery mildew. Next year I'm going to have to stay on top of that problem better. It's been a real plague in this dry summer.
We continued to get rain yesterday, which was good, except that our school building developed some dramatic leaks including one that closed a stairwell. There's been some construction on the roof over the summer and I expect that created the problem, which fortunately didn't allow any water into the library.
I had another crazy busy day, which didn't permit me to either read blogs or respond (entirely) to comments. I did see Mr. Pudding's recent post about his blog stats, which prompted me to look at mine last night. I haven't checked them in ages and I found, like him and some other bloggers, that my page views have gone up dramatically in recent days. Seven of my ten most viewed posts in the last six months were written within the past ten days, with some of them gaining more than a thousand views, which seems statistically suspect. (Of course, I was writing about ABBA, so there is that.)
The "top referring URLs" were even more of a mystery. Google and other bloggers I expected, but I also got tons of views supposedly from the web sites of Stanford, Northwestern University, NASA and PepsiCo. Now, I know Pepsi and NASA are not linking to my blog, so I imagine this reflects some kind of bot activity -- maybe referral spam. (From Google: "Referral spam involves bots and automated tools, not real people, sending fake 'referrers' to your blog's stats page.") I don't quite understand the purpose -- it could be AI crawlers, or something else, but it doesn't hurt the blog and I'm not that concerned.
Here's my geographic breakdown of viewers within the last seven days. They love me in Brazil and Vietnam -- I have visited and written about both of those places, which could be why, but it could also just be bots. (Vietnam is one of my primary traffic sources, according to all-time stats.) My fellow countrymen and women here in the UK are giving me a comparatively cool reception.
I don't think any of this means anything useful, except that I get a lot of bot traffic like any blogger. But it's interesting.
Finally, this morning I downloaded the videos from our garden cam. Here's the latest garden activity, condensed into less than four minutes:
You'll see at least two (maybe three) different cats, a couple of really good glimpses of our lanky fox, and various birds. At the beginning of the video you'll see the cat and the starlings checking out some food in a plastic container -- that was a piece of Dave's leftover sushi that I left out for the fox. The cat and the starlings got there first!

Today we are getting our trail camera back from our son, who has had it for a couple of years, so that we can hopefully see what the dog spends so much time looking at from the back room window! We know that there are rats, but he never barks, so not sure what is so fascinating. When I say he never barks.......he goes ballistic when out on a walk if he sees another dog!!.....(or when I am trying to talk to someone).
ReplyDeleteGreat rain yesterday wasn't it? At one point we had thunder and lightening and then huge hail stones.
I hope your trail camera answers some questions! We didn't have thunder, lightning or hail -- at least not that I know of.
DeleteI would have thought that any blogposts that focus upon Abba would see an immediate and severe plunge in viewing figures - like lemmings jumping from a high cliff.
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not, YP, vast numbers of your fellow global citizens feel differently!
DeleteEven I have noticed a large increase in views according to my stats. Not sure how that happens as my blog is private.
ReplyDeleteOh, that's weird! That DOES make me wonder what's going on. Maybe it's just some change in the way Blogger is counting views.
DeleteThe stats thing is odd, my daily page views have trebled this week, and I doubt they are all real people - hope the bots enjoy my blog!
ReplyDeleteYeah, sadly, I think it's almost certain that the increased traffic we're all seeing is not due to views by human eyes.
DeleteThe bots seem to travel round the world, perhaps they are on a cruise but nothing to worry about I've been told.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure somebody somewhere makes money on it but beyond that, who knows.
DeleteThe dahlia is a beautiful single bloom.
ReplyDeleteAustralia does not love you at all.
What is the pretty blue bird in the clip? A blue tit?
I think you and River may be my only Australian readers!
DeleteSeveral years ago, I had a run of days with more than 10,000 views a day. They were all from Russia. I wonder what that was about. I love when the fox and the cat stopped and looked right at the camera. And a magpie!
ReplyDeleteWow, that's weird. Almost like a bot got caught in a loop and just kept pinging your site over and over.
DeleteI, too, will look at stats every so often just to see what's up, but I don't put too much stock in them.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I will focus on the dahlia. That is a gorgeous photo of a gorgeous bloom
Yeah, I really think the stats mean almost nothing. I rarely look at them.
DeletePoor fox - everyone else licked that container clean. You can see him sniffing about : “I know there was something here . . . “
ReplyDeleteOur neighborhood (American) fox has a much bushier tail.
Think I’ll go check my stats now.
