Funky Pumpkin Patch

This little display just went up in our Lower School lobby. Who doesn't like a "Funky 2nd Grade Pumpkin Patch"? I like the autumnal color scheme and all the individual artworks, but I think my favorite might be the blue-gray one at upper right, second from the top -- the one that looks like a big lima bean. That kid has quirky artistic vision!

The second one from the left in the top row above is pretty cool too. Looks like pumpkins baking in a big magenta oven.

Thanks for all your concern about Dave. He stayed home yesterday and rested and he feels better today, but we still have to figure out next steps. The doctors didn't recommend any kind of follow-up beyond an MRI of his head, so maybe it's back to the GP for suggestions on how to better regulate his heart rate. I think he needs to be sure not to get dehydrated, which I suspect could be playing a part in this, and I know he has some anxiety about stuff going on in his professional life. A colleague suggested I get him a FitBit or something similar that will monitor his pulse, and I like that idea. We need to know how often this is happening and if it's constant or episodic.

I moved a few more of the dahlias into the shed last night, tucked away for the winter. The others still have leaves on them so I'm leaving them out until the foliage dies back naturally, which it will do with the first light frost. They look so terrible -- I'm ready to get them out of sight!

In the afternoon I read that Dick Cheney died. As I told a co-worker, "He's in a warm place now."

Last night Dave made chili using some leftover bolognese sauce that he made a week ago. When he suggested this idea, I was all for it -- but I told him he should heat the bolognese separately, put it in the bottom of our bowls, and put the new chili on top. That way we'd eat ALL of the bolognese right away, rather than stirring it into the chili, which itself will become a leftover. Know what I mean? Otherwise, we'd have old bolognese hanging around in the new food.

Well, Dave thought this was just the craziest suggestion I'd ever made. "I'm boiling the whole thing again," he said.

But in the end he relented and I ate the bolognese with the new chili on top, and chili pot remains untainted. Doesn't that make sense to you? Or am I being nuts? I suppose any time we make soup with leftovers everything gets stirred together -- which is the same thing Dave was proposing -- and that sits around until we finish it. I dunno.

  1. If he has got an iphone definitely get an apple watch, as it records a lot of heart related data while awake and asleep

  2. Oh, I applaud the pumpkin patch pictures! Every one is different and they speak without words about the artists. I also applaud the teacher or teachers who put this display together in celebration of their pupils' best efforts. This must have been quite a task.

Is their any connection between eating ancient leftovers and Dave's health issues? My wise, fatherly advice is to eat leftovers pretty soon after they have been shelved in the fridge - particularly when meat is involved.

  3. Ray's Samsung digital watch measures heartbeats. That might be a better choice than a Fitbit that can do all sorts of wondrous things, that aren't needed.
Hydration is so important, with extra needed if you have a drink or five.
I hate food wastage, so anyway food can be used up, that works for me.
    Pumpkin panels, nice.

  4. The grey pumpkin is good.. obviously the young artist has seen a "Crown Prince " or "Queensland Blue" ...very fine eating as well!!

  5. Cheney dying on the same day Mamdani is elected made for a good day. (I will give Cheney credit for speaking out against Trump and speaking up for both Lynn and Mary.) My daughter wears an Oura ring. Much less cumbersome than the watches or fitbits, etc.

  6. Very creative pumpkins there. You have some quite artistic students it seems.
I am not sure that I would eat week-old leftover meat sauce. Perhaps my digestive system is not as robust as yours!

  7. Weaving one leftover (which sounds pretty darn old already) into another soon-to-be leftover sounds like a doomed science experiment.
And I’m sorry about Dave’s medical mysteries.

  8. LOVE the pumpkins! What a cheerful and creative display.
Here's my theory about the bolognese/chili situation- if the sauce is iffy enough for you to want to keep it somehow separate from the rest of the new ingredients, I'd say perhaps it should not be eaten at all. But I understand your theory which is to make sure it gets eaten first. I'd just never considered that. Like Dave I just mix it all in together and boil it all.

