Dave the Trip Planner
I spent all day yesterday at home. It was supposed to get rainy later in the day, so I spent the morning trying to get some stuff done. I moved our rubber trees inside after their summer outdoors -- both of them look much better having had that outdoor time -- and I mowed the lawn. The garden looks much tidier.
I also vacuumed and took care of all the houseplants and washed the door mat at the back door, and I trimmed the bushes along our front steps so we can get in and out of the house without looking too much like the Munsters.
And then I dealt with blogs and blog comments, and finally, after all that, I sat down to read another 100+ pages of "City of Night." I hadn't touched the book all last week but now I want to make a concerted effort to finish it. I'm feeling a bit bogged down. I wouldn't say John Rechy is the greatest writer -- he turns a nice phrase but he's also very casual. Wasn't it Truman Capote who said of Jack Kerouac's work, "it's not writing, it's typing"? (I also have it in my head that he said that about Jacqueline Susann, but that might have been a joke I read somewhere.) Anyway, Rechy occasionally wanders into typing territory, but the book is nonetheless remarkable for its candor about gay culture in a very conservative era. I wouldn't say it's sexually explicit, except through implication and deduction, but the cultural descriptions must have been eye-opening for many people at the time.
I just learned yesterday, incidentally, that John Rechy is still alive! He's 94 years old. So much for the idea that clean living leads to a long life. After all, the famously dissipated William S. Burroughs lived to be 83.
Our cyclamens have bloomed in the back garden. We planted these things years ago and they just keep coming back. We're always surprised by them, having forgotten they were even there.
Speaking of surprises, Dave has come up with a Thanksgiving trip for us. He bought us tickets to Tenerife on Easy Jet, and found us a hotel. This astonishes me for several reasons: 1) It involves an airport, which Dave detests; 2) We've never flown a discount airline anywhere; and 3) He took the initiative to make the plans. Usually I am the trip planner. I am thrilled to take a back seat for this little adventure even though, like our planned October break in Penzance, it's going to be a very short vacation (about 48 hours).
Remember the blurry photo of my childhood dog Herman that I posted several days ago? I wondered how it would look after being run through Waterlogue, the watercolor painting app. It still looks blurry, weirdly, but it's an interesting effect!

That last picture hurts my eyes. The cyclamen are beautiful, there are plenty blooming around here right now but no white ones. Woo-Hoo! A trip 😁
ReplyDeleteTenerife should be quite warm in November. Will be a break from London's chill 😎
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the remark, "it's not writing, it's typing". What the hell does that mean? For instance, I am presently typing this comment. As I see it, I am both writing and typing. Did Truman Capote write all of his stuff with a fountain pen?
ReplyDeleteWaterlogue certainly does create some interesting effects.
I still have a blooming cyclamen but its last flower for the year has just opened and there are no new buds. It's a bit strange that they are blooming in your country and mine. Ha, I used to be cautious about writing 'your country' but I can feel free to now.
ReplyDeleteI can tell you, if someone can plan a holiday as well or better that you, that is true luxury.
easyJet...the free under the seat bag did me ok for two weeks...and saves about £50 ...each way....I used a vacuum bag to reduce contents size ..it definitely worked, but you need one handy for the return trip!!...and yes, they DO check bag sizes....
ReplyDeleteHave a good trip ! X
The cyclamen look happy in the damp. I read City of Night in 1982 and still found it unlike anything I had read. I was amazed some years ago to learn he was still alive considering the life he led. And now 94. Wonderful. I used to think he was SO hot. His heartfelt understanding of queer life, women’s experiences, and trans life has always been admirable. We did EasyJet once. SG doesn’t like standing in line... But I’d take a quick trip to Tenerife. Dave’s a good man!
ReplyDeleteThose cyclamen are so pretty! So is the picture of Queen Olga you added to the sidebar.
ReplyDeleteHooray for a Thanksgiving trip! We've been thinking of going on a short trip at Thanksgiving too, depending on how some medical stuff Gregg's having done this week turns out. A few days away would be good for us both.
Have a great week at work! :)
I have no luck here in Canada with cyclamen. We are too hot in the summer for them outside and inside is too hot and dry in the Winter with the heating on constantly. I actually thought the photo of your dog, was a paint by numbers kit. I love the effect, very stiking.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that cyclamen are growing outdoors for you. Maybe the cooler nights have brought them on. They're lovely.
ReplyDeleteAs our family trip planner, having my eldest daughter plan out our trip to Greece a couple years back was really refreshing. I could learn to enjoy that if I had others to plan trips for me.
ReplyDeleteI am also the vacation planner and earlier this year Carlos planned a trip for us and it was so nice not to do any of that!
ReplyDeleteCyclemens are seasonal fall pot plants here. I had no idea what I was looking at in the picture of your dog until I read the explanation.
ReplyDeleteThe best thing about having someone else plan a trip is that if things go awry, you can blame them.
ReplyDeleteSee how mean I've become?
No, seriously, planning a trip can be so burdensome and it is very good of Dave to take that off your back.
How lovely for the cyclamen to pop up as other things are bidding farewell. And well done to Dave! I had to look up Tenerife, but that will be a lovely break and a beautiful area. I LOVE "It's not writing, it's typing." So true in so many cases! You've been incredibly productive. Well done!
ReplyDeleteWe have a plant called shooting star that is similar but not a cyclamen. I used to have some at my old house and they always surprised me every spring, so delicate, with their hair blowing back in the breeze (in my mind anyway).
ReplyDeleteHow nice to have your partner do some trip planning instead of you having to do it all. We're going to see the salmon spawning in a couple of weeks and my hubby actually booked a hotel. Perhaps hell is freezing over and nobody told me:)
How nice to have some getaways to look forward to!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful break that will be as the winter chill starts to set in. A little beach time will be good for the soul.
ReplyDeleteThat is an interesting effect on that photo. Do I detect a bit of pointillism?
Your cyclamen grows very well and spreads in the garden. Cyclamen only grows in pots for indoor display in my area.
ReplyDeleteI've only heard great things about Tenerife. For many years my British relatives Gladys and Basil stayed there for a couple of weeks for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Dave chose well and how nice that he planned the entire trip.
I love cyclamen and will get some of them as soon as they're available. They do well for me in the cooler weather. You're going to be quite the travelers! I was also the trip planner and disliked it because I then got criticized for some of my arrangements. Grrrr.
