Hagar's Head Lice
I got an extra hour of sleep out of the dog this morning! She woke up at 5 a.m. as usual but when she began giving me the paw, I just rolled over and darned if she didn't settle down and let me sleep until 6. I consider that a major victory.
The snowdrops have come up in our garden -- they're not quite open yet but they're already looking good. The daffodils, despite an early start, have slowed and we don't seem to have any that are near blooming. I think the recent cold weather has chilled their enthusiasm. We've had daffodils in January before, but not this year.
Speaking of gardening, the saga of our front garden continues. You may remember that our upstairs neighbors, the Russians, cooked up a plan to rip out some of the bushes. I opposed this plan and said so in an e-mail to our landlords, and they sided with me. (The Russians and our landlords jointly own the house where Dave and I rent the bottom flat, and under the terms of our lease they are jointly responsible for the front garden.) Well, Mrs. Russia wrote me yesterday complaining that her wishes have been "disregarded and misrepresented" and she pushed again for ripping out those bushes. She expressly asked that I not forward her message to our landlords. I don't know why she insists on coming to me with these issues because, to use George W. Bush's word, I AM NOT THE DECIDER. I told her to write the landlords.
Meanwhile, it looks like our garden won't be trimmed anytime soon. Pruning gridlock!
Honestly, is it any wonder the world is such a mess? We can't even get simple landscape maintenance done without instigating another Cold War.
I found this Viking hat (complete with braids!) on the ground on my walk home from work last night. Have we been invaded again?
Seeing that fake hair reminds me that we got a note the other day about cases of head lice being reported in the school. Fortunately this is not a problem I have to think about, having very minimal hair myself. I remember when I was a kid we would have lice checks in elementary school -- the nurses would come to our classrooms and go up and down the rows of students examining our heads. As I recall they used a pencil to look through our hair, and it felt great. If they found lice the kid got sent home right away, which must have been embarrassing. Do you think they used the same pencil to look through all of our hair? That seems problematic, doesn't it?
I was aghast at Trump's press conference following the Washington, D.C. plane crash. I don't think I've ever seen such a bizarre performance from a sitting president. My jaw was literally hanging open. To immediately use such a tragedy to make a political point about DEI programs, insulting all the pilots and air traffic controllers involved by implying they were unsuited for their jobs, basically blaming every minority group in the country for the crash, and providing no evidence to support any of those claims -- it was astonishing. The fact that the helicopter pilot has subsequently been shown to be a woman doesn't change any of that, because who knows who was doing what at the time? There's been no completed investigation. I cannot believe this man is the leader of the free world.
Also, why are Army helicopters flying so near the flight path of a major commercial airport? Is that part of the training? Are we now using innocent civilians as military training fodder without their consent?
Is it just me, or does Trump look terrible? Like, even worse than usual. He looks like a ghost with an Oompa-Loompa spray tan.

Memories of the school nit nurse visits.
ReplyDeleteNow my head is itching.
The power of suggestion!
DeleteHe does look EXACTLY like you've described. The white around his eyes --
ReplyDeleteYes! And the eyebrows. Very weird.
DeleteThe Orange Head Louse is not the leader of the free world. He's the leader of suspicion, accusation, condemnation, lies, anger, pet theories, greed and egotism. Twelve days into his second term, he also appears increasingly demented.
ReplyDeleteAll of that is true, but sadly, he IS also the leader of the free world. At least if you subscribe to the idea that the USA is the free world's superpower. (Not surprisingly this is often the American view.)
DeleteThe word nits always makes me start scratching. I love your description of Trump, he has started at a new low.
ReplyDeleteHow low can he go? We still don't know. (Yes, that's a poem.)
DeleteMy brother used to work by Reagan airport; he said it is pretty common to have all the helicopters flying by the planes. I will never get over, when someone asked Trump if he was going to visit the crash site, he said, why, to go swimming? He is deplorable in every way. Each day it is something else, from all the firings to scrubbing federal web sites of information. It's horrifying. I don't know the answer of what to do.