Yeah, he definitely smelled traces of that sushi. He needs to move faster next time! Our foxes' tails get bushier as they age. I think this is a young one.
DeleteI don't look at my stats much, but I'm amused to see how many countries have people or bots reading.
ReplyDeleteI never imagined Ecuador would be in my top ten!
DeleteMy page views have been off the chart , over 1500 on the one before the current post so definitely bots. One reader says it's AI trolling people's blogs looking for stuff, whatever an AI looks for. The starlings seem quite sociable.
ReplyDeleteWeird that the AI bots would just turn up now, on all our blogs. I've been hearing about AI bots for months. Why now?
DeleteSeems like every blogger I read is wondering about increased views so it must be bots or AI gathering info.
ReplyDeleteI've been seeing articles about feeding animals and it really isn't supposed to be good for them. There are several articles about this on line. Here's one that explains why:
https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/idkt_feedingwildlife.htm
Just a thought...
Yes, feeding animals is not a great idea, I realize that. I don't make a habit of it. I've only put down very small amounts of food a handful of times, when I don't want to waste some piece of protein that I think could benefit them.
DeleteSo the moral of the story is "Don't let construction workers on your roof.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely!
DeleteYour garden is getting as much traffic as your blog! And you can see it's actually real. Unless the Russians and PepsiCo are sending out fox bots.
ReplyDeleteThat dahlia is tremendously beautiful. Glad the powdery mildew isn't affecting the blooms.
Fox bots! Ha! The powdery mildew is unsightly but I've read that it won't harm the plants.
DeleteYeah my post count went way up too and I just read another blogger that had the same thing happen. I suspect there is something going on behind the scenes. Hopefully blogger will keep working throughout it.
ReplyDeleteBlogger might be encouraging it. Maybe all those extra clicks somehow make money for Google.
DeleteCodex: Close. But no cigar. ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's a combination of things.
You mentioned a while back that you had a cola which you usually don't drink. If a co.pany is looking for a new product to market it will look for everything with that key word in it.
Some of the other reasons are more nefarious.
That it suddenly went up for all of us is useful info.
Yeah, but that cola post was weeks ago and not even in the top posts getting traffic. I think it's unlikely that's the reason. I think "referring URLs" means they're sending other readers to the blog (through links, for example) -- not that people or bots from those institutions are clicking on the blog themselves.
DeleteP.s. it's not about who comes to you; it's about what you're looking up for yourself or are interested in in order to advertise to you.
ReplyDeleteWell, it IS definitely true that companies keep track of what we search for and respond to that information, but I'm skeptical that's what going on here. I'm not looking for a college degree or travels in space -- why would Northwestern or NASA be interested in me?
DeletePps. Can I just say how much I enjoy your pics and your garden cam? Loved yesterday's with the rain in the background and well kiteeeeeeh!
ReplyDeleteThanks, and I'm glad you like the pics!
DeleteYour dahlia flower is perfectly formed. Each petal placed to form a lovely circle. It is the magic of growing beautiful flowers.
ReplyDeleteAI is seeking information for their machines. All the large language models are in need of text. Blogs on the Internet are a big source of text. (That's my guess.)
Great video! The fox family in your garden always surprises me.
God forbid that AI should start writing like me. I'm way too wordy!
DeleteI love that color dahlia and am a huge fan of the flowers which can range from controlled to wild. I'm on the wild side where John prefers the more contained ones. No surprise there! I don't even know how to check stats. Typepad didn't have very informative ones so I didn't bother. WordPress might be different.
ReplyDeleteSo are you switching to Wordpress? I hope you've found a way to salvage your content!
DeleteGreat video! Beautiful dahlia.
ReplyDeleteI am certain the sudden increase in blog visitors has to do with data mining for AI.
Yeah, I think AI is the most likely explanation too. Funny how it's suddenly noticeably happening for all of us.
DeleteThe first cat did not seem that interested in the contents of the plastic tub. Cats are so expressive when they don't like something. Beautiful dahlia.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that cat looks pretty well-fed!
DeleteWhat is the blue bird that appears at 2.10 in the clip? One of those cats was very curious about the camera!
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy to get a flower a day.
It's a magpie. Its feathers are iridescent so they look blue, but they look black in slightly different light.
DeleteI never bother to check my stats, but I see on yours as on YP's there is no figure for Australia. Gorgeous dahlia.
ReplyDeleteI guess my two Australian readers just don't generate enough traffic to register! :)
DeleteI enjoyed the video. It's interesting to see who inhabits the garden when the humans are not there.
