You Should Have Gone Up

Here's another photogenic rail station from my walk on New Year's Eve. The modern station is located across the street from this one, which doesn't appear to be in use. The four posters on the doors are part of a public art project. They say "the person behind wants to talk to you," "ideally this poster would show you the way," "this poster saw you coming before you looked at him" and "you should have gone up."

I spent yesterday morning gardening and cleaning. I say "gardening" but really all I did was cut some plants back. I did some reading about avocados, and found that the variety I think we have is more cold-hardy than I thought. It's not the West Indian type that I grew up with in Florida, which is quite tender. It's a Guatemalan species that can handle chilly weather, being native to high altitudes in Central America. It would still suffer in particularly cold weather or snow, but that explains why it came through our recent cold spell with nary a wilted leaf. (Except the ones I managed to damage while covering it!) So I guess I don't need to be as paranoid about protecting it as I have been, which is good news.

I cut the yellow rose in our garden and brought it inside to brighten up the kitchen.

In the afternoon I read "The Bee Sting." I've hit a rough patch in this book. The story is told in the voices of several characters, and the sections narrated by the mother are written with minimal punctuation. There are apostrophes and question marks, but nothing else -- most crucially no periods. It is a nightmare to read, and it's a 165-page section of the book. And we return to her later in the narrative, too.

I was annoyed at first because it seemed utterly purposeless, but then I read in online reviews that it's meant to show the mother's lack of formal education and her manic mindset. I still think it's gimmicky and it's giving me a headache. I am dying to get back to the sections voiced by the other characters.

Speaking of books, how do we feel about the demise of TikTok in the United States? I don't use TikTok at all so I don't really have a horse in this race, especially being here in the UK. But I do wonder about its effect on book sales and the publishing industry. The "Book Tok" community on TikTok has turned some books into best-sellers, and without that marketing tool I suspect some authors will suffer.

Here's an architecture/planning fail on our high street. That building on the right is brand new, and when it was built, it was left with a sloping sidewalk in front. The slope is quite dramatic and, as you can see, someone (presumably the local council?) chose to erect unsightly barriers rather than have people walking on it. I guess they don't want people tumbling sideways into Five Guys.

I wonder how they're ever going to fix this and how it was allowed to happen in the first place. It's unfortunate because it's a very busy stretch of pavement and having such a big section blocked off is inconvenient, to say the least.

  1. That blocked section of pavement must be VERY annoying. Someone somewhere clearly made a big mistake, one that is not impossible to rectify, but difficult (and probably responsibility for it is being shifted back and forth).
    The yellow rose is beautiful!
"The Bee Sting" doesn't sound like my kind of book. Maybe you'll get used to the mother's "voice" eventually.

    1. Yeah, you're probably right -- there's probably a lot of discussion behind the scenes about who's responsible for fixing that mistake.

  2. Maybe that section of pavement was blocked off when it was icy and dangerous. The surface blocks may be treacherous - even in rainy weather. Replacing them could be the answer. The hills of Sheffield mean that many of our pavements are 'sloped' but fortunately we do not have any "sidewalks" here.

    1. The barriers were there before winter, so I don't think they're related to ice, though of course ice wouldn't improve things.

  3. The blocked section of pavement is an inconvenient solution. I wonder what they’ll do. And I wonder if water flows in the doors when it rains. I once had to edit an interview of a writer who wrote stream of consciousness unpunctuated stories of his life. The interviewer thought it would be great to let the writer write his answers. I was then supposed to edit for clarity (which would have meant rewriting it). Sorry, but no matter how uneducated, most people punctuate their speech whether they know what it is or not.

    1. Yeah, I've been curious about what this area looks like in a heavy rain. Are those drains really enough to be effective?

  4. That sloping pavement is ridiculous and dangerous. Whoever is in charge of planning should have their knuckles severely rapped and a hefty fine!
    The rose, however, is beautiful.
I'm interested that you're growing avocado outside. We put ours out for its summer holiday, but brought it in once the weather started to be cooler. I should conduct a controlled experiment - we have innumerable avocado stones.

  5. The TikTok ban is a scam by Trump. Like all other things he does. Don't get me started on the meme coin. How are we even living in such a time that this grifter is becoming president, again, tomorrow? It is a very sad time.

    1. It is quite astonishing, isn't it? Yeah, that meme coin (like his RFTs) is such a grift.

  6. Pavement reactive by the look of it. Someone slipped, accused council or council quickly reacted, and closed off the path.

  7. I noticed more than one sidewalk than that in London -- and we have some here, too. And yes, how did it get that way in the first place. They're very awkward to walk on. I don't have a horse in the TikTok race either but I think people will figure out "another way" to get their word out -- they did before and will after -- if it really happens. What I don't get is if it IS sold to a US company, what changes besides ownership? As far as I can tell, the rules are pretty fast and loose (if there are any), so I'm not sure what the worry is about on the user's part. Now, if it shuts down, that's different. (You have a rose in winter from your garden? Sigh.)

    1. Well, we do have a lot of uneven or sloping sidewalks, but they're usually not quite like this one. They're more related to terrain. It sounds like this TikTok thing may blow over fairly quickly, as Trump has pledged to reinstate it.

  8. That sidewalk is what a man I used to know called a brother in law job. Someone got the work via connections rather than ability!

  9. Good news for the avocado, you certainly are a dedicated gardener.

I have found Paul Murray impossible to read and I tried. I am sure it's just me but there is always soo much dialogue, everybody is always talking, in a tragic/comedy way. So I haven't even attempted The Bee Sting, I gave up on Skippy Dies and decided there are too many books too little time etc. But I am following your continued verdict.

    1. I usually like dialogue, but not without punctuation! LOL! I haven't tried "Skippy Dies" yet, but we have it in the library. Maybe I'll try it if I like this one in the end.