ReplyDeleteHe really IS deplorable in every way. I know that is very busy airspace but it seems to me they need to rethink the proximity of planes to helicopters. Probably will now.
DeleteI agree, Trump does look terrible, even for Trump (just like an Oompa-Loompa). His behavior, however, is exactly as expected. I don’t remember ever hearing about lice when I was in school. It became very common years later. So glad you’re bald! I hope Dave is watching out for the buggers. Mrs. Russia would drive me crazy. Your landlords sound very reasonable. The joys of sharing a property.
ReplyDeleteAs appalling as I know Trump to be, I would not have expected this press conference.
DeleteEvery day he looks worse and worse and sounds worse and worse. That press conference couldn't have been more insulting to anyone. You probably heard him talk about not visiting the crash site in such a disparaging way -- to go swimming? (Oops -- I just read back over all the comments and Elle brought that up, too.) The newest memo is curtailing any federal honoring of special group months (Black History, Holocaust month, Hispanic Month, etc.)
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the garden. The snowdrops are wonderful. I need to remember to buy snowdrop bulbs this year!
Snowdrops are always so nice to see at a time when very little else is blooming.
DeleteI don't think he'll last four years, and after that press conference, and his vile behavior, I don't care.
ReplyDeleteApparently, he was asked if he would go to the crash site and he said to a reporter, "To do what? Get in the water? You want me to go swimming?"
Pig.
You may be right. He looks infirm.
DeleteI think the whole rental situation is emblematic of our political situation here. Two parties with two different ideas and no motivation for compromise.
ReplyDeleteI for one was not shocked or astonished by Trumps accusations at the press conference. I find him very predictable. That is very sad that I have become numb to his lies and fear mongering but it is the truth. What would surprise me more is if both political parties stop fear mongering the public at some point in our political future or the public waking up and stop being sheep and believing everything "my side" tells me to be afraid over.
I've offered to compromise in several ways, but the thing is, they're not my bushes. It's up to her and the landlord to reach an agreement.
DeleteA ghost would be preferable! He is a cruel, inhumane bastard!
ReplyDeleteHe is so fixated on himself that he has no compassion. In fact, he would sneer at compassion as weakness.
DeleteApparently those helicopters are all over the flight path all the time, ferrying politicos and VIPs. The black hawk was more than a half mile off its proposed flight plan, and flying much higher than it should have been, and I can't for the life of me figure out the swerve into the plane at the last minute. I have been reading stories about the young figure skaters and their families who were lost, the newly minted law professor, all the light and promise, snuffed out in an instant. I confess it comforts me when I learn that a whole family was together on the flight. At least none of them will need to live on with the heartbreak.
ReplyDeleteBtw, I have made my blog private so if you want to keep visiting there, please send me your email so I can invite you. It will no longer update on your blog roll now that it is private, even if I have recently posted. I hope you'll keep coming around.
I know, it's terrible about that family, but I thought the same thing -- at least they were together.
DeleteI'm trying to focus on the pretty snowdrops and the daffodils we have to look forward to. But then, my happy thoughts turned dark with the mention of that hateful man. I want to hear more stories of people that are resisting and what is being done to stop him. Please research and share that info, Steve. Please help.
ReplyDeleteI blog daily, and give all my current resistance and protest and info actions.
DeleteThanks, Boud! I will check out your blog.
DeleteI do try to be positive, for the most part, but I just couldn't overlook how shocked I was by that display.
DeleteI don't remember ever being checked for lice in school. And I don't remember there being any outbreaks. This, of course, does not mean that they didn't happen - I have a terrible memory. And I'm using my terrible memory to try to forget that Trump is president. It's not working very well.
ReplyDeleteYou and I are close to the same age, so I'd be surprised if you didn't have lice checks. I think they were pretty standard by the time we were in school.
DeleteHead lice? Absolutely rampant with aboriginal kids in the arctic when I was there. I came home with one on my shirt one day!
ReplyDeleteYikes! I never got lice, fortunately. Even when I had hair they stayed away from me!
