According to my phone, it's 30º F out there with a 70 percent chance of snow. We got snow yesterday, too -- not long after I got to work, some kids ran into the library full of excitement, saying, "It's snowing!" I looked outside and caught a glimpse but by the time I had an opportunity to walk to the window about half an hour later, it had turned to rain. Nothing was sticking.
The avocado is still covered and the canna lily is back in the shed!
Aside from the weather, I have nothing much to report. I tried to call the doctor's office to follow up on my capsule endoscopy and other tests from November, but I wasn't able to schedule anything.
I've just been reading about the California fires. As much as I love L.A., this is one thing that would make me hesitant to live there. In London we may have old, damp buildings, creeping black mold, air pollution, litter and other public nuisances, but at least we're not on fire. (And haven't been for a few hundred years.)
Olga is in hibernation mode. This is the blanket Dave's co-workers gave him while he was in the hospital and Olga has taken to it. Could it be a potential replacement for the shredded pink blanket? Stay tuned!

DeleteIf I were Olga, I’d immediately own that blanket. I had a hard time figure out where she was in that photo! What a charming photo up top. I’d want to be seated in that cafe (in warmth?) Earthquakes and fires were often on our minds when we lived in California.

DeleteI'm the same. I would be really hesitant to put in roots in southern California. Not only due to fires but also due to their financial/tax issues. I have read they have a $55 Billion with a B deficit this year!
ReplyDeleteAs I understand it, California has been severely hobbled by the citizen-led proposition many years ago that limited property taxes. I know the tax situation there isn't great anyway, but I suspect that's because the government has had to use other sorts of taxes to generate income, and it's always a struggle.

ReplyDeleteAs for cold weather, this morning it's 20 degrees with a wind chill of 16! That's REALLY cold for SC. My morning coffee tastes extra good, though. And George is currently curled up under one of his blankets, just like Olga. :)

ReplyDeleteEvery year S. CA gets the Santa Ana winds and every damned year they get the fires sparked by the high heat and high winds! And yet they stay, rebuild, and burn again! It's insane!
I had to adjust my eyes 👀 to figure out where Olga was in that blanket!
And as I understand it, the winds are particularly severe this year. I think if I lived in California I'd stick to a well-developed part of town, rather than building in an "edge" neighborhood near wilderness, but even that is no guarantee of safety, I suppose.

It's very plush and fuzzy but weirdly it's not super-warm. I think the underlying fabric is fairly thin. It's great for dogs with fur, though!
DeleteCold and overcast here today. Only supposed to get up to 42˚. Minnie is asleep on my lap under her blanket. Hibernation mode sounds about right. Not only for the dog.

DeleteIt is frigid in MA too. The high winds make it even colder. I walked with Caesar and 45 minutes was enough for both of us.

There must be some reason why they're reluctant to do that. As I understand it, there's been less rain than normal so the vegetation is unusually dry. Maybe in those conditions they don't want to do prescribed burns.

DeleteOlga is so comfy! I'm starting to doubt whether we'll get snow at all. I won't be broken hearted if we don't. I remember how distracted students would get at the smallest snow event. I dreaded it. The situation in California is tragic--so many signs of deadly climate change.

Yeah, my co-worker (who is from LA) said the Santa Anas are usually an autumn thing -- September and October. I'm not sure why they're blowing so strongly in January.
DeleteOlga looks so snug! Your creeping black mould would bother me a lot, I am allergic to moulds. So maybe I should never visit London if I ever win lotto?
