Tally Ho!
It's been so damp lately, baby teasels are sprouting from seeds still in the pod. I may put some of those in their own pots to cultivate them for spring!
Well, I'm back on a computer -- a new one, which I went out and bought yesterday. I usually go to the Apple Store in Covent Garden, but I suspected Covent Garden would be insane on a sunny Saturday, so I instead I took a bus up to the Brent Cross shopping mall. And wouldn't you know, that was insane too! Heaving, as the British would say. I navigated the mysterious sign-up-and-wait system of Apple Store shopping, and used my waiting time to pretty much settle on the machine I wanted.
After a painless transaction I emerged with a new 13-inch MacBook Air running the Sequoia OS, with 16 GB of memory (quite a bit more than my old machine). I can see all the keys -- they haven't been worn away by too much frenzied typing! And the screen is so new and clear and free of blemishes! It's also much lighter than my old machine.
So I'm pleased all around, except for one thing: I cannot get Lightroom, the Adobe software I use to edit my photos, to run on this new machine. You'd think it would be as easy as going to their website and downloading an update, but no. Nothing downloads, even when I'm signed in. Apparently this is a known problem. So I have to monkey around with that today.
I also had a bit of a kerfuffle about cables. The new Macs are so smooth and minimalist that they only have two cable ports, both requiring USB-C cables. There's no place to insert a flash drive or memory card or any regular USB device, like my camera. So I had to go back to the Apple Store to buy an adapter, and I realized moments after I bought one that it really wasn't what I needed, which they didn't seem to stock. So I took the tube to work and picked up the adapter I use there. Thus I was at least able to shift all my data to the new machine via my back-up drive.
I took the photo above outside the Brent Cross mall. I was amused by the "Tally Ho!" -- apparently that's the last stop in North Finchley, outside the Tally Ho pub. But it also seems like a friendly greeting!
I did a lot of other stuff yesterday too -- cleaned the kitchen, where the painters had splashed some stuff around the sink, repaired a picture frame that was damaged when it fell off our newly-painted wall (the nail was loosened by the painting), and re-hung two pictures with new hooks. I took care of some houseplants and trimmed some stuff back in the garden too. It's about time to prune the roses and the buddleia, but I'll give them another week or two.
Do you remember me blogging about Ben Wilson's chewing gum art? He's a street artist who paints on hardened bits of chewing gum left on the sidewalk. The piece above is located near the school where I work. I first wrote about it 13 years ago, and revisited it again eight years ago. As of yesterday, it's still there, albeit looking faded and worn. Its companion piece, also shown in those posts, is long gone.
Oh, the police arrested some guy for our neighborhood stabbing. Still no word on who was stabbed or why, or who was arrested, but I'm virtually certain this was not a random thing. It's likely to be a beef over drugs or women, as is often the case.

Your painters seem to have been a little careless, leaving you all those little replace and repair jobs.
ReplyDeleteI hope your shiny new Macbook works wonderfully and produces many more blogposts for us to enjoy!
Isn't that typical with painters? I must admit I haven't dealt with many of them but I expected to do tidying and organizing after they left.
DeleteCongratulations on the new MacBook! Your mentioning of now being able to see the keys again reminds me of my desktop computer; although the computer itself is fairly new (bought in 2023), I kept the old monitor, keyboard and mouse, and many of the keys have no visible letter on them anymore. It doesn't matter to me, because I learned "blind" typing when I was about 18 and am fairly good at it, and usually don't look at the keyboard unless I am looking for a rarely used sign.
ReplyDeleteThe "Tally Ho!" on the bus hopefully brings a smile to people. It did that for me.
I don't really need to see the keys either, as evidenced by the fact that I used that keyboard for so long! But it helps and it DOES look better.
DeleteThe teasel is wondrous. Congrats on the computer. And, yes, the connections (and lack thereof) could drive you crazy. And the “known issues” are exasperating. I’d take that bus and asked the driver to announce when we got to Tally Ho (or maybe he automatically does). I’m so glad you shared that photo. It made me happy. I still think the painted chewing gum is ingenious.