DeleteIt is coming out that there was only one air traffic controller on duty, the other having supervisor permission to leave early. What I most miss is that we used to have leaders who waited for the facts before addressing the public. No more. No we have a pretender who twists every disaster to prove his own views or to further his own agenda. Pete Buttigieg gave a very excellent rebuttal. I hope you saw it.
ReplyDeleteI did see Pete's rebuttal and it was brilliant. That's the man who should be president. Trump could easily have expressed condolences and promised a thorough investigation and that's all he needed to say -- it's what any other president would have said.
DeleteOh, how I remember the horror of lice infestations in my kids' schools. And how if your child got them (mine did), the whole process of shampooing with the poison shampoo, the going through of each strand of hair with the tiny lice comb, the washing of every single thing made of fabric in the house that could fit into the washer...
ReplyDeleteThere were times when I just wanted to shave my kids' heads bald and then burn the house down. And of course i got them too.
Not only does Trump look awful, it seems like he's reading his notes with even less ability to follow them.
I remember reading all those advisories about what to do to fight lice. Exhausting! And now they're apparently immune to those shampoos.
DeleteAnd his response when asked if he was going to visit the crash site. The man has never had any sort of empathy but at least he could halfway fake it. No longer. He is deteriorating rapidly. How can anyone watch him and think this country is in good hands.
ReplyDeleteThere was a bad lice infestation at my grandkids elementary school. My daughter had so much trouble getting rid of it on Jade that they finally had to shave a portion of her hair.
I guess Ms Russia thinks if she can get you on her side she can get what she wants.
I think he is deteriorating. I think you're right.
DeleteI remember about head lice. I had masses of curly hair, too. I don't remember picking them up, but kids who did had some special liquid in their hair instantly, and I think they had to go home.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they did. God knows what that liquid was!
DeleteHe does look worse from what I've seen. I can't stand to look at him so I usually turn away from the TV when he's moaning. When I heard about the plane crash the evening it happened, I remember thinking at the time how awful it was and next thinking 'I wonder how Trump will blame this on the democrats'. It certainly didn't take long for me to find out. His comments were/are despicable.
ReplyDeleteI didn't expect him to cast blame so quickly, and with so little evidence or knowledge. Most people have the good sense to wait a respectable period of time.
DeleteI, too, have made the comparison between 47 and the oompah-loompahs. What is up with the eyebrows. The most terrifying thing for me at present is the fact the Musk's people have taken control of government data bases and locked the federal employees out. This is borderline bloodless coup.
ReplyDeleteYes! The eyebrows! His eyes and eyebrows look terrible. I am also terrified of Musk and his influence. This is what happens when all the resources flow to a handful of billionaires. We have an oligarchy.
DeleteI had very long hair so nits were a nightmare for me and for my mother, who had to comb through to tease the little buggers out.
ReplyDeleteThe orange one is despicable and getting worse. Has he no compassion?
I think if I had long hair and got lice I'd just shave it. Or at least cut it very close. I realize that's harder for girls and probably was even more difficult years ago when long hair was pretty much expected.
DeleteI have flown that approach the American Air lines jet flew many times in my corporate pilot days. That is some of the busiest airspace in the US. when on approach you are sequenced about 1-2 minutes apart, At night it is hard to see lights of other airplanes because of the city lights. And yes, there is a system of low level routes over the Potomac River for rotor wing aircraft, but they must remain below 200 ft at the point of the collision. The radar data shows that the helicopter did exceed 200 ft just prior to the impact. In fact that same radar data shows both aircraft at 400 ft at impact. We have data, but we DON'T know what happened yet, that's for the NTSB to determine, not Trump to blame it on Obama, Biden, or DEI. BTW, the senior instructor pilot on that helicopter was a 39 yr old male Army officer, so much for that DEI garbage. Trump's behavior at that press conference was horrible. I see that Ms Russia is resuming the Cold War.....
ReplyDeleteYes! Exactly. DEI can't be blamed when two of the three crew members were white males who presumably should have been helping the pilot stay on track and at the proper altitude. For all we know one of them could have been flying. Who knows?