  9. So many splendid pumpkins there. I would hang a few on their own and it would be an art wall of special interest. Quite a few stand alone!
The Dick passing on to a warmer climate is just right ! That made me laugh BIGLY!
Sounds vaguely like you two will be making some serious decisions relatively soon. You guys are still young enough to roll with it, whatever it ins. You always seem to make the right choices. heart stuff can be a fright- I have loads of friends with issues but the medical folks generally know what they are doing...except for that one time....specialists are the thing, of course.
I have a pot of chili in the fridge that I made over a week ago. I will be feeding the garbage disposal and beginning anew. Usually I make small batches -it disappears quickly- all that effort.,so this time I made too much and there it sits. Lesson learned.

  10. There's some nascent artistic talent in those pumpkin pictures.
A health monitoring watch is a good idea, but can take over. My nerdy husband consults his every morning to find out if he's had a good night's sleep! Actually, it also went quite some way to alerting him to a serious health issue, so I don't laugh too much at him - at least, not while he's looking!

  12. I'm afraid I'm Team Dave in this episode.

  13. From a technical standpoint, mixing the Bolognese shouldn't cause any issues as long as it got heated hot and long enough to kill any bacteria or mold growing in it.

  14. I think Steve, the non cook, giving advice to Dave the trained chef, is hilarious. And consider how that might affect his heart rate! Seriously I wonder if he remembers to drink water enough. It's easy to get dehydrated and causes all kinds of effects.

  15. The pumpkin above the lima bean looks like ITs in a warm place - maybe it's with Dick Cheney!

I'm trying to drink more water and it's very annoying. So my heart goes out to Dave.

  16. The pumpkin display is cute! Shows wonderful imagination!
Any meat sauce in the fridge for a week would be perfectly fine to incorporate into another tomato-based sauce or soup!
The Dems all won last night and they won big!

  17. I love those pumpkins!
And Dave maybe needs to take better care of himself. I know he has a chronic illness, but he has other body systems that need to be cared for as well. I also know that a chronic illness can use up most of your bandwidth and you don't have much left for other things like hearts and lungs.
A trip to the GP is an excellent idea.

  18. I have a fitbit type thing I got free from my insurance company. Something like that not only keeps track of your heart rate but also your steps so I find myself walking lots more which would be good for Dave too.
I usually pop leftover sauce in the freezer for future use so I know it won't spoil. But I would trust Dave the chef in this instance...

  19. I love the pumpkin patch. What a creative idea.
A fitbit might be a good idea. I used to have one but it quit working and I never replaced it. I think they are more reliable these days. I'm not sure what to think about the chili/bolognese combo.

  20. wonderful pumpkin mural. I'm assuming the teacher had a pumpkin still life set up which some students completely ignored. Good for them.

I had to look up bolognese sauce because it did not sound very appetizing to add to or under chili but it's just a tomato meat sauce. I'd have stirred mine up altogether once in the bowl.

  21. I adore the pumpkin art! As for the dinner, that never would have crossed my mind. It would most definitely have crossed SG’s.

  22. The pumpkins were a neat project for the kids. There was a very creative teacher behind that project.

  23. The pumpkin art is fabulous. The kids must love seeing their art on display.
In my house, anything in the fridge for three days is disposed of on day #3. That's my rule.
As for noodles and chili/sauce, I boil the noodles and cook the chili/sauce separately. The hot noodles go on the plate, and the sauce goes on top. I notice some people mix everything together once on the plate, others twirl the noodles on the fork and include sauce as they go. It all works!

  24. I love the many visions of pumpkins represented! A FitBit or Apple Watch is a good idea. I just checked my resting heart rate on my FitBit and it was 55. I drink a lot of water and try to walk every day, but I don't know how that affects it. I think you made perfect sense on the sauce.

  26. This art work looks really good, warm colours just right for the time of year!
I hope Dave will get some answers soon and can rest his mind.
I once was at an art exhibition about war crimes and the audience was asked to write something or other on pieces of cardboard that then got stuck on the art work and I wrote Dick Cheney - war criminal and there was a short discusssion whether naming names of living people was ok (it was in the end).