ReplyDeleteI should take that bus sometime just to see how they handle the "Tally Ho!" at the end! Maybe in my retirement I'll make a habit of riding London buses.
DeleteThere is no g in heavin'.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how, but I heard about the stabbing and thought, that's not so far from Steve.
You must have heard about it here, no? Surely it hasn't made the news globally. It barely made a splash locally!
DeleteI just happen to know that your new laptop computer would have cost you £1,129.00 at John Lewis. I didn't have to Google it or anything... I just knew it - probably because I have a remarkable brain. Although I like the chewing gum art, I am not about to get down on my knees painting hardened chewing gum on the pavements of Sheffield.
ReplyDeleteWell, I would not have advertised how much I paid, but thanks for doing it for me!
Delete(Yes, that is sarcasm.)
buying a new gadget is boggling. Frustrating! something is always a miss. I hope that new thing works out for you eventually. It sounds lightweight enough to travel with- good idea! I bought a mini Ipad for London trip- could not remember the password so had to have it erased entirely , losing all of the photos and videos of said trip. I have not used it since. Plus I quit paying for Icloud and lost everything there as well! All of this keeps me in the moment I guess. An excercise in ZEN.
ReplyDeleteYes, this will definitely be a good traveling computer. So sorry about your iPad! That's horrible! This is one reason why I upload everything to Flickr. No matter what happens to a device, I have the photos online.
DeleteComputers. It's always something and then something else!
ReplyDeleteA chain reaction!
DeleteThe teasels are amazing.
ReplyDeleteThey are, aren't they? No wonder they're such survivors.
DeleteI would have been very unhappy to pay a ton of $$ and find there were issues. That's probably why I never replaced my old netbook!
ReplyDeleteWell, there's always SOME issue. I didn't expect one quite this complex, but I sorted it out in the end.
DeleteYour computer experience was exactly like mine. I got a MacBook Air myself a couple of years ago and had to go out and buy adapters too. I think you will really like the laptop though, even without the ports that the old macs used to have.
ReplyDeleteIt's so weird how limited the ports are. It's just not very practical.
DeleteMy 2020 MacBook Pro has four ports which is plenty for me. Oh, there is nothing like getting a new Mac! For me, anyway. The sound it makes when you start it is, well, music to my ears. Glad you got that taken care of.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have a very busy, productive day.
Four is twice as many as I have! I have two USB-C ports and that's it. (Aside from the power cable and the headphone jack.)
DeleteI hope my old computer lasts as long as I do. The thought of moving files and learning new features and buying adapters just sounds awful to me.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with yours, though, Steve. Sounds like you know what you are doing!
Moving the files was actually very easy, once I had the adapter. Getting them all to work on the new machine was more of a challenge!
DeleteI love that picture of the baby teasels still in their pod. My mini mac also has limited ports so I have a thing the same size width and length but much thinner that is just extra ports connected to the mini by a cable. I'd show you a picture but can't post pics in comments.
ReplyDeleteThat's sort of like the adapter I have for work, I think -- it's a sort of flat rectangle with all sorts of connection points in it, and a single cable leading to the Mac.
DeleteIt seems like you pretty much have to know someone to get murdered or attacked. Yes, there are random robberies and such, but usually it's as you said -- drugs, domestic, someone you know. Three cheers on the new computer. I just hate that transition time -- getting things over and then stuff doesn't transfer or work like your adobe. I have two ports on mine so have to have an extender if I want to do anything more. seriously annoying!
ReplyDeleteYeah, very few crimes are truly random. Apple seems to believe that everything can be done wirelessly these days and cables are no longer needed -- not quite true!
Delete16GB...that's double what mine has. Fantastic. Mine is the same size but I'm now on the Tahoe operating system. It just updated about two or three weeks ago. I can't remember if I had to go back and get the adaptor or if they sold me one when I bought the laptop but I have one I use quite a bit. It's the only way I can download from my camera. I use cloud storage so even though I have 44,500 photos, I have plenty of memory for what I do. Once everything gets working, you are going to love it.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear they caught the stabber.