DeleteNot mine. Vikinghelmets do not have horns.
ReplyDeleteDon't they?! They do in cartoons! :)
DeleteIt is heartbreaking and tragic to see innocent people die in a horrific plane-helicopter crash. To make matters worse, DT placing blame without facts and justification is shocking.
ReplyDeleteYour neighbors seem obsessed with the property and their ongoing desire to make changes is tiring.
The snowdrops in your garden are lovely. Mine are still under ice and snow.
We seldom get ice and snow here, so this is about the time the snowdrops appear.
DeleteAll my kids had to do was come home from school and tell me they'd been checked for head lice for my head to start itching. I always lectured them about not sharing hairbrushes or hats! I had them so paranoid they couldn't sit in a cloth seat anywhere (like the movie theater) without using something as a barrier!
ReplyDeleteMovie theater seats ARE kind of disgusting when you think about it.
DeleteI don't think "they" care about how bizarre Trump's behavior is, or how long he lasts. Project 2050 and the likes of Thiel and Musk bought JD Vance a senate ticket and then a future presidency.
ReplyDeletecorrection - Project 2025
DeleteI think Trump's cult of followers actually revel in his bad behavior. They're sick to death of being told to be polite and respectful of others and now they just want to bust things up.
DeleteI am no fan of Vance, God knows, but I think he has better sense and better intelligence than Trump. I don't agree with him but given a choice I'd rather have him as president any day.
There are no words adequate to express the fuckery that is going on in the US.
ReplyDeleteExcept "fuckery." That's a good word. :)
DeleteI couldn't watch more than the first few minutes of it.
ReplyDeleteIt was so shocking I couldn't turn away!
DeleteI was terrified that my girls would bring home head lice but I got lucky. Hopefully their sons won't either! Although outraged by Trump, I'm not surprised; the so-called fear mongering of the Dems has come completely true and is even worse than predicted. Remember Project 2025, the one that we were warning about??
ReplyDeleteYeah, all that 2025 stuff is on its way, for sure. Still, I was surprised by Trump's appalling press conference. The guy is literally the worst.
DeleteI saw a little of that trump interview and was disgusted when he said "I have common sense" because he clearly doesn't and I turned it off. the man is a loony! And does he suddenly have very bushy eyebrows or was his tan mask too high on his forehead?
ReplyDeleteI don't remember classroom checks for head lice, though I do remember some kids being absent because they had them. I never ever had them and sometimes wonder if the amount of time I spent in salt water at the beach had anything to do with that.
Loony is a good word! I don't know what was up with those eyebrows. And yeah, I wonder if salt water keeps lice down? Seems like it might.
DeleteI'm getting caught up on Blog Reads, I got so far behind. I remember the School Head Lice Outbreaks, I Raised Two Generations of Kiddos and some Years it was worse than others. My Granddaughter liked her long Hair so I'd have it braided into Cornrows to help prevent Lice from hopping aboard, don't know if there's evidence to support it does, but, that Year she was Lice Free and Color me Happy since I have Dreadlocks so didn't wanna risk an infestation at Home. *Whew* It always made me itch just to hear the Words Head Lice. *Smiles* That Air Disaster was very Strange due to one being a Military Maneuver and so close to where Civilian Aircraft were using the Air Space too. We are Retired Military, so was my Dad, and most Bases have their own Air Space for all maneuvers, most of their Jets fly so much faster they have to in order not to put Civilians in peril. The Blackhawks have sometimes used Civilian Airports nearby tho', so, it will be interesting to hear what the investigation reveals? He was as irresponsible as ever at making false and incendiary claims and doubling down on them even when called out. I heard a Reporter did call him out right away about there being no proof of those claims and allegedly he chalked his loose canon comments up to 'common sense' of which he has none. He looks terrible and hopefully that's a good sign that he's not gonna last all four years. His deterioration physically and mentally is rapid and has been showing since 2016. The cognitive decline and mental health decline alone should have made him ineligible to run again... but, here we now are.
