In Which I Turn 59
Yes, today is in fact my birthday. Dave and I celebrated last night because it's always more fun to celebrate on a Saturday, and besides he has to go down to South London today to guest-conduct a musical ensemble for a friend. (Long story!)
We went to Canary Wharf, in East London. A couple of years ago, while there for the Winter Lights festival, I spotted a couple of restaurants that appeared to have been built on floating structures in the boat basin. I blogged a photo at the time. They've lived in my memory ever since, so we made a reservation at the Hawksmoor steak house.
Hawksmoor is a small chain, with ten restaurants in the UK, two in the USA (New York and Chicago) and one in Ireland. Here was the view from our very good table by the window:
Not too shabby, right?! I like the reflected lights from the restaurant overlaid on the cityscape. I do wonder how long we're going to be able to maintain the kind of energy production that allows us to light up empty office buildings at night. Surely this is not sustainable in the long run of civilization. But in the meantime it looks nice.
I had an excellent dinner -- oysters, filet mignon with a couple of sides and a salad, and a pavlova for dessert with a candle in it. Oh, and two not-very-strong martinis! I gained approximately 20 pounds and will probably be diagnosed with gout.
But that's OK, because I plan to work it off today with a long walk somewhere. We shall see.
When left to my own devices I usually tend toward vegetarian meals, but you can't go to a steak house and not eat steak. And it was darn good, I must say. Dave and I were both very impressed.
Otherwise, yesterday was pretty chill. I spent it mostly on the couch reading. I'm about 140 pages into "The Old Curiosity Shop" and I fear the curiosity shop itself has already exited the plot, having been siezed and its contents sold off by a scoundrel. What will the old man and Little Nell do now?
The photo at the top, by the way, shows illuminated "Lightbenches" by LBO Lichtbank that were part of Winter Lights several years ago, and are now permanent features in Canary Wharf's Jubilee Park.

Happy birthday!!
ReplyDeleteDid the lights on the light benches change ?
No, they're constant.
DeleteNot too shabby, at all.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday. A big one next year.
With LED lighting, the amount of electricity being used is so minimal and costs little. If the buildings have LED lighting, and I would think most would have been converted, I can't see it as a problem. Sometimes they are lit as cleaners move through a building too.
That's a good point -- LED lights are a lot cheaper. And yes, the cleaners could have been on duty.
DeleteHappy birthday Steve.
ReplyDeleteHello Yael! I can't read your blog anymore since it is now private but I hope all is well with you and your family.
DeleteThank you, Yael! I have the same problem as Ellen -- I can't read your blog anymore. Hope all is well!
DeleteI've been concerned about you since your blog left my timeline, so I'm glad to see you here.
DeleteVery Happy Birthday. You are so young!!
ReplyDeleteHa! I sure don't feel very young! But I guess everything is relative.
DeleteHappy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteGood choice of destination for a celebration. Canary Wharf is quite impressive at night. We used to stay in a hotel there before early London City flights.
Oh yeah, it would be very convenient to City Airport.
DeleteHappy Birthday young man....enjoy your day.
ReplyDeleteThank you! :)
DeleteHappy birthday. And you did yourself well on that feast at the restaurant. London looks full of colour and vibrancy.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Thelma! It's funny how long I thought about that restaurant before finally going there!
DeleteHAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVE! As you may recall, you share November 2nd with our little Margot. She is exactly 57 years younger than you. The celebratory meal sounds fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI'd forgotten that Margot and I share that commonality! If only I were 57 years younger. LOL
DeleteHappy Birthday, Steve!
ReplyDeleteWe're only 1 1 /2 years apart; I'll be 58 in March.
You celebrated in style, and I like the photo with the restaurant lights reflected over the cityscape. As you say, lighting up empty office floors isn't sustainable, and one wonders why they're still doing it - don't companies talk about having to save money all the time?
Well, Andrew may be right that there are cleaners about, or maybe they do it for security purposes. But it does seem mad, doesn't it?
DeleteHappy, happy birthday, Steve! I love your photos -- but then, what else is new? Not easy to walk off that meal, what with your gouty big toe!
ReplyDeleteSomehow I managed! LOL
DeleteHappy Birthday Steve! So many of my favorite people were born in November, including you! Enjoy your special day.
ReplyDeleteAwww, thank you! I share my exact birthday with David Schwimmer, weirdly enough. Is he one of your favorite people too? LOL
DeleteHappy birthday, Steve. You won't need to eat today.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I barely DID eat. Just a bowl of cereal and a vegetarian bibimbap at dinner from the local Korean place.
DeleteHappiest of birthdays! Glad to hear your celebration includes today's walk, and will probably bring us some more blog photos!
ReplyDeleteThank you! You know me well, as you can see from my subsequent post. :)
DeleteHappy Happy Birthday!! And you got gout for it, too!!! 😁😁😁
ReplyDeleteWhat more could I want?!
DeleteHappy birthday!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteWishing you a joyful and very happy birthday, Steve. This looks like it will be a year of change and excitement for you, with retirement in the offing (and considering the other mystery opportunity). What a good deal of anticipation there will be. It looks like you celebrated in great style and elegance and your dinner sounds spectacular. May it be all you hope it to be!
ReplyDeleteYes, there certainly are some changes afoot, though we're not sure yet how extensive they'll be. Never a dull moment!
