More Colorful Leaves

Lots of walking yesterday, which felt good. I've been stuck at home with Bailey as she recovers from her surgery, hesitant to leave her alone lest she get crazy, jump around and bust her stitches. But yesterday, after her morning outing, I decided to risk it and take a long walk by myself, working my way through some podcast episodes.

As you can see, it wasn't especially sunny, but the autumn leaves were still colorful. I walked north from our flat almost to Brent Cross and then back down through Cricklewood. I polished off two episodes of "Raising Hell," the podcast I've been listening to about a child sex ring that may or may not have operated in Omaha back in the '80s. Some people say it's a hoax, as both state and federal investigators concluded, but others suggest it really happened. So far I'm leaning toward hoax, with possible grains of truth embedded. From a reporting perspective it's an interesting tale, with lessons on sorting reality from fiction.

Remember the Cricklewood elephant? Well, it MOVES! I'd never seen it in animatronic mode, but it's pretty realistic! According to the sign hanging around its neck, its name is Duke. I still don't know where it came from or why it's there.

On the way home I stopped in to a charity shop where I'd seen some nice wine glasses in the window. There were only three of them, but I thought they exactly matched the ones we already have, so I bought them. When I brought them home I found that in fact they don't match at all. Oh well. My goal was four matching glasses, which we do not have. I guess I could always buy new ones, but it's not that important.

Then, of course, I had to walk the dog -- so after lunch I set out with her. She has pretty much returned entirely to normal. She's up for longer walks and she gives hell to the squirrels.

The rowan trees are burdened with berries that practically glow among the bright yellow foliage.

Finally, last night, Dave and I went upstairs for dinner with our neighbor, Ian. His wife and daughter are out of town so I think he was eager for some company. He roasted a chicken and we talked about how they found the apartment, how they're settling in and other things. I was just amazed I convinced Dave to socialize on a weeknight -- the fact that we didn't have to leave our building was a major incentive!

  1. Like you, I can't get enough of autumn foliage this year! I love this time of year anyway, but even more so this year after the long, extremely hot and dry summer. Those rowans!

Now you have two sets of 3 matching wine glasses each. When you want four, simply use two of each set and pretend it's meant to be so.

The animated elephant's ears really do look realistic. As a kid, it would have fascinated and scared me in equal terms. Walking away, I'd have probably looked back a million times just to make sure it really wasn't following me.

    1. They're really beautiful trees, and we have a lot of them on our streets.

  3. I have done that with wine glasses - found some that I thought were exactly the same as those we had; but when I got them home, although they were the same shape the new ones were much bigger!

    1. That's what happened to me! The stems are shorter, too.

  4. Listening to podcasts as you ramble... Isn't that a little hazardous when silent cyclists, muggers or golden eagles approach you from behind? Like a swordsman, I am always "En garde"!

    1. Depends where I'm walking. If I were in a place where I was likely to be attacked by muggers or golden eagles, I might be more attentive!

    1. It looks good to my very unprofessional eye. Obviously I can only evaluate it superficially!

  6. I love that elephant. I just read that it was shipped from India specifically for the Elephant and Barrel Pub. What an investment!

You can just keep buying wineglasses and have an unusual set of interesting mismatched glasses.

    1. I should have known you'd figure out the answer! I swear I googled it the first time I mentioned the elephant and there was nothing, but now I see several mentions of it and the pub online.

  8. There are lots of berries on the trees this year, it usually signifies a hard Winter ahead, but with one thing and another I don't have much faith in the old sayings anymore. I have ONE of my set of six matching wine glasses left, and strangely Alan has five of his, sadly thee sets are not the same. I love my single one, so I live in hope of at least finding it one matching friend.

    1. Do you know where it was made? If so, you could probably search online for a replacement. I hadn't heard that about berries but I hope it isn't true. :(

Your photo of the rowen tree berries is fabulous. A most colorful time of year, isn't it? I have hardly any plates or glasses that match. Well, the mason jar glasses do, in fact, match each other. I'm not sure I ever really grew up.

    1. Ha! When you think about it, the whole idea of matching dishes and glassware is kind of silly.

  14. Autumn foliage is like snow, we only see it in pictures except for once in a blue moon. We do have some trees that will turn color, we just don't get cold enough soon enough to turn them.

  17. I'm glad Bailey is doing so well. There's something about the yellow leaves -- even on the gloomiest or cloudiest day, they still pop and are so beautiful. The streets are especially pretty with the leaves. Interesting about the elephant. It's pretty cool but is it always there? I'm guessing not but it seems like a tough thing to store!

  18. Just like the olden days when neighbors were invited over for tea.

Adhesive bandage removal should be advised after surgery, Crazy that it is not. The tape is a skin removing , painful, burn like injury. Good that you took Bailey in to vet for that! Poor girl, sounds like she is doing very well- better than anticipated!

Nothing in our kitchen matches. Makes the table more interesting , is my rational.I always give my best stuff away.

  20. Wonderful to have a friendly neighbor upstairs! The tree with the berries was stunning; our leaves are quickly falling due to rain and breezy weather. November is a bare month around here. Some people on our Ireland trip bought four differently etched wine glasses so that the drinkers could recognize their glass. It seemed like a great idea to me although I don't drink wine.

I do like mismatched wine glasses. When I see an interesting glass at the thrift store or estate sale, I buy it just to add to my collection.