  10. I cannot believe no one noticed the slope until now. Madness,

    1. Well, who knows WHEN they noticed it, but yeah, apparently not until after construction was finished. I suspect they thought it wouldn't be quite as steep as it is.

  11. It certainly does make you wonder how that sidewalk issue could have happened. I hope they come up with a way to fix it because those barriers are a bit unsightly.
Those arched entrances seem to be common theme on some of the older tube stations.
I love your yellow rose. Roses seem to like the cooler weather.

    1. Yeah, I have no idea what the fix will look like. I wonder why the new building is so far below street level?

      Delete
  12. I've never once looked at Tic Toc so it's no great loss to me. I imagine if the ban doesn't end someone will create something similar.

whatever possessed the person that built that building to leave the sidewalk like that. I see there's a drain along the middle so I suppose that's the purpose of the slant but really? Is the level portion lower than that at either end?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think the drains are there because of the slant, not the other way around, but who knows.

  13. I thought the same as Mitchell that during heavy rains the water would flow into the business doorway. There are so many ways to connect with people online that I think people will just find another way if they can't use TikTok. I don't use it.
Oh, remember how I would ask you for orchid advice? Well, my orchid died so I never did figure out what it needed. ;)

  14. I would probably never have given that sloping sidewalk a second glance except to think, Well that's weird. Huh.
What I would be thinking is, They have 5 Guys in London?
    Actually, I've never eaten there.
Good to know about the avocado. The ones that come up from my compost have survived the cold very well but I imagine that heat is generated in there.
    The rose. Yes.

    1. We get Five Guys occasionally. We are inundated with burger places in this neighborhood. I don't know how they all survive.

  15. I am not a tiktok user, so it doesn't matter to me. But, we know that China is a dedicated data collector and Chinese hacking operations (along with Russia) are huge business. We have to do something to protect ourselves. Yet people fuss about giving up temu and tiktok to try to sidestep that. Seems silly and self indulgent to me.

    1. We all have to assume our data is being harvested all the time. Whether it's by China or the USA or Google or Facebook, someone's collecting it.

    1. I haven't tried Bluesky yet, though I know it's all the rage. I can't face the prospect of rebuilding my entire social network. I don't love Facebook but I don't think it's any worse than any other big tech company. They're all shady.

I read a book once that was written backwards, starting at the end, and working it's way forward. Not a huge fan, but that writer liked to do things like that.
The US government wants Tiktok to be sold, I'm wondering to whom, and how would Americans feel if the Chinese government told them that Facebook had to be sold. Apparently it's the algorithm which is so valuable. I don't use it myself.

    1. A backwards book sounds exhausting. It's one thing to be innovative, but it's another to be gimmicky.

  21. Congress passed the Tik Tok ban. SCOTUS upheld it. The excuse was that China was getting people's data from the users. It's all bullshit. Biden did the ban, now 47 will reverse the ban, that he originally wanted, to make Biden the goat. Apparently 47 discovered has has a massive following on Tik Tok. So much for security.

    1. aaaannnd... Biden said he would not enforce the ban. This is all a bunch of hooey.

    2. But TikTok apparently DID go dark. Trump says he'll reverse it but how can he do that if Congress passed it? As a veto?

  22. I see we've polluted London's restaurant scene with another American export....... As far as Tik Tok goes, Trump is going to accept a bribe from the owner of Tik Tok for undoing the ban, because that's what he does.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, we have tons of American exports here. There's a Chipotle right down the street! If Trump's not accepting an outright bribe, he's eager to benefit from TikTok exposure on social media -- which is a kind of bribe, I suppose.

  23. I think I mentioned that a friend/librarian/book blogger couldn't make it through that book; you've probably hit on why. It's rare that Anne doesn't finish a book once she's started. I don't do Tik Tok but the whole situation with Trump wanting to get rid of it and then making himself the "hero" makes me sick.

  24. When we built our bookstore back in 1996 it was in a brand new strip mall. Unfortunately the only street entrance to the mall had a huge dip getting back out onto the street. Cars going too fast (just over a crawl) would scrape their bottoms. We complained to our landlords but they said it was required by the city. That's one of the things I DON'T miss about our long dead bookstore dream.

    1. Local regulations can be a complicating factor in construction, for sure, but I can't see how this fiasco is the result of local regs. In fact, I suspect it's in contravention of local regs!

  25. You do wonder how the sloping sidewalk construction came to be? Somebody got a free pass and now a rebuild is required at more cost.
As a non-user, I also have no stake in the TikToc battles. That said, China's data gathering interests are real. Also, US copyright and patent laws are not upheld by China. China has a talent for taking a US product/invention and re-engineering it cheaper and faster.

    1. I don't think anyone on the Internet respects copyright laws! I do believe TikTok is a data gathering machine, but so is all social media.

  26. I've never looked at TikTok. I'm annoyed when someone tells me they learned some news from a TikTok video because it's always some crap that's not true. Anyway, it will probably be back. He who must not be named has said he will not enforce the ban. Never mind the Supreme Court.

  28. I can't stand and skip over many Facebook posts written in all caps and with no punctuation. I would probably stop reading any book if I can across a page, much less 100+ pages written that way, regardless of the topic.

I can understand the government banning Tic Tok among employees, especially those working in sensitive areas. An outright ban of Tic Tok worries me, not because I use or like Tic Tok (I've never seen it other than clips on the evening news) but because of the precedent it sets. We are essentially allowing our government to determine what is and what isn't beneficial to us as a whole and sets us up on a slippery slope leading to oppressive countries like Russia or China that do those sorts of things in an out of control manner. What will they decide to ban next for "our good/safety"?