DeleteHappy Birthday Steve!
ReplyDeleteI don’t eat a lot of red meat these days and usually avoid steak houses. If I do eat a steak, I much prefer to cook my own. But then, I can count the number of times I’ve had a fillet mignon on maybe three fingers.
I don't think I've had one in at least fifteen years, if not more.
DeleteActually, I stand corrected -- I had filet mignon last year in Argentina!

To stay safe and sane!
DeleteHappy birthday, Steve. You're a year older than my son. I'm glad you enjoyed your celebration dinner, and will have many more!
ReplyDeleteHandsome Son could be my brother!
DeleteHappy birthday Steve x
ReplyDeleteWendy (Wales)
Thank you, Wendy. :)
DeleteHappy Birthday, Steve. Sounds like a wonderful way to celebrate! Best wishes for a fabulous year!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ellen!
Delete59 is the cusp of a big mental change, at least it was for me. I didn't mind the 50s, they were good years for a lot of reasons but the 60s were hard for me to assimilate and culminated in my year of the selfie at 64. Anyway, happy birthday.
ReplyDeleteI remember you posting selfies on your blog -- was that your "Year of the Selfie"?
DeleteHappy birthday, dear Steve! I'm glad you two went out for a celebratory dinner and it sounds delicious! Hey- hard to beat a good steak. And what a gorgeous view from your seat at the window.
ReplyDeleteYou're still a young'un. Now go walk your fifteen miles and prove it! (Just kidding. Please don't walk fifteen miles unless you really, really want to.)
I'm not sure I could walk 15 miles if my life depended on it! LOL
DeleteHappy Birthday! from S. Colorado, too! Your meal sounds delicious and I doubt you gained anything ... walking and the usual bodily functions will take care of that! LOL
ReplyDeleteWith you planning on your retirement, you should have a great year ahead!
Here's hoping! Thanks for the good wishes!
DeleteHappy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteThank you! :)
DeleteHappy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Colette!
DeleteWishing you all the best on your birthday!
ReplyDeleteYou chose a wonderful restaurant with views to die for and the steak...plus...plus...plus sounds gourmet and delicious.
I also like the city lights in the dark. It all looks very techno.
Thanks, Susan! Yes, it was a bit "Blade Runner," but without the dystopia.
Deletehappy Birthday youngin'...I am old enough to be your sister and the boss of you! So glad that you got born and that we met in real life! Nice of Dave to take on conducting at the last moment!
ReplyDeleteBlogging makes brothers and sisters of all of us, right? :)
DeleteHealth and happiness to you, now that you are getting ready for active retirement!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sabine! Isn't "active retirement" an oxymoron? :)
DeleteHappy Birthday! What a fabulous celebration.
ReplyDeleteThank you! :)
DeleteHappy birthday. I hope you had a great day and it sounds like you did have a good day as you found good restaurant.
ReplyDeleteGood food always makes a good day!
DeleteHappy Birthday to you! That sounds like a wonderful way to celebrate your birthday. I remember being impressed by all those tall buildings and seeing them lit up at night has to be even more impressive. I saw quite a few interesting looking restaurants when I wandered around the area back in August.
ReplyDeleteNext year will be one of those major milestone birthdays for you and me both. It's just that mine will mark some 20 years ahead of yours.
Twenty years is nothing! :)
DeleteHappy Birthday, and many more :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jenny!
DeleteHappy Birthday Steve. Congrats on yet another trip around the sun!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jim!
DeleteHappy birthday, Steve!! I'm glad the dinner was a delicious success for both of you!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kelly!
DeleteHappy birthday! Sounds like a great evening.
ReplyDeleteThank you! It was indeed.
DeleteHappy Birthday! Sounds like a fun dinner...
ReplyDeleteThanks, e! Very fun!
DeleteA fine dinner out with your sweetie sounds to me like the perfect way to celebrate your birthday. What could be better!
ReplyDeleteBetter than a party, from my perspective!
Delete59! Happy Birthday. I remember 59. Dimly. Hah! The restaurant sounds fabulous and the view is nice though I too deplore the 24 hour lighting in office buildings, while the rest of us are urged to save power and save the world. Pavlova is my favourite birthday dessert.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to get a candle into that crispy meringue but somehow the restaurant managed!
DeleteDarling Steve,
ReplyDeleteWishing you a very Happy Birthday and many joyful returns. The celebration sounds perfect.
Many years ago, we had an apartment in Rotherhithe on the opposite side of the Thames to Canary Wharf. It was, of course, the poor neighbour of the glamorous skyscrapers of Canary Wharf but we did benefit from the marvellous riverscape at night. Just like Manhattan we used to say!!
Well, the irony of living in Manhattan is that people outside the city -- in New Jersey, Queens and Brooklyn -- have the best views of Manhattan! I guess the same can be said for Canary Wharf!
DeleteHappy belated birthday!
ReplyDeleteWishing you all the best and many happy returns of your day! This is a momentous time what with your new citizenship and retirement from the library on the way. May it all go well and may you and Dave be very well. x0x0 N2
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday. Seems we were born about 5 months apart. Do you still love 80s music too?
ReplyDeleteAnother happy belated birthday. Sorry I missed it, Steve, and the MEAL TOO! It sounds delicious though I hope you didn't eat your oysters raw.