I just updated to Tahoe last night! I couldn't believe I just bought a brand new machine and it already needed an upgrade. I don't use cloud storage, particularly for unedited files, but after they're edited I put them all on Flickr which is pretty similar. My house could burn down and they'd all still be there!
DeleteI have the 15" MacBook Air and was shocked at how much lighter it was than my old Pro. I also had to get use to the port situation. I'm still running Sequoia even though it really wants me to update to Tahoe. Enjoy your new laptop!!
ReplyDeleteI updated to Tahoe last night and I honestly don't see much difference, aside from a few cosmetic things. Then again I haven't used the new machine long enough to know all its features.
DeleteAs you may know I'm trying to learn my new computer. It's a hard job for this old guy.
ReplyDeleteFortunately my new one works almost identically to my old one.
DeleteNew computers cause such frustration. So, you blog on a MacBook? I use a PC laptop with an actual keyboard but now have an old hand-me-down iPad that I'm thinking about using to blog. It would be more complex, and I don't like the virtual keyboard, but I'm tired of having to edit my posts on my phone with Safari. Glad they found the stabber; I hope it wasn't random. Those crimes scare me the most.
ReplyDeleteCan you install Safari on your PC? Is that possible? I have been a Mac person since the mid-aughts and I'm very satisfied with them. Much more secure than Windows and easier to operate, IMHO.
DeleteGetting a new computer is frustrating and exciting - hopefully you'll get everything sorted out today.
ReplyDeleteOnce the setup is done it should be smooth sailing!
DeleteYour new laptop sounds great. Having the latest in tech feels good, except for when a feature or two that you need disappears. Now that causes some tech angst. Good that you have a work around as well as an additional purchase to make everything right. Sprouting teasels seem miraculous, especially for February.
ReplyDeleteViolent crime is terrible in any neighborhood. I'm glad an arrest has been made.
I haven't tried all the apps yet so I don't know whether there will be others that also fail to work on the new machine. Time will tell!
DeleteIt seems to be a common problem with Apple products, cords and ports that are difficult to deal with, all in the pursuit of minimalism.
ReplyDeleteLove the teasel photo.
Yeah, I don't quite get the aesthetics over functionality.
DeleteA lovely photograph of the teasel.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your new laptop.
All the best Jan
Thank you and thank you!
DeleteI was unable to install Lightroom on this computer which I got a year ago or perhaps two. Only after lots of frustration did I call Adobe support and was told that they no longer will allow you to install products you've purchased in the past without a subscription. I declined. A.I. is getting good enough now that I doubt I'll ever do manual editing anymore anyway.
ReplyDeleteI thought from the title you might be referring to the sailboat Tally Ho which is currently partway on it's journey from the west coast of the U.S. to England to sail in some race. See below. I've been following this person for some six or seven years now.
https://www.youtube.com/c/SampsonBoatCo
I'd never heard of the boat! Interesting story. Yeah, Adobe does everything by subscription now. I've been paying £10 a month for years to use Lightroom, and now I note the price just went up. Ugh.
DeleteI've been watching multiple episodes of "Monsieur Poirot". Wonder if they called him in?
ReplyDeleteIf you see my 'hood on the TV, you can say, "Hey! That's where Olga used to walk!"
Delete16GB? I have that on my new kindle, my ASUS laptop only has 8GB, but it seems to be enough for me. I would be annoyed at no usb ports though and not being able to download stuff. I just checked the side of my machine and there are 3 usb ports and one differently shaped one for something else. I do wonder about "known problems" and why you aren't told about them when purchasing and why aren't they being fixed?
ReplyDeleteI think the issue stems partly from the fact that I was using a very old (11+ years) edition of Lightroom and probably missed several subsequent updates. It's a bit like jumping from a horse-drawn carriage to a rocket!
DeleteGreat capture of the teasel sprouts!
